CNN vs. Fox News I decided to focus on the CNN and Fox News networks for this assignment; in order to gain an understanding on the differences between how each network shares information with the public. From my own perspective, I have always viewed CNN as a more reliable source than Fox News, and as I analyzed both networks I find this assumption to be truer than I thought. I found that both networks share several of the same world news events, but each network has a different priority. However, of the several stories shared, one news report caught my attention most; the ISIS video threats to France, Italy, and the U.S. After watching both CNN and Fox News, it was evident to me that CNN broadcasted their findings in a very conscious manner, keeping the audiences best interest at mind. However, it isn’t just the fact that CNN touches upon several aspects concerning ISIS that gives me the impression that they are a more reliable source; but the depth that they get into in just thirty minutes. In the particular news broadcast covering the ISIS video that I saw, CNN gave detailed advice on how American tourists should stay safe, potential targets that ISIS may hit, and the protective security measures that the government is taking along with the FBI. They include insight on how several authorities are taking action by attending briefings and reporting back, as well as further investigation on how suicide bombs were built. When watching the one hour segment that Fox News had concerning ISIS, it became evident that this network is all about whatever is more profitable for them. From the particular news segment that I saw, Fox News did share some of the same information as CNN, but in the briefest manner. Instead of giving the audience insight on what actions are being taken to protect us, they get into what I think of as a talk show. For example, a retired military analyst was interviewed and asked to give his insight on ISIS and what should be done to contain them. Within this hour, there were several others interviewed as well with “experts” going back and forth on the topic. It looked like pure entertainment. Furthermore, I decided to look up information on both networks independently and found some interesting facts. In 2013, Fox News was found to have 55% of their broadcasts based on opinions, while 45% was based on factual reporting. While, CNN was found to have 46% of their broadcasts listed as opinion based, and 54% based on factual reporting. Although the percentages are not too far apart, it is evident that CNN is considered a more reliable source than Fox. Regardless of which source is more reliable, I enjoyed looking into these networks more critically and gaining insight on how news is shared with the public.

Israel-Palestine Media Coverage

...Conflict Haaretz vs. Al Jazeera vs. Fox and CNN Palestinian President, Mahmoud Abbas, recently won the United Nations’ General Assembly vote of Palestine being recognized as an observer state and now they are officially considered the “State of Palestine” by popular vote. Israel and the United States, however, did not recognize Palestine’s upgrade within the UN. This issue is very important to understand the United States’ role in today’s Israel-Palestine relations. The United States’ most watched news channels, Fox and CNN, have a very one-sided view on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict—generally one that favors Israel. Al Jazeera, the most popular Arab news channel, seems objective for the most part, but occasionally Palestinian favoritism can be seen. Haaretz newspaper, the most read Israeli newspaper in English, seems to be neutral, but also anti-Hamas on this debate; however, it does acknowledge good aspects of the Palestinian side. All of this is apparent through the wording used in the articles, the various sources of each news channel’s information, and the amount of opinions versus fact based information included in each article. The United States is a proud supporter of Israel and has been ever since Israel declared statehood. As seen in history, Israel has had full U.S. support not only militarily, but through the media also. The CNN and Fox articles are both about how the Palestine is treated, or should be treated by the United States. The Fox article discusses...

...CNN vs. Fox News ENG/220 March 3, 2014 CNN vs Foxnews There are a number of news outlets currently available online, but no two are as big as CNN.com and Foxnews.com. These two media giants control most of the coverage on news stories circulating the globe. Although, nothing is covered as heavily as the presidential election in the United States. The two websites, and their affiliated television channels have hosted multiple debates and both have nearly twenty four seven coverage of the current national election. For most individuals, this would be the end of the two media giant’s similarities as they are considered to be very different ideologically. One author states, “In their coverage of the invasion of Iraq, CNN and FNC broadcast two distinct ideological news cultures.” (Silcock 2008). The writings to follow, will take you on a journey of the key differences and similarities of these two successful companies. Similarities CNN.com has long been regarded as a more liberal sources than its counterpart Foxnews.com, this may be true in some instances, but certainly not all. While most people would disagree with that statement, it is relatively closer to the truth than thinking that CNN is a very liberal source. In most instances online, the two sources have very similar headlines, and their stories are much closer to being aligned than one would expect. For example, on CNN.com the main headline is “Trump is a fraud,” whereas on Foxnews.com it is “Trump, Romney feud erupts...

