1. Discuss the importance of studying human communication- Studying human communication is important because every human needs to be able to explain their needs/wants and be understood by the receiving individual so that there is mutual understanding. This goes for both verbal and non-verbal communication. One may learn how to speak Thai, travel to Thailand, and still find difficulty in communicating due to nonverbal gestures that may mean one thing in our society but doesn’t mean the same thing in a different culture. 2. Define communication- The imparting or interchange of thoughts, opinions, or information by speech, writing, or signs. (http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/communication?s=t) 3. Name and explain the seven primary components of communication- a. Message Creation- The process of taking an idea and converting it into a message. b. Meaning Creation- The goal of exchanging symbols to create meaning. c. Setting- The physical surroundings of a communication event. d. Participants- Two or more people who interact. e. Channels- The means through which a message is conveyed. f. Noise- Any stimulus that can interfere with, or degrade, the quality of a message. g. Feedback- The response to a message. 4. Explain the Synergetic Model of Communication- The Synergetic Model presents communication as a transactional process in which meaning is influenced by cultural, societal, and individual forces. 5. Understand the ethical responsibilities of speakers and listeners- Speakers and listeners should make and maintain eye contact while engaging in conversation. Speakers must convey their message in a way such that the listener can understand. Listeners should receive messages and be able to understand and, if necessary, be able to regurgitate what they heard to the speaker or other individuals.
