The Coach Collector
Everyone has a collection of something, whether they realize it or not. Many people casually collect items as they live their daily lives, picking up a series of this or that as they happen across them. Some will spend considerable amounts of time and money scouring the world for specific pieces they must have in their collection. A few of us have dismissed the idea of collecting until a friend opens up a kitchen cabinet and announces “WOW, that’s quite a collection of coffee cups you have there!” At this point, one of two things usually happens. Either 10 coffee cups immediately get thrown away, or each time we’re in a store, garage sale, or the best friend’s house, we find ourselves looking at coffee cups to add to the cupboard. I don’t consciously collect too many things. Ironically I DO have a small collection of Starbucks coffee cups, but I’m getting it under control. One group of items that I have collected for many years and have a deep appreciation for is my assortment of Coach products. I’ve learned, through 10 plus years of collecting Coach, that most people associate the company with lady’s purses and handbags. The truth is the company is quite diverse and offers a large selection of high quality products, giving avid treasure seekers like me many opportunities to find additions to our collection. Coach, Inc., as we know it today, began life in 1941 in a Manhattan, NY loft with six artisan leatherworkers handcrafting small leather goods like wallets and handbags. The small company was modestly successful until, in 1961, things changed. Miles Cahn, who was running the company at the time, came across a method of processing leather that produced a soft yet strong and durable product. During this time, most purses and handbags were constructed with thin layers of leather glued over cardboard. Using the new, high quality cowhide to craft their items with, Coach quickly became recognized as a leader in high end leather products. During the 1960’s, Coach partnered with Bonnie Cashin, a well-known fashion designer of the era. Cashin’s work not only revolutionized the design of the existing product line, but she also introduced many additional items for Coach such as shoes, eyewear, pens, and key fobs. Her work brought the company out of a niche market and introduced Coach to the mainstream. Business continued to stay strong throughout the 1970’s and ‘80’s with mail order, specialty stores, and partnerships with major department stores feeding consumer demand. Soon, though, Coach was faced with a dilemma. Supply was not keeping up with the public’s desire for their high quality products. Coach made the decision to restrict sales to only hand selected vendors, rather than expand availability by cutting costs in production in order to create more products faster. This move not only cemented Coach’s standing as a producer of high quality lines, but also created the future collectability of their products. Today Coach retains its prominent standing as a producer of the fine leather handbags and wallets. In addition, they offer an extensive array of women’s and men’s products such as luggage, watches, fragrances, business accessories, and even pet products. Now that you know a little more about Coach, let me help you begin your own collection. Collections can begin in various ways and for many different reasons. My husband, for instance, collects vintage cameras and film projectors. He considers each piece he owns a work of art, which I assumed was the reason he began acquiring them many years ago. I learned, though, that the reason he initially began collecting them runs deeper than I imagined. His grandparents passed away when he was rather young, depriving him of that special relationship. What he did have, however, was a rich narrative of their lives through an extensive amount of photographs and 8mm films. Years of watching home movies of African safaris, weddings, graduations, and simple life moments helped him form a relationship with his grandparents by seeing how they lived. These experiences also sparked an interest in how they chronicled their life, the tools that they used. Thus, a lifelong interest was born in the cameras and projectors of their era. My initial and continued interest in Coach came from a deep family connection as well. My mother and I have always been very close, and like many mothers and daughters, we have experienced differing opinions about many things in life. One of the things we share a passion for and we know will always provide lighthearted bonding time, though, is shopping for our Coach. My mother introduced me to the company so long ago when I was a very young 20. I had just received my first credit card and it was searing a hole in my pocket. I needed to hand that piece of plastic to someone and say “charge it”. My mother looped her arm through mine and offered some sage advice. She asked that if I was bound and determined to buy something, wouldn’t I be happiest if I acquired a product that would not only announce my status as a young woman of means, but continue to provide quality and durability for years to come? With bright eyes and a knowing smile, she held out a beautiful black Coach purse to me. The soft leather, heavy metal clasps, and rich satin interior had me hooked from that moment. She explained to me that other women will initially judge me by two things, my shoes and my purse. I was told that I had the shoes nailed, so now I should consider completing the pair with only the highest quality I could afford. Now my mother obviously comes from the generation of women who believe that accessories make the woman, but I couldn’t deny that I was smitten. After much searching, comparing, and knuckle biting, I became the proud owner of my first Coach bag. I still own that bag, and, on the rare occasion I bring it out, it continues to provide me with the satisfaction of knowing I made the right choice. Getting back to starting your collection, I’d like to share some of the unlikely places I’ve been able to find hidden treasures that will not only help you with a Coach find, but many other products as well. My husband, bless his heart, helped me learn a great deal about collecting. He made the excellent observation that America, in general, is a very “disposable” society. We are obsessive about the “new” and when the thrill of acquiring something new and exciting wears off, many of us turn to donating, garage sales, or ebay as a way to quickly dispose of something perfectly good. The next new and exciting thing is out there waiting for us and what we bought last year is now cluttering up our lives. That’s where the collector steps in. I’ll gladly take that off your hands because I know it will provide me with years of enjoyment, and you’ll miss it eventually! I’ll admit that I was once a prude who wouldn’t dream of buying “secondhand”. My shopping for my beloved Coach was limited to either the Mall or the fabulous Factory Outlet where quality, new Coach items are offered at a fraction of retail prices. That was until I was dragged, kicking and screaming, into a Goodwill store. The person I was with wanted to look for some antique cameras, big surprise. I was wandering around, checking my watch every two minutes, when a strikingly smooth piece of leather caught my eye. When I pulled it out of the pile it was in, I couldn’t believe I was holding a vintage Coach handbag in the middle of a thrift store. I immediately found my husband and waved it in front of him saying “Look what I found, can you believe it?!” He simply shrugged and said “Yeah, I see women pulling those things out all the time in here.” I stared at him for a moment, quietly considering where to bury his body. He quickly realized the danger he was in and shuffled away, mumbling something about looking at books or some nonsense. I casually strolled up to the counter and asked how much it cost and couldn’t believe my ears. After handing over my hard earned $20, I realized that an entirely new world had just opened up to me. My collection now had avenues of discovery that I never knew existed. I grabbed book boy and told him we were leaving, we needed to MapQuest all the second hand stores in town. From there, I changed my whole way of thinking. I’ve found Coach in many thrift stores throughout the years. Some have been imitations, which are fairly easy to identify due to lesser quality material used to make them, but most have been beautifully preserved examples of fine quality craftsmanship. Online auction sites like Ebay and Shopgoodwill.com are treasure troves full of not only Coach products, but many high quality lines such as Louis Vuitton, Kate Spade, and Dooney and Burke. Collecting Coach has provided many years of enjoyment for me. Even more enjoyable is introducing someone you care about to collecting and sharing a passion for it. You will become closer to that person, as my mother and I have. The hardest part is that first piece, whether it’s a handbag, a piece of china, or (sigh) even an old camera. Find something you connect to in some way, and have fun filling a part of your life with it.

