Altovise, thanks for your post. You made an interesting point regarding coaching. I liked your statement, “my supervisor knew I was strategizing towards a job in human resource for the past two years. In the last six months, I receive more coaching now than in my entire 20+ years in the work field because I am closer to my graduation. My supervisor wants to make sure I reach my goal and become successful as a human resource associate and he believes for me to do that, I must change the way I perceive things. My thought process must be change and how I handle people must change, also. Coaching sessions has helped me tremendously and now I can truly say I am prepare and ready for the new challenge I will face as I transition to a new place in

An Evaluation of the Mentoring/Coaching Experience and the Skills Developed Together with Impact on Own Professional Development and Action Plan for Development of Knowledge and Skills.

...The aim of this essay is to evaluate my mentoring experiences. It will also discuss skills that I have developed and how that has impacted on my professional development. I intend to provide an action plan for my development of knowledge and skills as a mentor. I have worked within a large primary school for ten years and probably for about the last five years have been mentoring more inexperienced teachers in an informal capacity. Murray (2001) in www.ttrb.ac.uk website defines this kind of mentoring as: “The deliberate pairing of a more skilled or experienced person with someone with less skill or experience with a mutually agreed goal of having the less skilled person grow and develop specific competences.” (pg Xiii) I have enjoyed this kind of informal mentoring and have gained much from working with different colleagues, as each NQT brings something different as part of their personality and experiences. More recently and more formally I have mentored a final placement PGCE student and this academic school year, who I am basing this portfolio on, an NQT student and a first year PGCE student. Both of which have been totally different mentoring and coaching experiences especially with mentees being at different stages of their career. A number of writers/researchers hold the debate over the definition of coaching and mentoring. With the NQT student I feel I have taken on more of a coaching role for example Whitmore...

People and Leadership

...Introduction In case, as a team leader, I am trying to correct one of subordinate’ behaviours and point out shortcomings, however, the relationship with subordinate becomes more difficult. Unskillful communication ability could affect subordinates’ working efficiency directly, which means I need working overtime to cope with team project that is a delay by some subordinate. Because I do not delegate workload on the basis of each team member’s timetable. As can be seen that weakly supportive communication skills and lack of efficient and effective time management skills severely impact my life. This essay will base on this personal experience as a case study to analyse those two skills by using Kolb’s experiential learning cycle. Reflective observation Firstly, this essay will analyse two skills by the skill assessment to reflect and observe the experience from many different perspectives. First is supportive communication. According to MBIT test, my personality is ESTJ (The supervisors), which means a person with this personality are taking an outspoken leadership role that could affect communication skills (Hogan & Champagne 1980). Based on people assessment management skills (PAMS) (Whetten & Cameron 2011, p. 24), the score of supportive communication is 77.78%, which is the weakest one. According to my case, the interpersonal relationship will not become strengthen when I try to correct subordinate’s behaviour at some time. Furthermore, I will give some advice...

...Gibbs Reflective Assignment On Non-Verbal Communication With A Patient With Demenita Introduction This assignment is a reflective account of my first experience when assisting a patient to eat lunch. For the purpose of this assignment I will refer to this patient as Mrs C to maintain confidentiality and comply with the NMC code (2008). It will discuss the importance of non-verbal communication when providing effective nursing care to the elderly. Description Thoughts and Feelings Evaluation I felt this first experience was very rewarding and a big learning curve for me in caring for others. I was delighted that I had been able to support Mrs C to eat nearly all of her meal which she clearly enjoyed. The ‘protected mealtime’ policy ensured that I had time to dedicate to assist her and as she did not have the ability to feed herself, without my help she would have eaten very little or nothing at all. In order to communicate with Mrs C, I modified the usual rules of communication. I did not speak to Mrs C in an inappropriate way or use elder talk which may have damaged her self esteem and confidence (Argle 1994). I talked to her as I would address any adult but put more emphasis on non-verbal communication which according to Caris Verhallen (1999) is the main way in which humans communicate, in order for her to receive my message, extract the meaning and give me feedback. By holding Mrs C’ gaze I was maintaining communication and encouraging engagement and interaction...

Up until the late 1980’s/early 1990’s, most graduates that progressed from university found satisfactory employment within a short amount of time and were able to earn a sufficiently high income. At that time the preparation for employment often implied the knowledge and technical skills required for the occupation. The introduction of The Further and Higher Education Act in 1992 made changes to the funding of most higher education institutions which resulted in 35 polytechnics gaining university status. E.g. Leeds Met, Manchester Met. It was around the same time that the UK Government proposed universities should develop the core/transferable/generic...

Personal Development Plan and Essay

...Major Individual Essay During this time of exploration I have exposed experiences that have had a significant impact on how I see myself. One incident related to a less than one-minute interaction forty years ago. As I was thinking about my life story and self-development trajectory I recalled an interstate holiday to Queensland when I was 10 years old. My parents, avid antique collectors, were looking for a grandfather clock and made an enquiry to a shopkeeper if he had any clocks to sell. The shopkeeper responded to my father’s query and proceeded to say he did have a beautiful Victorian grandfather clock and said “oh it’s over there just near your son” and he was pointing at me….This event had a profound impact on how I have viewed myself and now forty years later a place to start for some great opportunities for improvement. As Eleanor Roosevelt said,“No one can make you feel inferior without your consent”. | Introduction I made a decision at the start of the semester to use the subject as a catalyst to create some changes in my professional life. I came into this subject with a plan to work out how to improve my working relationship with a colleague who I perceived as overbearing and a dictator. Over the past twelve weeks I have dissected not only this relationship but also my career, myself and my future. I am, to most, seen as a successful executive and leader. Based on the success symbols of our western society such as being goal oriented, having a clear...

The Craftsmanship of Jamaican Woodwork

...THE CRAFTSMANSHIP OF JAMAICAN WOODWORK Submitted May 2, 2010 Amended September 28, 2013 Michaelia Henry ID No. 0210073 M.Arch 1 Course: Critical Theories in Architecture Lecturer: Arch. Jacquiann Lawton Critical Theories in Architecture: Modernity Exploring Research Methodology – Writing Dialectical History Thesis Statement Craftsmanship is the basic human impulse to do a job well for its own sake. It involves Creative Thought, Precision, Apprenticeship, Crafting an Object Well, adhering to The Structure of the Workshop and the Practice of the Intelligent Hand. Contemporary Jamaican Woodcraft is an example of Craftsmanship. Introduction Fashioning furniture, doors, windows and other architectural elements out of timber is an old practice. Before the industrial period, many of these items would be crafted by hand. The effort and care taken to create each piece; seen in the final product. This is one way of romanticizing traditional woodwork. A more cynical view would be to criticize the minor imperfections of these pieces – the uneven pattern created by carving by hand, the lack of perfect symmetry in the manmade spindle form. This cynical view has some validity – if; the priority of making the object is the actualization of perfection. Social commentators like Richard Sennett believe this kind of priority misses the true point of Craftsmanship – the desire to do something well for its own sake. I agree. The actualization of Craftsmanship is not about the making a perfect object...
