Research: Affirmative Action. Do you feel that affirmative action has a place in today's society? Do you support or oppose its role in today's politics and our lives? Why?

Affirmative action is a term most Americans are familiar with, but a term that is not always well understood. To clarify, as defined in Politics in America by Thomas Dye, affirmative action is any government or private program designed to help offset the effects of “past unequal treatment of minorities and/or women by giving members of these groups preferential treatment in admissions, hiring, promotions, or other aspects of life” (Dye, 2009, p. 551). Over time, affirmative action has resulted in an array of policies or programs specifically designed with the intention to enhance employment and business opportunities, or educational programs for groups, such as ethnic or racial minorities, as well as women, who all, as a group, have suffered discrimination. However, the approach in which these policies or programs are employed, the forms of action they entail, and the far-reaching repercussions they convey for our society may deviate from one specific program to another.
Since its founding, the belief in human equality has guided the American republic. Of the truths held to be self-evident in the Declaration of Independence, the very first and foremost is that “all men are created equal.” This certainty is deep-seated as we recognize intuitively the equality of individuals validates universal involvement in government. The recognized equality of its citizens is the base, the philosophical foundation of our democracy in America. Wait a minute. What did I just say? “The recognized equality of its citizens is the base, the philosophical foundation of our democracy in America.” If this is true, then how can something as evil as the exploitation of

...College offers students many fields of study, after they become college student, they can choose what they want to learn. But colleges requires students to select classes not inside of their major fields but also outside. As a college student, I want to be a nurse in future. I remember when I went for my advising, the adviser told me I had to do my pre requisite pass my TEASE test before I can enter the nursing program. I asked her the reason why I had to take courses that do not pertain to the course am majoring in. I was confused about what she was trying to tell me. The adviser then explained the reason why I had to do all this course. Some of the reason she said was for student to be able to express them self-better, for them to be creative and lastly to be a divergent and critical thinker. I later went to a seminar that explained the reason why student should take course that is not my major. I strongly agree that college should require every students to take classes that is not that is not the major and also should be graded pass/fail. This is the reason why; first of all, studying other courses gives students chances to make friends with other students in different major fields. In my field my faculty requires every students to take at least two years of pre requisites. I choose to study nursing, am making a lot of good friends while during my pre requisites I meet students from all fields which gives my some ideas on other fields. The second to support my claim is...

Many college students have to battle with work, school, and even children at home. It may seem like it isn’t a lot to deal with but it can be very stressful. Increased Responsibility and Independence During college change is a very big factor in a freshman’s life. Deal with change for many people can be very difficult. For many people leaving home and going to college is a sign that they are now on their own. They are now adults and have to make decisions for themselves to better their future. ...the past couple of years. Many college students spend late nights binging on their favorite television shows. There has not been much research done, on the effects that Netflix has on students, specifically those in college. Although, there have been several studies done on the effects media has on secondary students, as well as college students. Our study will try to determine whether watching Netflix while doing schoolwork will effect the efficiency, and accuracy of the task given to them. In order to get a better understanding of what we might expect from our study, we chose to analyze five studies that discuss media and technology in regards to secondary and college students. College Students and Allowance

...Kayla Talley Bridget Walsh English 1011 6 February 2014 College Student Should Not Have to Fund Their School Expenses After high school, did you ever fear the words, “part-time job?” I think majority of graduates do; however, people like me, and many others work their life away before even beginning high school. In the article, “College and Allowance,” Silverman explains, “I know there is an allowance in my future when I head to college in a couple of years.” (Silverman 261) Silverman received an allowance because her brother, who attends Duke, did also. Although many college students today expect handouts from their parents, many of us are not as privileged to receive that same treatment, and with that comes self-responsibility. I know I could have been a better scholar had I not had two steady jobs and tried to be a “social butterfly” as well. Jobs can consume much of a student’s time when they allow it to and can highly affect your grades in the negative direction. From my person experience, students shouldn’t have to put themselves through school because being employed hinders academic performance. If you are going to make a commitment to be a student, you should push that priority to the top of the totem pole. As a previous college student, a full-time mother and employee, I know being a student is definitely a challenge. In my previous experience, I found myself putting my job in front of my studies and not to mention that my home-life was a hindering factor as...

Confession of a College Student

...Confession of a college student Dwanna Dorsey GEN/195 June 29, 2011 Regina Ford I came into this world on the 14th day of March, in the island of the Philippines. My parents named me Dwanna, which is unique and throughout the years, it fits my personality. When I turned 12, my mother moved my two sisters and me to Carson City, Nevada. The state is beautiful in many ways; outdoor activities are widely available, wildlife is vast, individuals here are welcoming and pleasant. Ever since I was little my mother always said, “Everything happens for a reason,” it was until my mother passed that I understood what she meant. I came to realize life is short. Without any warnings, my life changed. When my beloved son had arrived, I was ecstatic. My family gathered and my sisters asked, “Now that your son is born. What are your plans?” As a result, I read many reference books about how to accomplish goals to ease some thoughts and questioned myself “what am I going to show and tell my son about what I have accomplished in life?” Therefore, I decided to attain a degree in business and accounting. This would help me acquire a good paying job as a public accountant. Making a commitment at this stage of my life, I am afraid that I am incapable to keep up with the extra work and eventually fail. My husband and I discussed the option of not going back to school. However, he has inspired me to become a better person and displayed how easy it is to succeed...

