...Poor Writing Skills In the Workforce In today’s society texting, e-mails, twitter, facebook, and many other forms of communication have evolved. Throughout these technological advances come many different forms of communication. Since the evolution of texting, people have evolved to say things faster and in less wording to make their point get across. But over the last several years, the workforce has taken these texting acronyms and lingos to their jobs and it’s not going well. Because of this, people can’t communicate efficiently or affectively and companies are noticing. What’s worse is that it seems to get worse and worse and people are becoming very lazy and illiterate about proper English. If this keeps up, companies will suffer from poor communication and we could see a change in how English is perceived today. To begin, the whole era of texting in acronyms and smile faces and extra symbols started with teens. Always in a hurry to say what’s on their mind, teens started inventing faster ways to communicate to one another. At first it was a great idea if you needed to send a quick message to your sibling or friend. But soon it evolved into that’s how teens started writing their papers and became more illiterate. Now as these young generations are hitting the workforce, companies aren’t taking a liking to it. Because the older generation didn’t grow up texting all day they don’t understand what some of the acronyms mean. It also makes it very hard to read when words are...

...those writing contests your English teachers told you all about? Oh, wait...those weren’t introduced at the middle school level, were they? Well, writing contests can be a great way to share writing, and, like many others at Saint Joseph High, perhaps something can be won. See, at St. Joe last year, we broke a record. Not surprising, right? The number of student-won Scholastic Writing Awards was at an all-time high. With a total of 73 individual awards and 4 senior portfolio awards--38 Honorable Mentions, 33 Silver Keys, and 4 Gold Keys--St. Joe has surpassed itself yet again. “Last year, I know that we could not fit the names [of the Scholastic award winners] on one poster, and previously we had been able to do that.” said Mrs. Bean Klusendorf, the teacher of two College Writing classes and both of the Honors English 9 classes, “So yes, I’m quite certain that we had the most that we’ve ever had at St. Joe.”...

...Coming into my freshman year of college writing, I did not know what to expect. I was never a terrible writer, but knew I could always improve. College writing has helped me improve in many ways, and has let me identify my weaknesses and strong points as a writer. As the course went on, with the three different writing prompts we were assigned, I saw myself improving each time. Each person learns at their own pace and at their own time. For me, It took me a while but by the last essay, I feel more confident as a writer. I noticed my writing skills improving a lot by the third essay. I knew how to set up a thesis, subclaims and evidence with little to no trouble. I enjoyed writing the third essay because it was on a controversy. I decided...

...Writing an Essay: The College Way One of the many tasks expected of college students is to know how to write well organized and developed essays. Writing an essay is not simply going about a certain topic. There are particular rules a student must apply when writing in order to submit an acceptable essay, which if they are not met, the student may face strict consequences that could even lead to expulsion. Students will learn the different techniques of writing a professional essay, like the differences between quoting, paraphrasing and summarizing. In an essay, the student must use the correct types of citation required and know the importance of citing sources properly and the consequences of citing improperly. Many of the courses at the college level require students to write an essay at one point or another. In the process of writing these essays, students will often use quotations to reinforce the argument or position presented in the essay. Quotations must be worded exactly as extracted from its source, and credit must always be given where it’s due. However, sometimes students may use paraphrasing as another way to support an idea. Paraphrasing is basically taking the information from a chosen source and expressing it in one’s own words instead of just repeating it word by word. On another note, summarizing will also be used whilst writing an essay. Instead of including an entire article to back up one’s position, a student can summarize that article by stating the most...

...College level writing to many is a walk in the park on a nice spring day. On the other hand, to me it is a walk in the snow on a slippery slope. As I write; my critical thinking and writing skills are put to the test to deliver the out most "perfect" essay. However; For whatever reason, I get stuck and my thoughts don't make sense. My words and vocabulary don't come together smoothly as you will see in someone's work. Furthermore, college level writing is known to require time, perfect grammar and understanding of your topic. That is why without these essential skills one will end up with a poor unsubstantial essay. Slow and steady is the way to approach college level writing in my opinion. In order to create a great essay, I need time to explore my options. For example, having an idea of the style and approach I will like to take towards the writing I will be working on. Also creating a plan that will help me with putting time a side for my project so that as soon as I get my topic I can take time on my brainstorming. In my case I get off school before noon. I go straight to the...

...Strategies for Effective College Level Writing COLL 100 AMU/APUS Strategies for Effective College Level Writing Included are five good strategies for effective college level writing. According to Carter (2008), "College Students are held to a much higher standard than high school students, even those who are enrolled in an AP course." To help the student write at a higher standard, the student needs to plan for the assignment, avoid writers block, talk about their ideas for the assignment, proofread and revise their assignment, and learn from their mistakes. Planning the student's assignment is a good strategy for effective college level. According to McCutchen (2011), "Planning was subsumed under the broader label reflection, which encompasses problem solving (including planning), decision making, and inferencing." (p. 52). Therefore planning is a critical aspect for effective college level writing. To have a good plan, the student needs to understand the assignment. According to Riedinger (n.d.)"Don not assume that every teacher expects the same type of writing or research or that every assignment, even from the same teacher, will be the same." According to Carter (2008), "Understanding the purpose of an assignment is vital, particularly at the college level where professors will assign a broader range of paper styles." The student needs to read the instructions more than once, go back, and read them throughout the assignment. Getting all the...

