...College Pressures College is an institution with the purpose of preparing adults for their specific disciplines. Sometimes a college diploma is a guarantee of good jobs and a better future. Today, young adults in college often experience a lot of pressure. The journalist and professor at Yale University, William Zinsser, discusses the pressures and stress with lots of details and reasons in his persuasive and informative essay entitled College Pressures. His essay was directed to parents of college students, professors, job contractors, and college students (Zinsser, 396). Zinsser’s purpose in writing this essay was to encourage students to take risks on their college journey (Zinsser, 398). To make his essay stronger, Zinsser was effective by using persuasive rhetorical writing tools such as pathos, ethos, and logos. College allows young adults to develop necessary skills and improve abilities which they are going to need later in their chosen fields. Initially, college students often undergo a lot of stress in what is expected to be a self-enriched experience. This young generation wants to become successful students. Moreover, Zinsser works at Branford University, and in his essay, Zinsser shared, “I am privy to their hopes and fears- and also to their stereo music and their piercing cries in the dead of night” (Zinsser, 397). To make his essay more credible, Zinsser uses ethos which stands for ethical appeal (Bernanke, 2010). He uses ethos by narrating his experiences...

...Students often undergo many pressures in college, they are always facing people and trying to make many important decisions. I chose the essay, “College Pressures” by William Zinsser. Zinsser is a college professor at Yale University, he observes his students and foresees what they are experiencing in the late 1970’s. Zinsser focuses on four kinds of college pressures: economic, parental, peer, and self-induced pressure. College students are undergoing so much pressure, but there is no ‘correct’ way to get ahead, and a career does not have to be preplanned. While I agree with Zinsser that these four kinds of pressures exist, I also think that these pressures have advantages which give students the motive to succeed in the college life. Zinsser says that we live in a brutal economy, when explaining why he feels that students are under an immense amount of economic pressure. Zinsser states, “Tuition, room, and board at most private colleges now comes to at least $7,000, not counting books and fees” (Zinsser 439). Today, the average cost for private schools is around 30,000 dollars per year, quite a jump from the cost that Zinsser states. Zinsser discusses that the cost of tuition has increased so immensely that it is becoming impossible for college students to pay for, resulting in their parents being disappointed. I disagree with...

...Question 1 (442) College Pressures Zinsser’s narrative develops four kinds of pressures: economic pressure, parental pressure, peer pressure and self-induced pressure. William Zinsser’s four kinds of pressure described for the 1970s are the same kinds of pressures that troubled students face today. In todays brutal economy students are faced to pay outrageous tuition, room and board, this is not including the high-ticket price on books. Tuition covers more than half of what it takes to educate a young student. Today it is not unusual for students, even if they work part time, to accrue loans after four years loans, that one must repay after within one year after graduation (439). Students want an outline they can follow point by...

...READERS RESPONSE / COLLEGE PRESSURES You truly feel the weight on your shoulders, just reading William Zinsser, “COLLEGE PRESSURES”. It’s the feeling of entrapment or the phobia of everything closing in on you with life. I know what it felt like, but at my age I saw outside the box. Between the ages of 17 and 21 starting College you feel the pressure. Everyone is on a path to righteousness, at any age in life. We all want to better ourselves to prove to our elders we can make it better, but what is the path? We question ourselves everyday and on times when feel content in life. It’s sad to see fresh students out of High school looking at Colleges. They just got done school and they haven’t even hit their 21st birthday yet, many problems arise from...

...predominate in their sport? Being able to excel is what makes you shine to the world. Watching your favorite player succeed is what makes people enjoy sports as much as they do. The more they succeed the bigger the fan base gets as more popular the sport gets. As Cousins said “No one doubts that many people enjoy prize fighting and will miss it if it should be thrown out. And that is precisely the point.” The pressure to excel for athletes in high school, college and professional leagues is much greater due to many factors relating to the sport. High standards set by coaches and parents is one of the main causes of the pressure athletes feel at a young age. While on a varsity team in high school...

