My definition of leadership is to be able to communicate clearly and effectively with my subordinates as well as my superiors. I will speak clear and intelligible about the vision of the command and commandant. A good leader must be positive and inspiring to his troops and informative to his superiors. Leaders will seek out opportunities to make changes and not be afraid to fail. They will fail at certain times, but a good leader will learn from his mistakes and downfalls and project positive attitude while correcting the mistake. A leader completes the tasks at hand and prepares for the next challenge. The leader is committed to his job and projects that positive attitude to all his subordinates so they will follow without question. …show more content…
He was part of the “greatest generation” and the amount of life they witnessed was more than anyone in our history. My father influenced me to work hard and never give up on anything. Those words constantly resonate in my mind over and over. My other influences were my first unit chiefs. They were hard yet understanding and played a vital role in my decision making processes today. My wife and my two sons keep me young and give me the love and understanding that has made my Coast Guard career a success. After almost 20 years out of the Coast Guard my son wanted to join the legacy and I wanted to promote and inspire him to do his best by stating to him that if I could I would join the reserves. Valuing these concepts make me a better leader as long as I keep them in check. It is a good practice to have someone you can check in with to make sure you are still on the right path. My family is that gauging process. Sometimes I don’t know when my skills as a leader are working well with being the head of household and the chief. Using the family entity to help keep me on an even keel will yield a better leader at work. “Happy wife happy life “To have honor among your peers and integrity throughout your daily process will make the transparency issue easy. You don’t have to have a good memory if you always tell the truth. Along with my philosophy, I must make sure that I promote ideas among my crew and give proper attention and positive feedback. I promote ambition, competence, and respect among my peers. I use the concept of finding out the best in someone and working off of it instead of finding the negative and beating them

The crash was a result of the deviation off the preplanned route (Del Valle, S. 2012). Captain Francesco Schettino is said to have traveled too close to the island hitting a granite reef that tore a hole in the side. What happened next was a disaster that resulted in 32 deaths (theguardian.com, 2013). Captain Schettino did not order an evacuation, or fully inform the authorities of the dire situation on board until an hour after the crash. The passengers aboard had not yet completed the safety drills on board and the crew on board seemed to lack the correct leadership in a disaster situation to properly assist passengers on board resulting greater loss of life (Del Valle, 2012).
