Worldwide, most students attend either single-sex schools or co-ed schools. Is there a difference? It is important to explore the advantages and disadvantages of both systems.
The formative years of children are the best time to expose them to the company of the other gender, in order that they may learn each others’ behaviour and be better prepared for adult life. Co-ed school provides a superb environment and opportunity for both sexes to mix, for example, boys and girls get to learn together in key learning area from maths to food tech. As a result, male students (or vice versa), girls may become more confident and comfortable in dealing with the opposite sex without being shy or embarrassed. In fact boys and girls are a good influence on each other, engendering good behaviour and maturity – particularly as teenage girls usually exhibit greater responsibility than boys of the same age. Academic competition between the sexes is a spur to better performance at school. Co-ed school mimics or mirrors the 'real' world where both sexes mix, for example, whether you are working in a store or in an corporate office, you are in an assorted place of mixed sexes. If there is no segregation, then why have it at school?Co-ed schools promote the need to get along with each other which can avoid sexism and discrimination in the future. It teaches students that they are equal, have the same right and the opportunity to reach their potential. Also, co-ed schools allow great opportunities for boys and girls to learn about relationship on a day to day basis.
As opposed
Single sex schools unlike coed schools are more supportive academically, the competition between sexes is lowered , and students discover their character and develop their intellect. In a single-sex environment students feel more free to take chances with their ideas and most importantly disregard the label that

Co-Education

...CO-EDUCATION “CO-EDUCATION AND PEOPLE PERCEPTION AND NEED OF STUDENT’S COUNSELING” ABSTRACT: Education is the fundamental right of every individual. Today, those societies have excelled in every field of life where man and woman are provided equal opportunities for education. It is common believed that for the development of adolescents, segregated schooling system is better than co-education. While co-education plays an important in the development of both male and female. By studying in the same institution together, male and female acquire maturity through interaction and sharing of personal experiences at an early age than in separate institution. But there is a somewhat persistent belief amongst many parents that single-sex is best, especially for girls. Secondary school students do not know how to control their feelings and emotions and how to release their tension. They, at this stage, usually feel attraction in opposite gender, act highly emotional in different matters and no proper guidance is provided to them. Counseling is a wonderful modern invention. The term ‘school counselling’ broadly refers to the process of meeting the needs of students in several areas , such as academics, society, career, and personal. The purpose of the study is to change the people perceptions about coeducation and to develop a knowledge about behavior changes and need of counseling in students. This is a deductive kind of research as it is designed to test the hypothesis and getting...

Co-Education

...Essay Introduction: Co-Education means the education of boys and girls together in the same institution and at the same time. In India, it has recently become common. In the recent past religious leaders and the people of conservative views did not favor the idea. They were even against the education of women, because they were not in favor of liberty and equality to be granted to women. But now times have changed. Co-education in India: Co-education is not a new thing for us. In the good old days when Sanskrit used to be the mother tongue in India and the Ashram were the seats of learning, co-education was widely practiced. In the Hindu scriptures, old records and legends, we find a number of examples which show that co-education was prevalent then. The practice continued till the advent of Muslim rule in India. With the Muslim rule came the degradation of women. The ‘Purdha’ system led to the discouragement of female education. Co-education in the West: In Europe Co-education is only of recent origin. Oxford and Cambridge universities kept their door tightly shut against woman till recently. But after the First World War, Co-education had tremendous rise in Europe and America. In America women have now begun to outnumber man in the school and colleges. Criticism in Favor and Against Co-education: For the very beginning powerful voices have been raised against this speedy march of co-education. Stephen Leacock, an eminent American educationist declares with emphasis, “Men...

Co Education in Schools

...Co-Education means the teaching of both boys and girls in the same school and under the same roof. It also means imparting the same education to both the sexes without any distinction. This system of education aims at bringing boys and girls together. It allows free mixing of sexes without any inhibition. The great Greek philosopher, Plato had propagated the system of co-education in the ancient times. He believed that co-education will create a feeling of comradeship between boys and girls. Plato was a great supporter of the education of women. Therefore, he wanted them to be educated with men in the same institutions. He felt that if men and women are taught together, it will develop their personality to the maximum. They will not feel any shyness from each other. He advocated that it was the only method in which both could become useful members of the society. Plato in reality was much influenced by the co-educational system of Sparta, a city of Greece. There the boys and girls were given both the academic and physical education together. The girls and boys studied and played together. They were both taught the art of fighting, horse riding, archery etc. Thus the women of Sparta were not in any inferior to men. In ancient India also, there was no segregation between boys and girls in the Aryan society. In the modern times, co-educational system is prevalent in Europe and USA. In India also, now-a-days more and more co-educational schools and colleges are being established...

