Argument Essay College Athletes While in college being an athlete requires a great deal of additional work on top of being a student. A student makes certain sacrifices and works hard to play a sport he or she loves to play. Being able to play a sport a person may love or have a passion for while attending school is rewarding is several ways. Being an athlete in college already has a lot of advantages therefore college athletes should not be paid. Playing a sport in college is not considered a profession. Thus, the idea of paying an athlete to play while in college is illogical. First, if the athletes start getting paid they might start getting comfortable and unmotivated. Many college athletes already do not make it to the next step and become professionals. Even if it is only little money he or she might start to not want to work harder because he or she might become arrogant because he or she is getting paid. Also, a lot of the times money becomes relevant in a situation it becomes corrupt. All athletes know the choice to be an athlete comes with additional work and sacrifices. Athletes that play for a university most likely received a scholarship. Some athletes may have even received a full ride scholarship with room and board and other benefits. Certainly, having the honor to represent his or her school and getting a free education is rewarding alone. Not to mention at most universities athletes have priority when signing up for classes. Also, being an athlete at a university already opens up several other opportunities. The benefits that come with being a student athlete is fair enough compensation without getting paid. Nonetheless the purpose of attending college is to get an education. It is not about playing a sport. Paying an athlete would potentially give the idea that is about money not education. Which also brings up the question as to who would be paying all the athletes? As if college tuition at a university is not high enough this might even raise the cost to attend college. It is not fair to the students who attend college for an education and are forced to work yet still have debt even after they graduate. Another concern with paying college athletes is what athletes a school would pay and how much. It would only be fair that the classic football player would be paid as much as an athlete playing a less popular sport. Also, it would be hard to determine the compensation between a starting athlete and a sub. It would be difficult to balance out all the money going towards athletes. In addition, smaller universities might have trouble being able to afford to pay the athletes. Overall, the decision to pay athletes is an all around terrible idea. Paying athletes would cause a lot of negative outcomes for everyone. Yes, it is understandable that athletes have to be able to support themselves while attending college. Truly, there are several better alternatives rather then paying the athletes. An athlete is supposed to be an example leading through hard work. College athletes are not professionals and receive many profits without getting paid. College athletes should be grateful to be able to get an education while playing the sport he or she loves.

Why A College Athletes Should Be Paid

...on average a college athlete practices per year. A full 44.8 hours a week, more than how much time you spend at your job or at school. To help you get an idea, you work on average for about 40 hours a week and you go to school for about 35 hours a week (5 days in school week). If you take about 2,329 hours every year to play a sport or to do anything then you would want to get paid for it so you know that it could help you in the future right? Perfecting the sport might help you get to the state teams but while spending all of this time practicing and going to school, I doubt you have time for a job, getting paid for being on your college team might just help you out. However,...

College Football Players

...Should College Football Players Get Paid? Many have questioned whether college football players should be getting paid or not. Micheal Gonchar’s blog, “Should College Players Get Paid?” questions if it’s fair that the only ones not getting paid are the players. College Athletes are put in the position to work hard on the field and to also keep their academics up to par. It’s not easy balancing in being a full time student and an athlete, their commitment has to be to the sport and school. While college staffs and universities make millions and college football players only get $550 worth if they even happen to make it to the AT&T Cotton Bowl. I believe that college football players getting paid is not a good idea. Getting paid would be a plus, but I believe that if the football player has a passion for football and enjoys playing football then money shouldn’t matter. Getting paid may cause these players not to give it their all. Today football players put their hopes up to make it to the NFL and the big check that comes along with it. By them getting paid in college would just defeat the purpose of working hard to strive for that goal. Getting paid in college defeats the purpose of what college really is, people go to college for their education and to prepare themselves for jobs in the future. Paying college football players will ruin college athletics because if college football players are getting paid they will no longer dedicate their time to the sport and it would defeat...

Should College Athletes Get Paid Essay

...Should College Athletes Get Paid? College athletes should be paid for playing at the college level. This topic is interesting to me because it has been a debatable topic for a long time. College athletes deserve to get a pay check because they are still responsible to keep their grades up while playing and training for football. They work harder than the pros because they have more of a motivation to get to the higher profession than someone who is already there. They can use that money to help support their families. The coaches are getting paid but they don’t play a sport or endure in a sport. The NCAA is making a profit out of them. In all honesty, the college athletes are one of the most hardest working athletes that don’t get paid. College...

Analysis: Should College Athletes Be Paid

...Should College Athletes Be Paid a Salary? Being a college athlete is not only stressful but it is also a tiring job to maintain. Being an athlete comes with a huge amount of responsibilities, and with having responsibilities they tend to get in the way of having time to do anything else. On top of that it is harder for college athletes to maintain a job outside of school . Since most college athletes are busy maintaining their studies such as what they are majoring in and their sports, it makes it harder for them to fulfill their goals when they are student athletes. The only student athletes that have that support are students who come from a wealthy family which provide them with money to spend, however most athletes are not that fortunate, which is why colleges should pay their student athletes. College athletes should be paid not only because they are filled with dedication and determination towards school...

Summary: Should NCAA Athletes Get Paid

...Should NCAA Players Get Paid? The question of whether NCAA athletes be paid or not to play their sport or not while still in college on a free scholarship to the school but also bringing that school millions of dollars in revenue. This is a very relevant topic due to all the allegations, many of the NCAA men’s basketball teams are getting into and many FBI investigations that are in on them. The fact that they paid players to come to the school to play and bribed them with a lot more than just money for example giving them a nice car for the semester or having women strip down for the athletes, and all this just for a top high school recruit to come to their school which would later, probably have its benefits of lots of money in revenue. Contract Negotiations is a huge word because how would certain athletes get paid or how would it be distributed. Fairness is also a huge word in this protest because how would a future NFL star that is playing for the top football school in the nation and be equally paid to an alright swimmer that goes to the same school. With the...