...Throughout this writing process i have improved as a writer because using a different writing process that im not use to has help me change the way i think about college writing. It has also change the way i write and has helped me learn more about myself as a writer. I believe that through the writing process i have changed the way I think about college writing. I didn't think it would be much different than high school writing but throughout this process i have realized that the process that is involved for college writing is much more complex. For example when I write an essay for my english classes in high school all that is required is a rough draft and a final draft and sometimes you need to have it peer edited before submitting it. Differently during the writing process for a college essay I had to have 2 rough drafts revised and edited and a final draft to meet the requirements. Another big difference in the writing process is the we had to turn in a annotated bibliography that I had never been required to turn in , in any of my high school writing classes. Going through the writing process it has changed the way i see college writing...

...was stronger in some aspects of my academic abilities than others, writing, not being one of those strengths. Due to past high school experiences confidence in my writing abilities dwindled as a result of four years of poor mentoring. Developing a strong passion for the sciences and acquiring an acute fear of any English reading or writing course. My fight with comma confusion and run on sentences stunted my excitement to be enrolled in a purely writing and comprehension focused course. Within the first few weeks we were introduced to an assignment that focused on defining a word or phrase, I chose to define the word “perfection”. Unfortunately, sending myself into a self-loathing downward spiral due to the unknown degree of difficulty of this word. I struggled with the direction I wanted to go with this paper, then ran into the time engulfing task of trying to capture the ideas that I had accumulated in my head into four pages. The job of capturing these ideas and organizing them into a comprehendible paper was no easy feat, battling between my free writing thoughts and my high school English essay rules, this took me 5 days, 4 long nights, and many calls for help to...

...Is there a special way to read? One may think reading is as simple as opening the book, skimming the words once, and then you're done. However, that's not the case and reading requires a sufficient amount of diligence. In college you don't merely read, but you also analyze, understand, remember, and respond to the writing. Chapter 3 of Successful College Writing expands on this topic and offers insight on the actions that accompany reading and responding to the text. College introduces difficult literary assignments, (such as informative essays and essays meant for academic audiences) and unlike high school, you won't receive as much support in deciphering the text. This means you need to acquire sustainable skills and become an active reader. Being an active reader requires for you to take action before, while, and after you read. Before you read you need to preview the selection and form questions based on what you have previewed. Your preview should include the title, introduction, headings, photos, conclusions and several other aspects. As soon as you finish previewing the selection, write questions on sections you didn't quite understand or you want to know more about. This can help guide your reading so you can better comprehend it....

...The irony is that it’s everywhere, yet we can’t see ‘it’. We don’t know about its birth year or where ‘it’ exactly started. ‘It’ has had many definitions that have evolved from the ancient times to now. Aristotle defined ‘it’ as ‘the science of quantity’. But, as people dug deeper into ‘it’, they learnt new things and ‘it’ became more abstract. So people gave ‘it’ more logical and philosophical definitions. Bertrand Russell, a British mathematician, defined ‘it’ as ‘symbolic logic’. Walter Sawyer, another mathematician, defined ‘it’ as ‘the classification and study of all possible patterns’. Today, the encyclopedia defines ‘it’ as ‘the science of structure, order, and relation that has evolved from elemental practices of counting, measuring, and describing the shapes of objects’. This is the world of Mathematics. Where did it come from? Is it a human creation or is it a feature of the universe? Mathematics is undoubtedly one of the most important subjects known to man. It is artistic, exhaustive and sometimes even beautiful. But where did it come from? As we know, every science needs mathematics. Physics needs mathematics, chemistry needs mathematics, rocket science involves mathematics and so does the universal system of money. However, mathematics is the study of mathematics, which means that unlike the other sciences, it lacks an empirical component. One cannot see math happening. People might argue saying that if you had one person and if you cloned that person, you would...

...REMEMBER TO CHANGE EVERY FIVE WORDS. SHIIIIIT AID IS GOOD TO GO!!!! preparing Students for Success in College and the Workforce “We will end what has become a race to the bottom in our schools and instead spur a race to the top by encouraging better standards and assessments… And I'm calling on our nation's governors and state education chiefs to develop standards and assessments that don't simply measure whether students can fill in a bubble on a test, but whether they possess 21st century skills like problem-solving and critical thinking and entrepreneurship and creativity. That is what we'll help them do later this year -- when we finally make No Child Left Behind live up to its name by ensuring not only that teachers and principals get the funding that they need, but that the money is tied to results.” President Barack Obama Remarks to the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce March 10, 2009 Last year, the President challenged states to develop standards and assessments that will help America’s children rise to the challenge of graduating from high school prepared for college and the workplace. Today, the President applauds Governors for their efforts to work together in a state-led consortium – managed by the National Governors Association (NGA) and the Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) – to develop and implement new reading and math standards that build toward college- and career-readiness. With many states well positioned to adopt these standards, the Governors initiative...

Studying all hours of the night, writing papers, and reaching her goals in life inspired me to pursue my goals of attaining a college degree. I was fascinated with reading my mother’s papers and going to her college campus. I always wondered what college would be like. It is a life long dream for me to become a journalist and an inspiring actress, who will change the lives of people through writing, broadcasting and performing. The purpose of attending college is to get an education and discover whom you are. In order to prepare for college, I challenged myself in high school...