Co-Education vs Single-Sex School

...Nowadays, more and more people have noticed the phenomena that girls have been overtaking boys. The proportion of boys going to colleges is becoming smaller and smaller. Girls have been seeing doing better in different levels of the school. Therefore, a question being raised by the public is that between co-education and single-sex education, which will benefit our children more? As a teacher and parent, I strongly believe that the latter is a good choice. Gender-based classes can improve our children’s academic achievement through proper approaches suitable for their learning styles, foster better behaviors through promotion of role models and encourage them to explore who they truly are. [ok] As everyone acknowledges that each person has his own learning style, the learning style between boys and girls is not an exception, they are every different due to their physical and metal development. The development of boys’ reading ability is slower than girls’. Boys tend to be more active than girls. When boys know the answer they can’t wait to shout it out, in stead of girls would rather just understand and know the reason. The uneven development attributes to their different learning styles. For the better achievement, separating girls and boys to adapt approaches that fit their learning styles is the best way we can do. For example, in my grade one classroom, it seems like a disaster for boys to sit down to read, even the story they loved to listen. To girls, reading is such...

Co-Teaching in Urban Secondary School Districts to Meet the Needs of All Teachers and Learners: Implications for Teacher Education Reform

...Disabilities Education Improvement Act (IDEIA) reauthorized in 2004 (Pub. L. No. 108-466) and the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act of 2001 (Pub. L. No. 107–110), require that students with increasingly diverse learning characteristics have access to and achieve high academic performance in the general education curriculum. The changing demographics of the United States have also played a role in diverse learning characteristics of the American learners in classrooms today. With an educational system that serves approximately 76,355,000 students, 30,982,000 or 40.58% are of an ethnically diverse background and 5% of school age children have a disability (U.S. Census Bureau, 2008). These changing legal requirements and student demographics in United States educational systems combine pointing to the need for increased collaborative planning and teaching among school personnel attempting to comply with these legal mandates to serve all students fairly and equitably in general education classrooms. Co-teaching is an approach that helps educators meet both IDEIA and NCLB mandates, and is defined as “two or more people sharing responsibility for teaching some or all of the students assigned to a classroom” (Villa, Thousand, & Nevin, 2008, p. 5). In schools within the United States, co-teaching often involves general education and special education teachers working together in one classroom and used as a supplementary aid and service that can be brought to general education to serve...

Merck and Vioxx Drug Recall

...Case Study: Merck and the Vioxx Recall Kelvin Gabel Benedictine University Case Study: Merck and the Vioxx Recall According to Lawrence and Weber (2014), former Merck CEO George W. Merck implied a corporate vision of social responsibility for Merck & Co., Inc. (Merck) when he stated in 1950 that medicine was for the people and that loyalty to that concept would lead to greater profits. On the surface, it appears Merck has historically lived its declared mission of putting people first. This is demonstrated by the company forfeiting patent and profits from the antibiotic streptomycin and the drug Mectizan (Lawrence, 2014). Merck was well rewarded for its people first philosophy. Though it was ranked fifth in asset and market value, it ranked first in profits. Additionally the company had a stellar reputation of being perceived as the most ethical and socially responsible of the major drug companies (Lawrence, 2014). Today Merck Pharmaceutical’s mission statement is “to discover, develop and provide innovative products and services that save and improve lives around the world (Merck, 2015).” Reading Merck’s current mission statement lacks both the compassion of placing people first and the implied social responsibility of Mr. Merck’s statement in 1950. To be contextually correct historically in forming a view of Merck and the Vioxx recall issue, I sought to find a corporate mission statement from the period of the recall which was in 2006. According to Culp...

The Role of the Gods in Daphnis and Chloe

...In his prologue to Daphnis and Chloe, Longus refers to his four books as “a0na/qhma me\n7!Eroti kai\ Nu/mfaij kai\ Pani/” (Pr 2.3-4). Coming before any of the action of the novel, the reader asks, and for good reason, why these three gods or sets of gods? Then in the final book, Daphnis gives “a0naqh/mata…tw~| Dionu/sw|…tw~| Pani\...tai~j Nu/mfaij” (4.26.6-8). Here Dionysus has filled the place of Eros, or, as I shall argue, Dionysus represents the same universal force as Eros in the earlier books. These divinities, Eros/Dionysus, Pan, and the Nymphs, directly influence the lives of the titular protagonists. Their influence serves different purposes depending on what the situation calls for, but, overall, the influences could be labeled as such: Eros/Dionysus controls their lives, the Nymphs nurture the youths, and Pan enflames their passion. In many Greek novels, Eros functions as a stock figure, “not much more than a convenient method of setting [the] plot in motion” (Turner 119). Critics have heavily studied the role of Eros in this novel, and many find that the text of Daphnis and Chloe can be seen as an introductory text for syncretic monotheistic religions, specifically that of Orphic Dionysus. This argument holds valid, yet, I think, over reads the text, and Chalk admits as an introductory text, it is merely “allusive” and not clearly instructive (36). Philetas certainly describes the “cosmic Eros” found in Hesiod’s Theognis in his interaction with Eros in his garden...
