Many families wait for that day to come to enjoy quality time together. In the article Garrison Keillor explains how the fair is very similar to the mercer’s Italian Festival and there’s many similar things that stands out. Many families love to go to fairs to distract their mind from everything. It’s a way to take away stress. First of all Garrison Keillor explains how greasy and delicious the food is, that is one major factor that makes the Mercer festival similar to the one in the book. People wait in line just to waist their hard earned money on unhealthy greasy food, yet they enjoy every bite of it. Its one day that the family can eat anything they want because the simple fact that they can’t eat it daily. In both festivals they serve hot dogs, sausage, ice cream, fried food such as, fried snickers, French fries and fried Oreos. Second of all many families spend so much money in arcades and prize games, they either come out empty handed or with large stuffed prizes. For instance both festivals have three very similar prize games such as, basketball, ring toss, and squirt water into the clown’s mouth. People go to ATM’s to take out money to spend on games...

I would also love to have the opportunity to travel to Africa and work with some of the animals on the preservations, and with some of the locals and help their livestock. ...rhetorical situation. Defining Topic, Angle, Purpose 1. What is your chosen topic? (For example: a profile of Barb Collins, a volunteer at the local homeless shelter; a profile of “Shipwreck Days,” a citywide flea market and festival; or a profile of Burdick’s Grocery, the oldest family-owned business in town.) The annual “Martin County Fair” that recently took place in February is my topic for this week’s assignment. 2. What personal angle can you present on this topic? (Consider what is new about the topic or what unique perspective can be shared about this topic.) The Martin County Fair and most fairs in general have evolved to be more of an event for the rides. County Fairs and State Fairs were a celebration of Spring and for youths and farmers to show their “Prized” livestock. Each year the quantity of animals being shown in the fair has decreased and the fair has become more of a “Carnival”. 3. What is your purpose for writing? (What do you hope to accomplish? Why are you writing?) My purpose for writing is to inform and persuade people to take time to learn a little bit of the history behind the annual Martin County Fair. Possibly encourage young people to take an interest in raising and showing a farm animal. Analyzing your Readers You will be writing your Profile essay to your local community. Imagine you might submit the Profile to your local newspaper or have it shared in a community newsletter; the readers of those...

...A little town was unusually noisy today. There came a fair. And since very morning everybody – children, adults and elderly people- gathered in the central square. Such a fuss! The fair was a very important occasion for people. They worked hard for the whole year and took a rest during those summer days. It was greatly celebrated. The square was decorated with flags, ribbons and flowers. Music was playing loudly. Children were laughing. And artists were performing and singing. All of those noises were combined in a melody of universal holiday. A little bird was singing with the melody. She liked fairs. She liked holidays. But in that town they were so infrequent! What a pity! -Mommy! – Asked the little bird her mother that was cleaning her feathers sitting under the roof beam, - Why people don’t like the fairs? Why they have fun so rarely? -Because, my little birdie, they should work hard to deserve this holiday. -I want more holidays, mommy! - Stubbornly twittered the little bird, - Where can be more holidays? -Well, I don’t know if it is true, but one day the Old Raven told us the story about the City. There are more people, so there should be more fairs, I guess…- the mother-bird murmured thoughtfully. -The City, - the little bird repeated it dreamily. It was the day when the little bird decided to go to the City. Next morning when the mother was asleep the little bird managed to leave their cozy nest and to start its long way to the City. The bird had been...

...Is free trade also fair trade? All over college campuses around the world you can be sure to find cocoa, coffee and certain other products that are labeled “free trade,” but is fair trade really free trade? I started thinking more about it when a friend of mine coincidentally asked me the same question. After explaining what fair trade was she simply replied ‘does that really help the world, is that free trade?’ Although I answered here question with an emphatic ‘of course!.’ later on that evening I couldn’t help wondering if this was not one of the many ironies of economics and foreign policy to help developing countries that actually goes against common sense and free market systems. Coming from a developing country, I felt a tinge of regret for even thinking like this. Of course I want the best for developing countries. In countries like Ghana it is not hard to see the benefits of fair trade, the profits of farmers are increasing, more children especially girls are going to school, the premium from the fair trade organization is going into building social amenities like pure drinking water, more women are becoming empowered and are learning to take care of their own finances. But is this sustainable? Should the developing nations of Africa continue to depend on organizations such as this indefinitely? The answer to all these unfortunately is no. Governments of wealthy nations are continually pumping money into the fair trade. NGO’s fight indignantly for the rights of poor...

