The word violence extends well beyond the typical thought of gore and anger. Violence can be broken down into sectors such as verbal, indirect, physical and emotional. For instance, the dehumanization of enemies in war. Enemies are given slanderous names, emotionally are affected by the deaths that they see, physically by the enemies that they kill and indirectly combatants will often pillage towns for food and shelter when needed. Once somebody returns from war, all of these factors affect their views on war, instead of just the act of killing. He stated that “the survival of the fittest” leads to the best adapted individuals to excel in their certain niche. This is a direct correlation to the four questions for what it means to be human and to live a life of meaning and purpose. Humans are a set of complex individuals who with an intelligent brain are able to fight over their thoughts and beliefs, which leads to violent actions. The main purpose for a human is to pass on their genes through babies, and fight for the resources against any resistance. This conveys light to scientific disciplines that look into the mindset of humans to understand who “The Other” is. This colloquium is quite similar to the topic in class today about the “tragedy of the commons.” Violence often occurs because humans are fighting for a limited amount of resources. Though it may be construed through verbal or physical means, humans often feel the need to put down others for their own benefit. Once this is established, the victim is at a disadvantage because the aggressor is able to control more available resources at an alarming rate. When this occurs on a large scale, resources are not allocated to their full potential and more must be used up to gain the same efficiency. Violence is an act that is often demonstrated at a workplace. However, though it is prevalent, the reason for why it was enacted could be due to many reasons. For instance, an employee harassing another employee, from a managerial position, the employee would seem like he is not a good fit for the company. From a psychological perspective, there could be a connection, such as the other employee having the same name as an ex, which brings up bad memories to the aggressor. Or possibly he just snapped and a police officer would see this man as a menace to his peers. Regardless of the reason, violent behaviors are prevalent throughout society and the need to control these actions are becoming evermore necessary.

Past Injustice

...Past Injustices To forge a just society would involve being able to believe in peace within our world. To be human is to forgive those who have wronged us or those who share different beliefs. We are a country who fights for human rights all over the planet. We are a people who see torture and genocide as intolerable. We are one of five countries that still administer the death penalty. Have we learned nothing from the past? "We are witness to human suffering that is caused by violence being treated with violence. The guilty and innocent on death row awaiting their fate is a mental picture that does not seem possible in this century. Killing is never justified! Countless of innocent men are placed in death row with no evidence of wrongdoing and sometimes with clear and unmistakable evidence of innocence. Many groups have committed crimes against other people they viewed as different which meant they must be dangerous and a threat. I know this discussion asked for past injustices and affirmative action as a form of contrition and compensation. I personally think affirmative action is not the answer to past injustices which are still common in every human society around the globe. Just watch the evening news! We will see that the same old inhuman and evil acts against humanity are insidiously creeping back in different parts of the world, even in our own backyard, America! While we may not be directly responsible for past criminal and heinous crimes but we all should remain...

I sleep no more than six hours a night because of my desire to expertly meet my many commitments. Throughout my life, I have worked as long and as hard as I possibly can to effect beneficial changes in both school and society. During the summer of tenth grade, I took a number theory course at Johns Hopkins University with students from Alaska, California, and Bogota, Colombia. Similarly, during the summer following eleventh grade, I was one of ninety students from New Jersey selected to attend the Governor's School in the Sciences at Drew University. At Drew, I took courses in molecular orbital theory, special relativity, cognitive psychology, and I participated in an astrophysics research project. For my independent research project, I used a telescope to find the angular velocity of Pluto. With the angular velocity determined, I used Einstein's field equations and Kepler's laws to place an upper bound on the magnitude of the cosmological constant, which describes the curvature of space and the rate of the universe's expansion. Immigrant Groups In The Twentieth Century

...even foreigners who wanted a convergence of politics. Mayoud, a member of French-Palestinian and French-Arab organizations held the view of the Parti Républicain. This party advocated for the trampling of communities’ right to be different. It had a program in 1978 which maintained that immigrant communities possessed habits, practices and a way of life that offended the French citizens. Another participant (Henri de la Bastide) criticized French-born children of immigrants of ignorance regarding the western culture other than consumerism. He further warned that these children were potential dangers to the French economy and society as they ended up in gangs owing to their poor states. A similar standing to that of the Club de l'Horloge colloquia was held by the contributors in the GRECE conference to seal assimilation as a prerequisite for integration. Surprisingly, these elites had not gleaned anything from the Jewish eviction from Spain. Assimilation wasn’t helpful for the Jews and neither would it be for the prejudiced minority then. Unfit for Membership Rights can be used as a tool to challenge social hierarchies through legal battles. However, they have varying degrees of success depending on the context and country of origin as well as the status of the accused, particularly in the French society with regard to Muslim immigrants. As such the efforts to counteract discriminative agenda of the right have been met with invincible plans devised to draw new boundaries and thus...