...Failing does not mean Unsatisfactory Failing is a word that many people would like to believe is not in their vocabulary. Failing in life is sometimes necessary in order to get things done the right way. As William Zinger says in his essay “College Pressures”, “What I wish for all students is some release from the clammy grip of the future. I wish them a chance to savor each segment of their education as an experience in itself and not as a grim preparation for the next step. I wish them the right to experiment, to trip and fall, to learn that defeat is as instructive as victory and is not the end of the world.” I can relate personally to what William Zinger is saying because sometimes I wish I could just fail at things in order to think about the things that I would really...

...March 2014 Facing Peer Pressure Peer pressure is basically pressure from peers to do something. A student can be pressured into doing something by his or her peers, family or even by students they don’t even know. College students are faced with this every day. It is harder for them because they no longer have mom or dad to wake them up in the morning for class, and to tell them what the right or wrong voice is in a difficult situation. There are many things college students are pressured into in the work today, like pressure to do well in school, to go out, or to develop better studying habits. Although peers can have an effect on the college experience, parents can as well. Parents almost always pressure their children to do well in college. Some already have a mindset on what kind of grades they want their children to have. One way a parent could pressure their child to do well in college is, they may bribe them with a special gift at the end of the semester. Another way is, a parent just might have a high expectation and the child may feel pressured to meet that expectation. Parents pressuring their children can be very good for them. It is good for them because they want to show their family how smart they are, and that they can do it. When a person is pressured to do well, it makes him or her feel like someone cares about his or her future. By having a caring person pressure him or her, they want to succeed and make them happy. Although college is about getting an education...

...An Ethical Dilemma (Chapter 6) Lael Mathews has to decide between three different people to promote to manager. One is a thirty-four year old African American female, one is a fifty-seven year old Caucasian man, and the third one is a twenty-seven year old Asian American. They all have three different situations and problems of their own. Lael Mathews know each ones background which makes it even harder to make a decision as to which one deserves and will best fit the position. Liz is the thirty four year old African American who is divorced, has one child, been in the company four years, has a high energy level, and graduated in the lower half of her college class. Roy is the fifty seven year old Caucasian who is married, has three children, been with the company twenty years, energy level is average to low, and graduated in the top half of his class. And lastly Quang is the twenty-seven year old Asian American who is single, no kids, been with the company three years, works sixty hours a week, and graduated top three percent of her class. Advantages and Disadvantages of each Candidate Liz only really has maybe two advantages and that would be that if she was chosen she would be the first African American female to manager at that level and she has a high energy level meaning she is willing to put forth the effort. Now her disadvantages would be her academic credentials, her job experience, and the fact that her child has had many medical issues that could cause...

...Jonathan Russell Comp 1112-06 Dr. Washington Research Paper Teen Suicide What possible circumstances could ever lead a teen or college student to the point where they want to end their own life? In the year 2004 it is estimated that roughly 1,600 teens between the ages of fifteen and nineteen will end their own lives (Hosansky). In the same study, it is also stated one in every five high school students consider killing themselves. It is sad to think anything could push these young people to that point. What causes them to do such a thing? Is it pressure from parents, bullying, experimenting with alcohol, or something as simple as feeling alone? Teens today have pressure coming from everywhere, whether it be from parents, coaches, or even peer pressure from friends. There is not one leading cause to teen suicide, but the pressure put on teens is one major component. Teens feel like they cannot handle the pressures of everyday life and when something goes wrong they turn to the “easy way out” and end their lives. It is sad to think they feel that death is the only way out. One way that teens in fact feel pressure is from people they consider their friends. Today it is so easy for teens to communicate without actually seeing one another face to face. Due to ease that technology presents, it is for teens to talk without actually seeing each other; cyber bullying has become more and more of a problem. In a story written by a young boy’s parents, they explain...

