"The Scarlet Ibis" represents a grim type of realization for the reader. James Hurst uses colors and positions to help the reader understand how the comparisons align. Doodle's brother has to witness his decomposition throughout the story. The families yard represents the world and the scarlet ibis represents Doodle. As Doodle health declines, so does the now out of place scarlet ibis in their yard. The reader can also understand that Doodle also seems to not belong in the world because of his physical and mental state. The brother notices that in Doodle's death he is fragile, twisted, and red.
