For the past decades, the growing debate in western countries is whether college should be free for all American citizens. Many believe college should be free because this will reduce the amount of people in student debts and will benefit the economy due to the increased numbers of educated citizens. Those against the idea of free college suspect that if it is free than any aimless teenager would attend and would never understand the true importance an education has on one's life. College should not be free because spending government money on free education will cause a decrease in other important spendings and the value of a college degree would dwindle. Free college will not create new jobs, will create an abundance of graduates applying

Why Do Colleges Should Be Free

...When it comes to the topic of college tuition, most of us will readily agree that we should pay nothing. Where this agreement usually ends, however, is on the question of taxpayers. Whereas some are convinced that it should be free, others maintain that it should not. Many Americans tend to believe that receiving a free higher education could help boost the economy by having more college graduates that would create more jobs opportunities. In a recent article by International Business Times, Bernie Sanders, a presidential candidate senator, proposes the elimination of four-year college tuition. To introduce The College for All Act Bernie Sanders says, “[It] would give four years of tuition-free education to students at public colleges and universities.” It also argues...

Argumentative Essay: Should Community College Be Free?

...Right now, there’s a big debate whether or not community college should be free. Some say it should under certain requirements, some say it shouldn't no matter what. It's believed that if college is free, it can help give people a boost on striving for a degree. It's hoped that more people enroll to college to increase the amount of people with degrees. I think the whole situation is pretty interesting, therefore I believe that community college shouldn’t be free because there's already a way in which someone doesn't have to pay for tuition, the pell grants basically covers your tuition and more, and there’s going to be a lot of competition because students varying from low income to upper & middle class. Making college free sounds like a good idea, who wouldn't want to go to college and pay nothing? The idea can benefit a lot of people, but there's no need for it to be free because according to Felipe Bezerra, a student at Rio Hondo College, “about half of the state's community college students qualify for those waivers.” It wouldn't really make a difference to many students because a lot of them are going to have their tuition covered by fee waivers. They're going to realize that they went through some hassle to not pay for tuition, when at the end, it ended up being...

Argumentative Essay: Should Community College Be Free?

...Community college should not be free because there's a higher chance that students will drop out, students with a higher GPA will apply to community college leaving the average students without a spot, and it wouldn’t be fair for those students who are going to a four year college and have to pay when at community college it is free. Community college is already cheap and it gives low income families an opportunity to attend college. It already offers a free year and it is not fair for those who want to get a real college life experience. Community college is different from a four year college because it is cheaper and is only for two years. When speaking about cheaper, it is cheaper by hundreds of dollars. In the article “Should community college be free?” written by Joanne Jacobs published on February 23, 2015 on US News and World Report claims that “community college tuition already is free...

Should College Tuition Be Free for All Students?

...Should College Tuition be Free for all Students? I believe that most students today struggle to pay for college. Unless you are a 4.0 grade point average student with a complete scholarship to the university of your liking, you are subject to the same condition as the majority of college students that struggle to pay the tuition for a four year school or attend community college to transfer after two years. Despite the fact that I attend community college and call myself “financially stable” for the moment, but even with my mother’s income and with what I make myself, I am still not able to completely finance my way through college. I consider myself to be blessed as that does not even compare to what a student at a four year university has to pay for tuition; paying for tuition becomes even more burdensome if you are attending an out of state school or private university. Although financial aid tries to help students with their tuition with no expectation of being paid back, that money is generally insufficient in covering the majority of the debt. As a result, a “financially stable,” or lower status would still mean that you undertake debt that cannot be paid back in full for years to come. With that fact in mind, should college tuition be free for all students? In order to fully answer this question, I began exploring different articles that offered different opinions as to what should be done to resolve this issue. “Free College, We can afford it” by Katrina vanden...

Argumentative Essay: Should We Get College Free?

...Going to college is one of the gateways to a better life. However, the tuition for college is immensely higher than the average American's income. This leads many to not go after their dreams. On the other hand, the young adults that do go to college end up in an enormous amount of debt. Bernie Sanders, a Democratic presidential candidate, advocates that colleges should be free for everyone. This would theoretically push a lot of young adults into going to college. Although this proposal sounds perfect there are some hindrances to this. Hence, why lawmakers should not make college free of charge since there is not enough money to fund this and there are ways in which the government can help young adults into college. To begin with, the legislators shouldn’t make college tuition free because the government cannot afford the amount of money it would cost. America spends a lot of money on many goods, military and other things; that making college free is not an option. The government in its current state is in debt, and this proposal would push America into a bigger amount of debt. The proposal would “cost the...

The Benefits Of Free Community College

...College is a big topic of discussion for me now that I am almost halfway through my senior year of high school. There have been recent debates about whether college tuition should be free or not. I realized that it would be better to pay for schooling on my own. I have looked at the community college price compared to prices at universities. I would much rather go to a community college especially because I’m not sure what I want to get into. Many of my classmates would probably say that free college sounds like a wonderful idea, while others don’t really think so. Some college graduates might have already paid off their own student loans or started paying them off. Why should others have to worry about paying more tax money for other people...

Free Speech Should Be Allowed On Campus

...Free speech should be allowed on campus. Free speech is meant to be free and should not be limited to certain areas. Our first amendment rights tell us that we have free speech, along with some other freedoms, and that should mean free not limited to certain areas. The people on campus should have the right to say what they want and not fear getting in trouble for it. These people should have the same rights as if they were not on campus, but that does not seem like how it is. The schools are there to help the students and to teach them better and newer things in life. Colleges are not there to restrict your rights, they are there to help you learn and to help you get a career after you graduate. They do have free speech on most campuses, but they have designated it to certain zones. These zones are a good idea, but it is our first amendment right to have the freedom of speech and they are slowly taking that away from us on campus. The administrative forces have been trying to punish these people that are not following by their rules. These colleges are trying to limit the free speech of students in their schools. These people try to take a stand with peaceful protests, but they just end up getting...