...If he or she tells the applicant, you will get paid $9 per hour to work crappy hours, it will be very hard to get hard working people in that job because they will want to go and get a job that appeals to their personal needs. That supervisor then will hire people who are desperate and most-likely have very little work experience. I do not feel that all the blame should be placed on the fact that the supervisor did mislead Juan however, as I know very well having a part-time job and going to school full time is a very difficult thing to do. Students have tremendous pressure on themselves to succeed in college, and that pressure alone is sometimes overwhelming. When you have to add a job into that mix, a life filled with stress is a daily occurrence. Juan not understanding that the pressure that would come with that is something that everyone just has to learn. There have been several times that the pressures I have felt from work and school have built up so high that I feel like I might burst, but when you hit those spots you need to stay positive, Juan didn’t do that. So with that, it is a mix of him being lied to, but also him underestimating that stresses that are included with what he will have to...

...For Girls. It’s Be Yourself, and Be Perfect, Too: Pressure on Young Women For young women today there seems to be enormous pressure to be beyond perfect. Why as a society do we place these kinds of pressures on our children? A good example is the story “For Girls, It’s Be Yourself, and Be Perfect, Too” by Sara Rimer. It focuses on two amazing teen girls Esther and Colby who have to face many issues that many young women today have to confront now as well as the stress it entails. Esther and Colby learn right from the start that they have to be perfect during every waking hour and not waste anytime. The girl’s lives are influenced by their parent’s desires and the opinions of their peers. They don’t even think of themselves. Today’s amazing girls are facing pressure from their parents, as well as images they see on T.V., in magazines, as well as everywhere they look. Society pressures young women to be smart, sexy, and athletic. Sara Rimer writes; “If you are free to be everything, you are also expected to be everything” (page 2). At one time young women were viewed as the lesser sex; and were expected to become obedient wives and good mothers. They weren’t expected to go to or even complete their schooling. It was viewed as a waste of time. As time passed women started to become able to receive an education, vote, and have a job outside of the home. Society then started expecting more out of young women. The young women today have to become the amazing girl’s...

... speech tells a different story. Lessing states that we “are now in possession of a great deal of hard information about ourselves, but we do not use it to improve our institutions and therefore our lives (Lessing).” Lessing spoke in 1985 about Western humans and how we perceive ourselves. She believes that Westerners are very educated and have a very high sense of self. Westerners go through life rarely questioning what others tell us, instead just accepting it as absolute truth. Americans especially are very prone to social pressures and feel significant pressure to conform. In the age of Facebook and Twitter, many adolescents feel an enormous amount of pressure from friends and social media about what they should look like, what they should be wearing, what music they should be listening to. Adults are no exception. Adults are pressured all through their lives that they should go to college, get married, and have children. Even if this is not something an individual wishes for themselves, they will more than likely conform because they want to appease their friends or their families, or they simply feel that society expected that of them. Lessing points out that while in a group setting, most individuals will quickly cast aside their individuality to go along with the crowd if their opinions are different than that of the majority. Westerners feel...

...[pic] |College of Engineering and Computer Science Mechanical Engineering Department Mechanical Engineering 370 Thermodynamics | | | |Fall 2010 Course Number: 14319 Instructor: Larry Caretto | Unit Two Homework Solutions, September 9, 2010 1 A frictionless piston-cylinder device initially contains 200 L of saturated liquid refrigerant-134a. The piston is free to move, and its mass is such that it maintains a pressure of 900 kPa on the refrigerant. The refrigerant is now heated until its temperature rises to 70oC. Calculate the work done during this process. The freely-moving piston can be interpreted as giving a constant pressure process such that P1 = P2 = P = 900 kPa. For a constant pressure process, the concept that the work is the area under the path is particularly simple. That area is a rectangle whose area is P (V2 – V1). We know that P is 900 kPa, and the initial volume is 200 L = 0.2 m3, but we have to find the final volume. Because this is a constant pressure process, the final pressure equals the initial pressure of 900 kPa (0.9 MPa) and we are given that the final state has a temperature of 70oC. From the superheat tables for refrigerant-134a in Table A-13 on page 930, we find that the specific volume at this temperature and pressure is 0.027413 m3/kg. In order to find the volume (V in m3 as opposed to the specific volume, v, from the property tables in m3/kg), we have...
