...HOW CAN COCONUT OIL BE USED IN THE DIET? Coconut oil can be substituted for any solid or liquid oil, lard, butter or margarine in baking or cooking on the stove, and can be mixed directly into foods already prepared. Some people take it straight with a spoon, but for most people it may be hard to swallow this way and more pleasant to take with food. When cooking on the stove, coconut oil smokes if heated to greater than 350 degrees or medium heat. You can avoid this problem by adding a little olive or peanut oil. Coconut oil can be used at any temperature in the oven when mixed in foods. WHAT IS THE NUTRIENT CONTENT OF COCONUT OIL? DOES IT CONTAIN OMEGA-3 FATTY ACIDS? Coconut oil has about 117-120 calories per tablespoons, about the same as other oils. It contains 57-60% medium chain triglycerides, which are absorbed directly without the need for digestive enzymes. Part of it is metabolized by the liver to ketones which can be used by most cells in the body for energy. This portion of the coconut oil is not stored as fat. Coconut oil is about 86% saturated fat, most of which is the medium chain fats that are metabolized differently than animal saturated fats. It contains no cholesterol and no transfat as long as is non-hydrogenated. An advantage of a saturated fat is that there is nowhere on the molecule for free radicals or oxidants to attach. About 6% of the oil is monounsaturated and 2% polyunsaturated. Coconut oil also contains a small amount of phytosterols...

...Organic Virgin Coconut Oil - A Healthy Oil The Coconut Oil Story Virgin Coconut Oil: An introduction For about 3960 years of the of the past 4000 years of the documented historical use of the fruits of the coconut palm as a food and a pharmaceutical, the news has all been good. It was seen as a sustainable resource from which the harvested materials influenced every aspect of the lives of tropical communities, but most importantly its fruit, the coconut flesh, water, milk and oil. The use of coconut oil around the world in tropical regions is prolific: South and Central America, Africa, the Indian subcontinent, Micro-, Mele- and Poly-nesia and most of Asia. The uses are so respected that they were documented by Ayurvedic medicine in Sanskrit from 1500BC in all areas relating to the mind, body and spirit. Early European explorers including Captain Cook wrote affectionately about the beauty of communities across the Pacific using coconut oil as an integral part of their daily lives. During WWII the water of the young green coconut was successfully used as a substitute for a saline drip saving the lives of many allied soldiers. After the war, in England coconut oil was sold as "margarine" and in the USA as "coconut butter". However, this all changed in 1954. In the social environment of the USA in which coronary heart disease (CHD) was becoming the primary cause of mortality in the adult population, the young researcher David Kritchevsky published two academic papers. The initial...

...Coconut Oil and Calamansi Peelings As Agent for Hair Oil Chapter I. Introduction A. Background Of the Study The hair is our crowning glory that holds true for most people since it is one of the things that leave a lasting impression when we first meet someone. The way that we carry our hair, our haircut, our hairstyle and even hair texture are all visible traits that can greatly affect the way that other people look at you. This is the reason why we need to take extra care of our hair. Our hair and scalp, just like our skin needs special care and attention. One way of caring our hair is by using hair oil. This research is about the possibility of oil extracted from calamansi peeling as preservative for hair oil. Hair oil is commonly used by people who have dry hair especially girls. Hair oil moisturizes the scalp, it provides hair into the sebaceous glands and promotes hair growth. The calamansi peelings we need in this study is abundant in the Philippines. We can directly find them in our kitchen, etc. Calamansi peelings contain a preservative called Pectin that is generally used in preserving jams and jellies. In this study, we commonly use the extract of calamansi peelings which has pectin to preserve the fragrance of the coconut oil and which at the same time gives an additional fragrance to the oil. This study employs the importance of this experiment to our economy in the country. B. Statement of the Problem This study will determine the feasibility...

...Monique Going all natural is best. Leaving behind expensive, chemical heavy hair products for more natural remedies, can only be good for your hair. Nature is always the best provider when it comes to your hair. Protein is the basic building block of your body. Your hair no different. In the case of hair, the protein involved is called keratin. This protein is primarily used and produced in your hair follicles. Hair is actually the accumulation of dead hair cells that have been pushed through the scalp at the opening of the follicles. Your hair will grow about 6 inches over a year. Did you know that you lose about 100 strands of hair per day? This sounds like a cause to panic, but you must realize adults have about 100,000 to 150,000 on average. So, the 100 is not really a problem. Originally people would...

...Death is Not Always the Measurement Why do we acclaim a person’s achievements only after the time of their lives? Why is it that the public only opens its eyes to the greatness of a person and his/her achievements after the time of his/her brief existence? Well, I can guess that it is a part of the irony of life as it is evident not only in our nation but in the whole civilization itself. It has become, what it seems to be, a Custom. Whereas a custom based on the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, a Habitual Action and a common practice among people. Late have we appreciated the importance of the person we have lost. And that is NOT however a good indication of a genuine condolence and appreciation of a man’s life. First of all, we are beginning to create a high standard in order for one to achieve recognition. Through these evident ironies of “reliving the lives of those who lost their lives” we are forming a new perspective among all, that for you to become someone we can pattern our lives with, you must first die and lose your life. That for us to be proud of having you in our same country, you must meet your final destination first. I have here a concrete example of what I am exactly talking about. The untimely death of our former DILG officer Jesse Manalastas Robredo indeed shook not only the Bicol region but the entire nation itself. No one expected that a man of honor would reach his demise in the harsh conditions of the shores of Albay. “I lost a Brother” a statement uttered...

...by the polymerization of a 2-carbon acetate unit. In addition to the normal (straight chain) saturated acids, there occur several with hydroxyl groups, and/or one or more double bonds in the carbon chain. the presence of unsaturation (double bonds) in molecules of fatty acids, fats, or soup tend to lower the melting point of these compounds and to cause them to be in the liquid state at room temperature. Thus, vegetable fats are relatively unsaturated and liquid under the ordinary conditions, while animal fats, being relatively more saturated, are solid, or semi-solid, at the same temperature. For this reason, vegetable fats are commonly refereed to as vegetable oils. (We say relatively saturated, or unsaturated because both vegetables oils and animal fats contain saturated and unsaturated chains). The reason why double bonds lower the melting point of a fatty acid chain, is that the sections of the chain attached to the double bond are attached cis-wise to each other (probably because the double bond cis configuration produces a bent chain which does not easily adhere to a neighboring chain by a Van der Waals attraction hence a lower temperature (lower mobility) is required for these molecules to adhere in...
