Brave New World: Technology and the End of Jobs
“Brave New World” is a phrase said many times by people, since Aldous Huxley wrote the novel Brave New World in 1932, every time a greater technology, for anything, comes about; not necessarily referring to Huxley’s book, but more referring to the fact that modern technology is becoming so great that it will/or has downsized companies by replacing the human element. Sure jobs are lost, but is this a bad thing? One would have to really dive into the question and do some in-depth research and analysis to figure out the answer, but maybe there is not a right answer? Whether greater technology advances are better or not, one thing is for certain; people will lose jobs because of it.
Auto plant workers, factories, coal miners, farming, telephone operators, cashiers, tollbooth collectors, and bankers: These are just a few examples of jobs that are being replaced by greater technology in our present day, even some earlier on. Yes, this is a bad thing for the people employed by those jobs, but maybe for the “greater good,” whatever that term, used by many optimistic people, is really supposed to mean, the same technology that ended those jobs will create more jobs or even better jobs--who knows? Maybe the advances in technology aren’t needed, but created because of corporate greed, to minimize a company’s cost to employees and fatten the wallets of the suits on the top floor? These are, of course, assumptions with nothing more than common knowledge, life experiences, and a little research from years of reading and watching the news. Is technology always necessary in the work place? Merriam-Webster dictionary defines Ageism as: “prejudice or discrimination against a particular age-group and especially the elderly.” Companies are dealing with many law suits due to ageism, and are having to spend a ton of money on training their elderly employees on how to use computer programs, smart phones, etc. In a recent article published in Small Business Monthly Jeremy Nulik “Transforming culture is not for the faint of heart, when you do not conduct business as usual, it is not always going to make people happy.” (Nulik). Unfortunately with this time period advances with technology have hurt productivity in many office environments; the internet, and ease of access, can take the blame for that. Nulik makes a good point of (if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it because fixing it might be hurting a business more than helping) but this isn’t always true for every work environment. When one reads a list of jobs, like the ones mentioned above, it is easy to say “Oh sure, I can see how those jobs don’t/shouldn’t exist anymore.” and then go about your day not thinking anything else of it. What people don’t realize though is that that job was someone’s career, lively hood, sole source of income which shouldn’t be dismissed so nonchalantly, but maybe, this hypothetical person, should have thought about whether or not that could happen to them. Some jobs are different than others, and yes some should be replaced with better ones that would help the majority of people/or environment--coal mining being one of those careers. There are a lot of miners in our country who’s many family members depend on that income, but does that mean that job should still exist if we have a better alternative fuel solution than coal for the environment and that’s more affordable for people? Again being assumptive here, but most people would say, “No, coal mining should be shut down if we have the technology to get the same outcome that coal gives us, with less pollution.” Our country is already taking this approach and shutting down many mines. One solution for the miners could be government paid training programs to work in a field that’s replacing them; granted that’s probably easier said than done, but it is one solution. Nowadays if one tries to make a phone call in regards to their bank account or if they need a service of some kind they’ll have to listen to an automated answering service that can drive a person insane! Banking is another job that is a good example of being replaced or depleted by advances in technologies. More advanced ATM’s are replacing tellers; call centers are replacing personal bankers, but is this good? It is a career whose future is in jeopardy of being lost due to technology. St. Louis south county area Vice President Jeremy Mast says, “Bank board members like replacing branches with call centers and SMART ATMs because it lowers their overhead costs and increases profit shares which look great for investors.” (Mast). Like coal miners, where would your bankers go? Small farms become super farms, factories are mostly robots—same for cashiers, so how many government programs would we have to create for all those fields, or is it the employer’s responsibility? Ever since we’ve been a civilization, greater technologies have always ended one job or another. In the article “More Jobs Predicted for Machines, Not People” [referencing mostly from the book, Race Against The Machine, written by Erik Brynjofsson and Andrew McAfee] written by Steve Lohr, published in The New York Times, Lohr writes:
Technology has always displaced some work and jobs. Over the years, many experts have warned — mistakenly — that machines were gaining the upper hand. In 1930, the economist John Maynard Keynes warned of a “new disease” that he termed “technological unemployment,” the inability of the economy to create new jobs faster than jobs were lost to automation (Lohr).
Some people would look at advanced technology as an improvement or smarter, but it’s probably because they haven’t had their career in jeopardy yet. When one hears of these careers ending because-- robots are more efficient, we’re saving our future environment, or their job just isn’t necessary one should ask “Is it necessary, or are some board members lining their walls with money. And why can’t the greatest country in the world create government programs to protect the people’s job that are possibly in jeopardy?”

Cody Duncan

...Cody Duncan Cody Duncan is a photographer from California. He mainly focuses on landscapes and mountains in his photos. A photograph by Cody Duncan that interests me and catches my eye is “Highway to Arthur’s path – New Zealand”. Cody Duncan took this picture on his travels in New Zealand and from his online blog he quotes “not long after dawn this morning, the van and I alone again, on the road to nowhere” I like this quote that he put with a selection of images from this road because the word alone is proven in the pictures that he took, in a place that looks deserted and peaceful. Also he refers to it as ‘the road to nowhere’ which is what crossed my mind when I first looked at the photo; the road runs off into the horizon. I like this particular image of his because of how much is included in it. I think that it looks like a quiet, empty place and the use of cool blues and greys on the mountains helps to show this. The way that the road begins at the bottom quarter of the photo and then gets narrower as the road continues into the horizon and faintly disappears in the distance, brings a good effect to the photo because it can make you feel as if you are standing where Cody Duncan was stood. The use of the yellow and white lines going down the centre of the road in the picture give off a symmetrical effect because they are right through the centre of the picture and the scenery on each side is very similar. The road seems flat and smooth which I think also makes the photograph...