Coach

...Roosevelt, Utah crowded into their locker room only to hear their coach ask them to turn in their jerseys. Coach Matt Labrum had had enough with how his players were acting off of the field. Some of his players were getting in trouble for skipping classes while others were receiving punishment for being involved in cyber-bullying. Labrum decided that the best way to teach his team a lesson was to disband the football team, requiring his players to earn it all back. Instead of practicing after school, it was required that the team participate in community service as well as character-building classes. Labrum said that if the boys participated and followed through with what was being asked of them they will have “earned the privilege to play.” To those who might hear of this story, it would be a little controversial; a whole team suspended because of mistakes that only some were making. In reality though, the coach made the right decision. “It is an honor to play sports and represent your entire school and community to other districts,” says Athletic Director, Nick McIlwain. “If a team or player is not representing the school and community in the proper light, as it sounds like with this situation, the coach was justified to take action to ensure that his players would live up to high ethical conduct and shine a positive light on the school and community.” As a coach, it is important not only to be a coach, but also a mentor and role model. By taking the steps necessary...

Pre-Coaching Plan True coaching is the art of asking the one pertinent question, and then giving the client all the necessary space and time to work with it, all the way to complete and very practical client satisfaction (Cardon, 2008). Head Basketball Coach Observation

...For this assignment were asked to go to a game or practice and observe a coach. The coach I chose to observe and write about was, the Head Basketball Coach here at Iowa Central Community College. The coach’s communication style was a mixture of submissive and command. He was quite for the majority of the game, taking on a nonverbal approach. When he did coach he was defiantly using the command style. His aggression towards the players and the game is made clear from the bench. At times I agree with it others I do not. Some of the players except the style well, while others react poorly. I have mentioned in past articles, the coach must figure out what each of his players responds best too. The coach motivates the players by talking to...

...to lose in order to learn from their mistakes and to become a better athlete. I think sports fans who never played a sport, do not understand the true meaning of winning and losing. They need to realize no athlete or team is perfect. They never experienced the feelings that come with winning and losing. If they did, then they could better relate with their sports teams and favorite athletes. In the section, Professional Context, pages 143 and 144, discusses the coach’s role in winning and losing. Sociologist Harry Edwards quoted, “In American society, it is commonly accepted that the success or failure of an athletic unit depends almost entirely upon the competence or incompetence of its coach.” (Llewellyn, p. 143). I agree and disagree with this quote because it can go both ways. A coach should set the tone and example of how the team should act and play, but at the same time, it is up to the athlete to put in the hard work and dedication to the game and team. A team’s success does not...