...The principles of Fair Trade have been around much longer than most would anticipate. In 1827 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, slave-derived goods were boycotted. Thomas M’Clintock, a member of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) founded the “Free Produce Society”. Other movements such as the Free produce movement fought against slavery by emphasizing the honest labor of free men and women (Newman, 2008). The American Free Produce Association began in 1838. This was a group of citizens from many different states who promoted their cause by seeking out non-slave alternatives. They formed distribution channels and published information including their own journal, “Non-Slaveholder”. The movement was unsuccessful because the cost of non-slave goods was higher than others they competed with. Most of these groups disbanded in the late 1840’s and mid 1850’s. Europe is given some credit for beginning the Fair Trade movement. Due to young, college radicals and a push to prove their stance of Neo-Colonialism, they began attacking the corporate world or global free market. Out of this came the ideals of fair trade. Though this was during the 1960’s, they pushed it into the forefront of Global economics. The mother of Fair Trade is a different story that began in 1946. Edna Ruth Byler was in Puerto Rico visiting a sewing class. She was a volunteer for the Mennonite Central Committee (MCC). Edna went to places of extreme poverty and that day she was taken aback by the beautiful lace...

...to promoting environmental, political, and social justice around the world, Global Exchange criticized Starbucks for profiting at the farmer’s expense by paying low prices and not buying “fair trade” beans. Not only did the activists disrupt the company’s annual meeting to the point that the convention hall security police asked the activists to leave, but they also threatened a national boycott if the company refused to sell and promote fair trade coffee. Although Smith strongly disagreed with using the shareholders meeting as a public forum, he knew there was a strong likelihood his company could face serious reprisals if it did not address the issues raised by Global Exchange. Fair trade began after World War II as religiously–affiliated, non-profit organizations purchased handmade products for resale from European producers. During the 1970s and 1980s, the concept evolved further into buying crafts from low-income, third-world producers at a “fair” price and selling those products in Western markets.1 Fair trade was an economic model based on fair labor compensation and mutual respect between producers and consumers. By the late 1990s, the fair trade movement had gained a foothold in the United States, and in early 1999, TransFair USA, a third party certification agency, launched its Fair Trade Certified coffee label. During...

...primarily organic coffee from fair traded certified coffee producers. Their vision is: “to be a leading Fair Trade business that builds on quality, professionalism and innovation for the benefit of all our stake holders. Since its inception, Just Us! had experienced healthy growth in the maritime provinces of Canada, mainly supported by its corporate values: social and environmental responsibility, sustainability, ethical practices in all the areas of the business and in all stakeholders, and product differentiation. They even opened a fair trade museum to help educate the public on the social impact and benefits of fair trade. Once roasted and packed, the coffee and other products are shipped to retail outlets, supermarket chains, health food stores, coffee shops and churches. A substantial portion of Just Us! revenues came from wholesaling to large retail stores such as supermarket chains. Their coffee is also offered in the Just Us cafes, which were meant to be a place where customers could enjoy a cup of premium fair trade coffee and gather information about fair trade. The locations were not standardized as a typical chain. A major competitor in the retail organic fair trade coffee market is Kicking Horse which also offers products that are certified organic and fair traded. Its main channels are: coffee shops, gourmet food stores, grocery chains and restaurants. The growth of fair trade product sales had prompted several major food brands to offer fair trade products, such...

...Plagiarism is a crime that can have you expelled from a school. This is the knowledge that most people attain when entering high school. They are then forced to write a research paper while not understanding the full breadth of plagiarism and what all it encompasses. Some do not even know how to insert proper citation and bibliography. This leads many children into unknowingly committing plagiarism every year. Students do not understand what the act of plagiarism is and how it impacts not only them, but other students as well. Plagiarism is “to steal and pass off (the ideas or words of another) as one's own, to use (another's production) without crediting the source, to commit literary theft, or to present as new and original an idea or product derived from an existing source.”( http:plagiarism.org / What is Plagiarism?) Students think it’s just copying or borrowing, but it’s much more serious. The doubt may come into mind of whether words or ideas can really be stolen. The U. S. Government says that in accordance with copyright laws these words and ideas are “intellectual property” (http:plagiarism.org / What is Plagiarism?) and are protected under these laws. Almost anything where it can be questioned if it’s ok to do is plagiarism. “Turning in someone else’s work, copying words from someone without giving credit, failing to put a quotation in quotation marks, giving incorrect information about the source of a quotation, changing words but copying the sentence structure...