Social Justice

...S.-Iraqi Government has continued. In the same timeframe in America, we have witnessed two Presidential elections and an increasing tendency of major media outlets to offer commentary and analysis—from a partisan viewpoint. The effect has been toxic: today the mainstream media has fractionated itself into insular cliques which often sacrifice big-picture reporting for attention grabbing headlines. Prior to the Wikileaks release this month, which placed the death toll among Iraqi civilians in the past six years at 66,000, the number killed was unclear and largely outside of American public knowledge. A detailed series of Internet searches for news articles mentioning “Iraqi civilian deaths,” “Iraq civilian blast,” and other permutations of the above published in the last four years show no shortage of reporting from many news outlets.2,3 Each invariably includes a quote from an American official lamenting the deaths and remarking that dead civilians undermine...

Negotiating in Emerging Markets

...Summary Technology has provided companies the opportunity to expand into areas of the world that were nearly inaccessible several decades ago. These markets have seen an increase in goods sold to them, more of their natural resources being purchased from them, and more employment opportunities at multi-national firms. These emerging markets are usually categorized as countries with low–to-middle per capita income and often considered the world’s fastest growing economies. Countries in Asia, Latin America, Africa and Eastern Europe are seeing a growth in local business activities as well as international business activities, both of which are stemming from multinational firms primarly located in North America or Europe. Understanding the best ways to work with individuals from these emerging markets can be valuable during negotiations. There are five cultural factors that most often affect negotiations among cultures: 1. use of time; 2. individualism versus collectivism; 3. role orderliness and conformity 4. patterns of communication; (Acuff, 2008) and 5. corruption. The goal of this research paper is to discuss cultural factors that affect negotiation and find examples from different regions on how those factors affected business negotiations and to conclude by providing ideas to deal with those challenges faced during negotiations. Use of time Individuals in different countries perceive time and use time in different ways. There are two major ways that cultures understand...

All Lives Matter: George Zimmerman

...racial profiling at the 2016 ESPY awards. The movement had gained so much attention that it was even a part of the United States Presidential Election. President Donald Trump opposed the group saying that it was promoting racism, instigating violence, and disrespecting law enforcement (Black 2). There are many groups against the movement. Along with many reasons to be against the movement. The group “Blue Lives Matter” sees “Black Lives Matter” as a misleading, racist, anti-police group. Blue Lives Matter is a movement advocating that those who are convicted of killing law enforcement officers should be sentenced under hate crime statutes (Black 2). The group is also said to be prejudice towards white people. Brian Kilmeade, the host of Fox and Friends, explained the group BLM to be a hate group (Goldberg 1). The phrase “All Lives Matter” would be better to use in this situation. It shows no racial profiling and promotes equality. The meaning of equality state of being equal, especially in status, rights, and opportunities. No ones better than the other and everyone's the same. Presidential candidate Ben Carson complained that the group was confused on the wrong target. Presidential candidate Rand Paul also said, “I think they should change their name to some easier to relate to like maybe if they were “All Lives Matter or Innocent Lives Matter” (Marino 1) The phrase “ All Lives Matter” is reasonable since it explains that every single life is equal (Black 2). Flexible Scheduling Good or Bad for Employees

...DCS5138 Management Information Systems CASE STUDY 1 Flexible Scheduling Good or Bad for Employees? With nearly 1.4 million workers domestically, Wal-Mart is the largest private employer in the United States, Wal-Mart is also the nation’s number one retailer in terms of sales, registering nearly $379 billion in sales revenue for the fiscal year ending January 31, 2008. Wal-Mart achieved its lofty status through a combination of low prices and low operational costs, enabled by superb continuous inventory replenishment system. Now Wal-Mart is trying to lower costs further by changing its methods for scheduling the work shifts of its employees. In early 2007, Wal-Mart revealed that is was adopting a computerized scheduling system, a move that has been roundly criticized by workers’ rights advocates for the impact it may have on employees’ lives. Traditionally, scheduling employee shifts at big box stores such as Wal-Mart was the domain of store managers who arranged schedules manually. They based their decisions in part on current store promotions as well as on weekly sales data from the previous year. Typically, the process required a full day of effort for a store manager. Multiply that labor intensity by the number of stores in a chain and you have an expensive task with results that are marginally beneficial to the company. By using a computerized scheduling system, such as the system from Kronos that Wal-Mart adopted, a retail...