Juno

...Juno - Review and characterization Juno is a movie made by Jason Reitman. The main character in the movie is Juno MacGuff, and she is a 16 year-old-high-school-student from Minnesota. She finds out about her pregnancy, but cannot believe it at first. She is going to get an abortion, but is distracted by every noise and movement, so she decides to move on, and choose adoption instead. She finds the perfect couple in the newspa-per, and signed a contract with them. Their names are Vanessa and Mark Loring. Mark and Juno have a lot in common, and become good friends. Mark decides to get a divorce, because he is not ready to be a father. Vanessa decides to keep the baby, even though Mark moves on. I think the movie shows how it feels, to be a teenage mum. But the movie does not catch me, be-cause I am not into such movies about young girls and teenage pregnancy. I did not have high hopes for this movie, because it was the second time I saw it, and like I said before, I am not the biggest fan of these kinds of movies. It was hard for me to keep my concentration throughout the entire movie. From another perspective the movie is very helpful, because I learned a lot from it, for exam-ple, it is very good for your parents to know about the baby, and they will help you all the way through. It is very hard dealing with life when you have a baby, and trying to get an education at the same time. My opinion is that, you have to grow up before having a baby, and make sure you are wearing...

Juno Film Essay

...Juno: Film Essay An important idea in the film Juno directed by Jason Reitman, is the idea that all of our choices will have consequences. This idea is shown in many ways throughout the film. For example, Juno’s choice to have un-protected sex, her choice not to abort her baby, and the choice to carry out an adoption even though her plans didn’t turn out the way they had expected, all had following consequences. The protagonist of the film is 16-year-old, Juno MacGuff. Juno has to face the dilemmas of an unexpected pregnancy. She finds what seems to be the perfect adoption couple, but when her adoption plans take a turn for disaster, Juno must dig herself out of her sticky situation and do what’s best for her baby. At the start of the film, Juno decides to have unprotected sex with her close friend, Paulie Bleeker. Her choice to have un-protected sex is a choice she hasn’t taken into a whole lot of consideration, consequently leading Juno to becoming pregnant. The mise-en-scene at the start of the film shows us how Juno now feels about her pregnancy. Juno stands across from the armchair Bleeker and she had sex on, while a voice over says, ‘It started with a chair.’ The armchair seems much larger than Juno even though they are about the same size. The chair represents Juno’s sudden pregnancy, something dominant, something overwhelming her. Juno looks small in comparison to the chair, showing us that she feels small, insignificant and weak. Juno plans to quickly...

Business Structures

...structures based on their needs and the needs of their businesses (Cody, 2007). Entrepreneurs will work comfortably and obtain enough income upon choosing business structures that fulfill their needs accurately. The video shows different business structures from which business entrepreneurs can choose the most suitable structure. The business structures include Sole Proprietorship, Limited Liability Companies, General Partnerships, S Corporations, and Limited Partnerships. This discussion will consider an explanation of how the business structures might and might not be advantageous. Sole Proprietorship is an advantageous business structure because entrepreneurs can start easily without incurring a high financial cost. In addition, entrepreneurs do not require operating documents or annual reports (Cody, 2007). Therefore, Sole Proprietorship will encourage entrepreneurs to start a business by investing a little amount of money. On the other hand, sole proprietorship might not be advantageous because business owners do not have liability protection. Entrepreneurs are liable for any problem that takes place. Sole proprietors pay federal and state taxes on loss and profit (Cody, 2007). Therefore, some individuals may not choose Sole Proprietorship as an appropriate business structure because of the disadvantages. General Partnership favors entrepreneurs because it is simple and requires low cost to establish (Cody, 2007). In addition, partners experience joint and various liabilities...

...William Frederick Cody lived from till 1846–1917, he become Buffalo Bill, was born in a log cabin near LeClaire, Iowa Territory, on February 26, 1846. His dad Isaac, worked variously as a trader, a surveyor, and as overseer for an absentee landowner. Isaac Cody himself was a product of westering pioneers. The first Codys in America were Huguenots who fled France for the Isle of Jersey to escape religious persecution. By 1698 they owned land in Massachusetts. Isaac was born in Ontario in 1811 and grew up in Ohio. Twice widowed, he wed schoolteacher Mary Bonsell Laycock in 1840 in Cincinnati. She was descended of Pennsylvania Quaker pioneers. Only prolonged illness kept Isaac from striking out for California during the gold rush. After the accidental death of Samuel in 1853, the Codys headed west, moving briefly to Missouri then to Kansas where Isaac supplied hay and wood to Ft. Leavenworth and traded with the Kickapoo Indians. Another son, Charles, was born in 1855. Isaac, a man of principal and an active civic leader, was stabbed in 1854 while making a speech against slavery. The attack did not deter him from his economic or political activities, but its lingering effects led to his death in 1857. Bill ("Willie" to his family) and Julia supported...

Essay On Stupid Fast

...The author is causing me to change my view on people. It seems as though the author is trying to get rid of stereotypes such as the jock stereotypes. To Felton, jocks were bullies and becoming friends with your enemies is hard to accomplish, however, Felton has bonded with a few new friends such as Cody Frederick who is a jock. Cody is really kind towards Felton and encourages him as well as aids him whenever Felton needs help. The author is trying to show the reader that stereotypes are not always true and that your enemies can become your friends. The author is doing this by showing the point of view when Felton was scrawny and weird and then showing Felton’s jock point of view. In conclusion, Stupid Fast is an excellent and comical novel. Felton Reinstein is evolving from a scrawny and eccentric person into a jock. There are many themes in the novel including friendship and romance. The author is also very persuasive when it comes to writing and it has caused me to think differently about the different social groups in the novel. Would you like to read...