Student at College

...Black students are suspended and expelled at three times the rate of white students. Black students are more than four times as likely as white students - and Latino students are twice as likely - to attend schools where one out of every five teachers does not meet all state teaching requirements. One of the striking statistics to emerge from the data, based on information collected during the 2011-12 academic year, was that even as early as preschool, black students face harsher discipline than other students. In high school, the study found that while more than 70 percent of white students attend schools that offer a full range of math and science courses - including algebra, biology, calculus, chemistry, geometry and physics - just over half of all black students have access to those courses. "We want to have a situation in which students of color - and every student - has the opportunity and access that will get them into any kind of STEM career that takes their fancy," said Claus von Zastrow, director of research for Change the Equation, a nonprofit that advocates improved science, technology, engineering and math education, or STEM, in the United States. The Education Department's report found that black, Latino, American Indian and Native Alaskan students are three times as likely as white students to attend schools with higher concentrations of first-year teachers. In nearly a quarter of school districts with at least two high schools, the teacher salary gap between high...

Student Suicide In College

...As awareness for suicide among college aged students rose, this research paper aimed to find the truth behind the matter. Collecting from many sources, he found varying views. Some proved that suicide is more likely when comparing the population as a whole to a single campus. Other times, the researchers believe that campuses skew their numbers by not reporting suicides of students off campus. However, one point seems to be more supported than the rest and this is that young adults who drop out of college are much more likely to commit suicide than those in college. Even though there is no clear evidence whether more suicides are being attempted or completed at colleges, it is know that the number of students enrolling in college with some form of psychiatric problems like depression and anxiety is on the rise, which can lead to higher suicide rates. Silverman, M. M., MD, Meyer, P. M., Sloane, F., Madeleine, M., & Pratt, D. M. (1997). The big ten student suicide study: A 10-year study of suicides on...

Problems College Students Face

...6 Professor Hill 28 November 2012 Four Major Problems Facing College Students Today and Possible Resolutions Going off to college is probably one of the best times in a teenager’s life. Right out high school teenagers are anxiously awaiting the arrival of college “move-in” day or the first day of school. They may look at it as a great opportunity to gain further knowledge about a particular study or better yet a way to finally escape the rules and regulations of their parents. College is supposed to be an educational, yet fun experience, a time for meeting new people, exploring opportunities, joining organizations, but most of all a time to be responsible. Little do teenagers know college comes with problems, some minor and some major. The most common major problems college students face are problems with partying, relationships, choosing a major, and money. Partying in itself really is not a problem (Gates). Parties are thrown so that the students can have a good time (Gates). However, today, many parties have the potential to cause problems (Gates). At numerous parties drinking and smoking is the life of the party (Gates). Drinking alcohol can lead to drunkenness, which can possibly end up as a deadly situation (Gates). Partying irresponsibly is one the causes of a college student’s poor academic performance (Academic Performance). Of course, along with partying comes drinking and smoking. Students tend to act out when away from their parents. Now that they are on...

Raising a Successful College Student

...Raising a Successful College Student Carol Woods GEN/200 In order to be a successful college student personal responsibility must be learned at an early age. Children must learn personal responsibility, time management skills, and family values when they are young. If children develop a strong responsibility foundation they will develop into a successful college student. Personal responsibility is something that is taught to you throughout your childhood and developed throughout your adult life. A child is taught family values daily from the time they begin to walk. Parents begin to pass on their own values system and this is what a person’s responsibility foundation is built on. In order for a student to be successful in their college career they must already have been taught personal responsibility throughout their childhood. Children should be given household chores at a very young age, like picking up their toys, making their beds, and even feeding the family pet, at this age they are exposed to the family values at its core. Children begin to realize what responsibility is through these chores. Experts believe that any type of household responsibilities, are important for kids (Dunnewind, 2004). When they develop into adolescence they should be given more responsibility. School work becomes a priority, social groups draw their interest and now they begin to develop their time management skills. Learning how to navigate between class assignments...

While several studies show that sports participation causes children to do worse in school then those that are not participating in sports, it is unclear if this affiliation is a result of negative academics from the child, or due to the impact of the sports on the kids minds and ability to participate in school. The general focus of this study is on how athletes and non-athlete’s grade are during the school year. The study will examine the effects of sports participation on many different measures of their academic performance. Participants (N-40) will be sent an online...

Student Loans For College

...In my opinion going to college you cannot get through all of your school without a single student loan. Even some 2 year colleges have very high tuition rates and expenses. Especially in 4 year schools that are just the start to the next 4 or 5 years students can be extremely overwhelmed with the cost. There are just too many expenses and tuition is getting more and more expensive every year. Also saving is very important if you plan on paying for all of your college and this can be very hard for highschool kids. I believe that a student may be able to get through with little financial support but i do not believe that you can get through it without any. The tuition rates for college today are growing and so are the other expenses. The average tuition rate for college students is $9,139. The lowest being a 2 year in state school would be $3,347 and the highest being a private 4-year school at $32,231. This is only tuition, which does not include housing, books, food, utilities, fun money, and...