“Bricks-and-Mortar” vs. “Clicks-and-Mortar”: an Equilibrium Analysis

...“Bricks-and-Mortar” vs. “Clicks-and-Mortar”: an Equilibrium Analysis Fernando Bernstein Jing-Sheng Song Xiaona Zheng The Fuqua School of Business The Fuqua School of Business Guanghua School of Management Duke University Duke University Peking University Durham, NC 27708 Durham, NC 27708 Beijing, China 100871 Forthcoming in European Journal of Operational Research The Internet has provided traditional retailers a new means with which to serve customers. Consequently, many “bricks-and-mortar” retailers have transformed to “clicks-and-mortar” by incorporating Internet sales. Examples of companies making such a transition include Best Buy, Wal-Mart, Barnes & Noble, etc. Despite the increasing prevalence of this practice, several fundamental questions remain: (1) Does it pay off to go online? (2) Which is the equilibrium industry structure? (3) What is the implication of this business model for consumers? We study these issues in an oligopoly setting and show that clicks-and-mortar arises as the equilibrium channel structure. However, we find that this equilibrium does not necessarily imply higher profits for the firms: in some cases, rather, it emerges as a strategic necessity. Consumers are generally better off with clicks-and-mortar retailers. If firms align with pure e-tailers to reach the online market, we show that a prisoner’s dilemma-type equilibrium may arise. Time Pressure

...Social Indicators Research (2005) 73: 43–70 DOI 10.1007/s11205-004-4642-9 Ó Springer 2005 ROBERT E. GOODIN, JAMES MAHMUD RICE, MICHAEL BITTMAN and PETER SAUNDERS1 THE TIME-PRESSURE ILLUSION: DISCRETIONARY TIME VS. FREE TIME (Accepted 6 October 2004) ABSTRACT. People’s welfare is a function of both time and money. People can – and, it is said, increasingly do – suffer time-poverty as well as money-poverty. It is undeniably true that people feel increasingly time pressured, particularly in dualearner households. But much of the time devoted to paid and unpaid tasks is over and above that which is strictly necessary. In that sense, much of the time pressure that people feel is discretionary and of their own making. Using data from the 1992 Australian Time Use Survey, this paper demonstrates that the magnitude of this ‘time-pressure illusion’ varies across population groups, being least among lone parents and greatest among the childless and two-earner couples. KEY WORDS: discretionary time, free time, leisure, time pressure, time use INTRODUCTION Being ‘money poor’ is a familiar phenomenon, a simple matter of not having enough money to meet one’s needs in any of the many ways those might be specified. Being ‘time poor’, by analogy, is a matter of not having enough time to do all the things one has to do (Vickery, 1977). It is said to be an increasingly common phenomenon in modern societies. There is some controversy over whether time in paid labour is actually increasing or not...

...Management Accounting Research, 2002, 13, 1–39 doi: 10.1006/mare.2001.0175 Available online at http://www.idealibrary.com on The association between activity-based costing and improvement in financial performance Douglass Cagwin* and Marinus J. Bouwman† This study investigates the improvement in financial performance that is associated with the use of activity-based costing (ABC), and the conditions under which such improvement is achieved. Internal auditors furnish information regarding company financial performance, extent of ABC usage, and enabling conditions that have been identified in the literature as affecting ABC efficacy. Confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modelling are used to investigate the relationship between ABC and financial performance. Results show that there indeed is a positive association between ABC and improvement in ROI when ABC is used concurrently with other strategic initiatives, when implemented in complex and diverse firms, when used in environments where costs are relatively important, and when there are limited numbers of intra-company transactions. In addition, measures of success of ABC used in prior research appear to be predictors of improvement in financial performance. c 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