Richard Sherman & the American Dream

...Richard Sherman: The Rejected Embodiment of the American Dream If I work hard enough, I can do anything. If I put my mind to it, I can make all the money in the world. If I give it my all, I can get everything that I want and more. This rhetoric is what our great country is built upon: The American Dream. No matter who you are and where you come from, with determination and persistence, you can fulfill your wildest dreams. This concept represents several key American values: racial equality, capitalism, and an emphasis on merit over social status. Although the American community preaches equality for all, its racially-fueled disapproval of Richard Sherman’s “outburst” is a microcosm of Americans’ selective application of the American Dream, the tendency to view those who come from underprivileged neighborhoods as inherently and genetically unequipped with the cognitive tools required for academic and professional success. On January 19th, 2014, the day of the NFL NFC Championshp, the stakes could not have been greater; Richard Sherman was just thirty seconds away from his first Super Bowl. Sherman’s Seattle Seahawks led the San Francisco 49ers 23-17, leaving the 49ers with a final opportunity to win the game. The 49ers ran a play for Michael Crabtree, whom Sherman was guarding, who was making his way into the end zone. Sherman, the NFL’s best cornerback, leaped with Crabtree and tipped the pass towards a teammate in a historic play that ended the 49ers season and, in turn...

Will Tv Succumb to the Internet? Case Study

...What’s the Buzz on Smart Grids? CASE STUDY What’s the Buzz on Smart Grids? CASE STUDY T T he existing electricity infrastructure in the United States is outdated and inefficient. Energy companies provide power to consumers, but the grid provides no information about how the consumers are using that energy, making it difficult to develop more efficient approaches to distribution. Also, the current electric- ity grid offers few ways to handle power provided by alternative energy sources, which are critical compo- nents of most efforts to go “green.” Enter the smart grid. A smart grid delivers electricity from suppliers to consumers using digital technology to save energy, reduce costs, and increase reliability and trans- parency. The smart grid enables information to flow back and forth between electric power providers and individual households to allow both consumers and energy companies to make more intelligent decisions regarding energy consumption and production. Information from smart grids would show utilities when to raise prices when demand is high and lower them when demand lessens. Smart grids would also help consumers program high-use electrical appliances like heating and air condition- ing systems to reduce consumption during times of peak usage. If implemented nationwide, proponents believe, smart grids would lead to a 5 to 15 percent decrease in energy consumption. Electricity grids are sized to meet the maximum electricity need, so a drop in peak demand...

Victoria Secret

...The Silky Strategy of Victoria’s Secret Chelsea Chi Chang Alice Lin Charlene Mak BEM 106: Strategy Professor McAfee 28 May 2004 1 Victoria's Secret is a retail brand of lingerie and beauty products, owned and run by the Limited Brands company. Victoria’s Secret generates more than $4 billion in sales a year. It is the fastest growing subsidiary of Limited Brands and contributes 42% of corporate profits. More than 1000 Victoria's Secret retail stores are open in the United States. Products are also available through the catalogue and online business, Victoria's Secret Direct, with sales of approximately $870 million. Victoria’s Secret was established by Roy Raymond in the San Francisco area during the 1970s. Raymond saw an opportunity in taking “underwear” of the time and turning it into fashion. Products stood apart from the traditional white cotton pieces, which department stores offered, with colors, patterns and style that gave them more allure and sexiness. They combined European elegance and luxury. Even the name Victoria’s Secret was meant to conjure up images of 19th-century England. The store went so far as to list a fake London address for the company headquarters. Like Starbucks, Victoria’s Secret markets self-indulgence at an affordable price. By 1982, Raymond had opened six stores and launched a modest catalog operation. He then sold Victoria’s Secret to Limited Brands, which took Victoria’s and sprinted away. Today, Victoria’s Secret enjoys nearly a monopoly...

Group Four Midterm Project

...of this analysis is to focus on British Petroleum (BP) leadership as it relates to the 2010 Gulf oil spill and cleanup. One would think that a large corporation like BP would be penalized greatly from an oil spill of the magnitude. Once the announcement was made of the spill, BP leadership was quick to shirk responsibility and circumvent its safety policies and practices which led to one of the greatest man-made ecological disasters the world has ever known. Prior to the spill, the leadership values and culture at BP are obvious. Their focus was on reducing costs and meeting tight time-lines at the expense of safety. The former BP CEO resigned voluntarily. What leadership values or traits changed as a result of the disaster at BP? Did the new CEO set forth a path of leadership change or rather simply pacify the media? The Gulf oil spill forced a rapid increase in fuel prices in the country. In one quarter during 2010, BP earned enough profit to cover the expenses associated with the spill, including the associated litigation. One astonishing fact is that, upon exiting, the (supposedly) punished CEO was given a settlement of over 100 million dollars from BP. What leadership changes have occurred as a result of this tragedy? Not much, why? Limited financial consequences for BP have brought about very little change in leadership traits, leadership values, and ultimately leadership behavior. This has continued at a time when the oil industry’s lobbying has resulted in continued U...
