you confronted with the help of mathematics
First, let me say math classes are what my nightmares have been made out of since before I even enrolled in college. I had not stepped foot in a classroom in nearly 30 years and my last classroom was untraditional. My last formal math class was when I was in 8th grade in 1981, and because of my untraditional schooling, I had never had to take algebra. This was a problem because I had understanding of it and it did not make sense to me at all. I spent 10 years trying to learn algebra so I could test out of the remedial classes. I had books, videos, friends, and even my children try to teach me algebra. All to no avail, they would give me a rule and I would ask why? And they would say because that is how it is done, …show more content…
So, I lost a decade before I gave in and took remedial algebra I and II with Professor Connell, which, I passed and opened the doorway to college life for me. Which should have been the end the story but, no, the one class I truly wanted to take was college level biology, which had a prerequisite of college algebra. The thought of a college algebra class made my palms sweat and my stomach turn but I thought the career path I wanted to pursue was forensic science and that meant college biology, which meant college algebra. So I pondered this situation for a very long time because I knew that not only would that be an incredibly hard class for me and if I passed it and that was a BIG if, my GPA would definitely take a major hit. At the time my GPA was a 3.9 and I knew that the better my GPA is when I move on to a four year school the more money I could be offered so I protect my GPA the very best I can. Up unto this point I had been working full time and going to school part time but that had changed and being a full time student I talked to my husband and the counselors in the advising center and with the support of my family and friends packed my bags and did a

Research Paper On College Algebra

...My topic is a topic I am sure runs through the head of at least ninety percent of all college students. Why should all college majors require you to take college algebra? The requirements for your basic college classes include college algebra. Without the proper ACT score you will be taking remedial algebra before you reach college algebra. For those who don’t know college algebra is a very difficult class. About fifty eight percent of all students who take it fail it at least once. It is especially difficult for the people who fall under the same class as me that struggle with math even before college algebra. The reason I chose this topic is because I know how extremely challenging this class is and I believe it is unfair for colleges to...

Study Habit

...solving complex problems without knowing a lot. That's why we spend the first 20 (or more) years of our lives in school. Robert Bjork and fellow PT blogger Nate Kornell have explored some of the study habits of college students in a 2007 paper in Psychonomic Bulletin & Review. Research on memory provides a number of important suggestions about the most effective ways to study. One of the most important tips is that students should study by testing themselves rather than just reading over the material. It is also important to study over a period of days rather waiting until the last minute to study. Kornell and Bjork's studies suggest that only about 2/3 of college students routinely quiz themselves, and a majority of students study only one time for upcoming exams. Of course, guidelines from memory research come from studies in idealized circumstances. Researchers bring participants (many of whom are college students) into a lab and ask them to learn material. Perhaps the recommendations drawn from these studies are not that helpful for real students dealing with real courses. To address this question, Marissa Hartwig and John Dunlosky related the study habits of college students to their grade point average (GPA) in a 2012 paper in Psychonomic Bulletin & Review. They asked students about a number of study behaviors. They also had students report their current GPA. The students with the highest GPA were more likely to study by testing...

Below are different studies that would relate and provide support to this thesis paper. Optimism is an individual difference variable that reflects the extent to which people hold generalized favorable expectancies for their future. Higher levels of optimism have been related prospectively to better subjective well-being in times of adversity or difficulty (i.e., controlling for previous well-being). Consistent with such findings, optimism has been linked to higher levels of engagement coping and lower levels of avoidance, or disengagement, coping. An investigation into the relationship between student-reported optimism and year in...

Education

...Final paper A huge issue that the United States has is the High School education system. Students have little or no preparation for life after high school compared to other nations which poses a disadvantage when trying to further their education. The United States is one of or the most powerful countries but continually flows short in the educational system. One of the major issues is the lack of the arts within the academic system. They focus today is typically how to take an exam. For example, Florida focuses so much on the FCAT that they typically focus only on English and Math. High Schools keep using this “Teaching to the Test “technique, which only teaches students how to prepare for the FCAT and this narrows the curriculum a lot. This issue leads to the question, “Is the Geography and Math knowledge of an American student as good as European student?” Every year a test is given to every student in High School. This test has basic questions about Geography and it measures the level of every student within their grade. Back in 2010 after collecting back the test from students and grading it, the National Assessment of Education Progress publicized that only a 25% of American schoolchildren passed the test and that only a 20% of 12th graders passed. This is probably one the saddest news America had to deal with when speaking of education. After the news was published to the public, Daniel Edelson, vice president for education with the National Geographic Society...
