This chapter talks about communication as it relates to perception. Perception is the processes of selection, organization, and interpretation of the information that is collected through our senses like what we see, hear, taste, smell, and touch.
Selection is choosing which sensory information to focus on when communicating,
Organization is the way by which one recognizes what sensory input represents are in communication, and Interpretation is the act of assigning meaning to sensory information during communication. In the picture presented, when you first look at it you will notice two people a man and a woman learning. If you look further you will see that it looks like the woman is teaching the man and show him something in the book. Now the physical factors in this case that will affect their communicating will be visual acuity, sense of smile and hearing acuity. Visual acuity in the sense that it is a woman teaching a man if she is no his mother or sister and she happens to be a friends from let’s say school, he might be attracted to her and the will distract him from paying attention to whatever she is teaching him and it will affect their communication. Sense of smile could also play a big factor if in the same scenario and she happen to be smiling good he will be distracted by the smile and he will not communicate properly. In hearing acuity also with the same scenario, the fact that he might be interested in her might aid him in paying more attention and contributing to the lessons so he will not look less intelligent. Cognitive complexity of constructs in this case will be based on the interests and the experiences. The interest in this case is shown by how both of the people in the picture seem to be focused on the book in front of them and they don’t look discouraged but rather encouraged to be reading whatever is in front of them. Now the experiences is shown in the picture by the fact that she seems to be pointing at something in the book as if she is teaching him something the is expressed in the book, and he seems attentive and looks ready to learn. Now interpretation of this picture could be shown in the elements of knowledge and emotional state, where knowledge is expressed by both of the people in the picture’s look of interest in whatever book they are learning from and how focus they are to whatever they are reading. The emotional state will be the smile on both of their faces indicating that they like what they are reading or one enjoys teaching and the other enjoy been thought. Cultural and social factors have and will always continue to influence our perception and communication, because our cultural background has shaped us from our youth to our adult years and we pass on whatever we learn to the next generation who will grow and pass it on. Now for example if in you culture it is a sin for two men or two women to kiss or be in a relationship and you are to keep away from such people, what do you think will happen if you go to a country that they are allowed to do whatever pleases them, you will go crazy and you will think that you are in hell because your culture teaches you so. What will end up happening is you will keep away from everybody who is in such relationship and will think of them as sinners, and the will intern think if you as unfriendly. Now this same thing could be applied to social factors where in your social group it is not acceptable for you to talk to gays or lesbians and you will be force to avoid them is you want to be socially accepted. In conclusion communication and perception can be influence in so main ways but will always come down to the basic ways that is shown in the book. Then also can be changed as time goes on, so as long as we keep interacting with each other there will be more way for our communication and perception to change.