College Basketball Players Deserve To Be Paid

...College Basketball Players Deserve To Be Paid Imagine playing the sport you love just like a professional, putting all of your focus and dedication towards it, only difference is you aren't getting paid. College basketball players do this everyday, these players go to school, go to practice and repeat with no pay. These athletes deserve to be paid because they produce millions for the N.C.A.A, however do not receive a penny back, full ride scholarships do not cover all necessities during college, and there would be decrease in athlete drop outs. One of the central ideas is that these athletes are producing millions for the National Collegiate Athletic Association and are not receiving a penny back. In the article, “ College athletes deserve to be paid “ the author expresses, “ We’re talking $11 billion for three weekends of television per year” (Wilbon). This quote shows that during March Madness, one of the biggest events in college basketball produces billions of dollars for the N.C.A.A. The organization is making an extreme amount of money from these athletes. Along with the N.C.A.A, college coaches are getting paid millions. For some kids playing a sport in college is the only way they can afford an education. The big controversial issue is should college athletes be paid. This quote from Elissa Cordrey is very meaningful to college athletics because it isn’t all about the money: If the child is playing for the sake of a scholarship, and not for love of the game, be careful, she warned. Keep your eyes wide open. It's not high school athletics. In some ways, it's really exciting. Division 1 Athletes Should Be Paid

...Division 1 athletes should be paid or not. I explain the situation to the readers that do not have much background knowledge of the topic. I go on to say that Division 1 players should be paid because they do not have much money to buy necessities. The NCAA does not allow players to get jobs due to the workload required for their particular sport. The athletes also cannot sell their items or autographed items for revenue. My next reason athletes should be paid is because they are the core of the collegiate sports. Without the players, there would be no revenue period. My next point is that the scholarships are not enough to compensate or the time the athletes put into their sport. Although the scholarship helps, it doesn’t help the players any further than paying for tuition, rooming, and books. Should Division 1 Athletes Be Paid? Imagine one having a career that takes up a majority of one’s time, requires one to do rigorous tasks, and causes one to travel to many different states. Their role in their career brings in billions of dollars to the company but one doesn’t get paid one cent. Seems like a lop-sided deal, right? Well this is the position for many Division 1 athletes all across the United States today. Today a hot topic in the collegiate world is whether Division 1 college athletes should be paid for what they do and if there are too many responsibilities put on these young adults’ backs. Some believe that the NCAA should pay these athletes for the time...

Analysis: Should Student Athletes Be Paid

...Athletic events are by far a stand out part of the college experience for many students. Sporting events bring not only the students together, but the fans and community. So, the debate over whether student athletes should be paid to pay has mixed opinions. The NCAA has firmly committed to their bylaw 12, which is spoken about in Steve Weirberg’s in Despite Criticism, NCAA Takes a Firm Stance on Professionalism. The infamous bylaw states “College athletes are not to be paid, not to cash in on their prominence, never to cross any kind of line of professionalism” (pg.681). They recieve endless benefits that the average student does not, they are able to learn from some of the best coaching staff, travel, and have the potential to turn into a...

College Athletes Should Get Paid Essay

...The topic that is going to be discussed throughout this essay is about college athletes getting paid. Throughout my years of playing sports college athletes haven’t been getting paid, but the University that the college athlete is attending is getting paid off the athlete’s performance, and even their name. No matter what University the athlete attends they should be getting paid. The huge amounts of college athletics being made off of college athletes has driven some to question if college athletes ought to be getting paid or not. Statistics show that more college athletes that are on scholarship go to bed hungry every day because the average scholarship is not enough. The average Athletic scholarship towards athletics and room is enough, but towards food and the expenses of the athletes is not enough. For being a college athlete myself, I for one can say I went to bed hungry multiple times, but since I have no money I cannot afford to go buy anything to eat from the store. So therefore, I have to wait until the next meal swipe just to be able to get something to eat. Economists say, NCAA schools can absolutely be able to afford to pay college athletes. Duke’s athletic program, for example, brought in...

...Should college athletes get paid? Many people debate if college athletes should get paid. Yes, college athletes should receive some form of financial compensation. College athletes represent their university, while their university reap all the financial gain. College athletes are asked to uphold the highest standards while representing the school, which include, but not limited to getting good grades, playing to their full potential, and to present themselves in a respectful way in the community at all times. Gaming companies are allowed to use their likeness and the student will never see one penny. Is it fair that a college athlete has worked all their life to become the best of the best in their conference and although they are the ones that put in all the hard work someone else make all the millions? Coaches push their athletes to the max to be the greatest and to win them a championship. Coaches may not care about their player’s education because their players are allowed to miss up to a quarter of all class days during their spring semester. Sometimes coaches will cheat the system to assist certain players because they know if they do not make the grades or get into any sort of trouble outside the field, their star athletes will not be able to play in the Big Games. This is an important fact because some of the mishaps players get themselves into come from their lack of having money to do certain things. Critics do not like how some athletes are getting greedy...

Why College Athletes Should Be Paid

...College Athletes: Compensation Deserved but not Given Everyone loves to watch their favorite college basketball or football players play in a game, yet college athletes do not get paid for the entertainment they provide. Athletes put in around forty hours of work a week, when including both practices and games. Colleges should pay their athletes so that they can have less stress and focus more on their performance. There are many benefits to paying college athletes, and there are many reasons why they should be paid. College athletes should be paid because they put their lives at risk for entertainment, they need money for personal needs, and they should be able to get some of the spoils of their work, instead of coaches and administrators making all the money. College athletes should be paid because they put their lives at risk for entertainment. In football there are many chances for a player to get a concussion, one...