Coach Wooden Research Paper

...Like many coach’s, I’ve always been a big fan of Coach John Wooden. He is a legendary college basketball coach who led UCLA to 10 national championships and one of the winningest programs in sports history. I’ve been an avid reader of any books I could find from Coach Wooden and highly recommend reading any of his books on leadership. He led with integrity and was an example of doing things the right way. We see a lot of coach’s now that relish in the spotlight and are driven by ego. They tirade on the sidelines yelling and screaming putting on a show. Coach Wooden, believed and demonstrated self-control and was a big believer in controlling your emotions. He always referred to himself as a teacher first. One of his major teachings...

Your Team Is Only as Good as Your Coach

...team’s cohesion has long been researched. The factors that coaches use in their coaching method and the way that athletes perceive their coach can make or break a winning team. This study examines the connection between a coach’s ability to coach and a team’s cohesiveness. A Team is Only as Good as Their Coach Numerous researchers have studied the correlation between a coach’s method of coaching and team performance. One of the most notable theoretical models used to investigate coaching behavior is Chelladurai’s Multidemensional Model of Leadership. This model shows the coach’s behavior as viewed from three perspectives: the behavior that is preferred by the athlete, the behavior that is required by the situation and the actual behavior of the coach. It has long been assumed that a team’s performance and satisfaction are a direct result of the coach’s behavior (Carron, Hausenblas & Eys, 2005). Athletes look to coaches that foster friendship, mutual trust heightened respect and interpersonal warmth (Shields, Gardner, Bredemeier & Bostro, 1997). What is a Coach’s Perfect Behavior? The perfect behavior of a successful coach is a combination of different styles of training, democratic style, autocratic style, social support and positive feedback (Carron, et. Al., 2005). It takes many years to become a perfect coach, it is often wondered if coaches are taught or born into their profession. Just as players come and go and continually get traded, so...

Coach Carter Essay

...Movies not only serve as a source of relaxation but also inspires people in many different ways. ‘Coach Carter’ is a movie that really has many valuable lessons on leadership qualities, motivation, team work, communication and goal setting. Here, I’m going to elaborate the way these concepts are integrated into the movie along with gripping real life examples and some valuable quotes. Economic recession happens periodically and employees would be laid off from the company during that time. Some of the companies equip their employees with vital skills during recession period and improve the organization’s prospect. This in turn would increase the loyalty and organizational commitment of the employees. The same concept is applied here in ‘Coach Carter’. CARTER’S INTRODUCTION Carter owns a sports shop and he was asked by his former high school, an inner city public school in Richmond, California https://groups.yahoo.com/group/arrahmanfans/surveys?id=3166059 https://groups.yahoo.com/group/arrahmanfans/surveys?id=3166059to train their defeated basketball team for a handsome salary. Coach Carter Review

...Coach Carter Review The fundamental elements of character for Coach Ken Carter, in the film “Coach Carter” were honesty, self-knowledge, and integrity. Honesty because he told the players what he expected from them in the beginning. Self-knowledge because he asked each player to think about what they wanted from the game of basketball, and helped them to realize it wasn’t just a game. The truth of the matter it was about finding your goal in what you want to accomplish in life. However playing basketball came out to be a chance for them to shine and lift a community and themselves out of negative situations, provided they make the correct decision. Finally integrity when it comes to holding players accountable for their behavior, Coach Carter stood by what he was teaching. He cancelled a game when he found that players were not honoring the promises they had made to him to stay eligible by the contract they signed. Coach Carter dealt with many things in this film such as unruly players, administration and parents that were not willing to go the extra mile in his support for education of his ball players. However, the biggest dilemma the coach faced in this movie was whether or not to suspend players or games because of a lack of adherence to rules he had set in place before the season started. He told the players they each must maintain a certain GPA, and must attend all classes, sit in the front of the classroom, and he would also be getting progress reports...

Meeting Coach Ken Carter

...On November 10th, Coach Ken Carter came to speak to the students at Radford University. I am a huge fan of the movie “Coach Carter”, and was very excited to see him in person and hear what he had to say. I was very impressed, to say the least. He started off his presentation by running down the aisles blowing a whistle. It startled me at first, but I thought it was an extremely creative opener. Since I was thoroughly involved in theatre back in high school, I couldn’t help but notice how Samuel L. Jackson captured Ken’s persona so perfectly. His demeanor and charismatic charm reminded me so much of the movie! Ken talked about several different things, but the main theme of his speech was to work hard and see it pay off. He brought up several valid points that I will definitely remember. One thing that he talked about that was important was to “look the part”. In my fraternity, we are always working hard to obtain a business casual attire when we conduct professional interviews, and I am also required to dress this way when I go to my internship. He brought up the fact that if you look the part, people will take you seriously. The best part of the presentation, in my opinion, was when he asked a young lady to come up to the front of the audience. He gave her a $20 bill. She respectfully took it. He then pulled out a $1 bill and autographed it. He then asked her which one she would rather have and she immediately pulled out the autographed $1 bill. He connected it to real life...
