Bolivia produces almost half of the world’s supply of coca leaf and coca paste; specifically they produce 40-45% of these products (Codrea, 2013). The growing of the coca leaf has been increasing in Bolivia since the early 2000’s, even with the drop of production 2011; drug rates still remain high in Bolivia. With the growth of the leaf increasing, means more access to cocaine in the country and more trafficking of this drug to other countries. Even the president of Bolivia started his political career as a coca leaf grower. Another key aspect to the increase of this cocaine is because the amount of money the famers who are growing these leaves are making more money than a great portion of the country. Of the 35,000 producers of coca leaves the net worth can reach up to $9,000 annually from the production of 2.2 acres (Codrea, 2013). Since Bolivia is the third largest producer of cocaine, the distribution in and out of the country happens on a daily basis. The most common places Bolivia is known for distributing too is Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Paraguay, and Europe. With the lack of governmental success of claiming to try and stop drug trafficking the production of cocaine still continues to be a major issue. Without the proper enforcement of laws, border patrol, and control of coca growth, Bolivia continues to remain at high risk for drug trafficking. Since Bolivia is the third largest producer of cocaine, the first step that’s need to be done is law enforcement enforcing the laws against growing coca for cocaine use.
