...has caused employers to examine the guidelines and procedures within their organizations. Administrators must strive more than ever before to follow Local, state, and federal laws that have been put into place to protect employees and businesses. Protection Acts When exploring the many laws and regulations set forth by government it appears the original intentions were to demonstrate compassion for individuals by protecting employees from unfair practices in the workplace. According to U.S. Department of Labor - A Summary of Major DOL Laws (n.d.), The Department of Labor (DOL) administers and enforces more than 180 federal laws. The Fair Labor Standards Act requires employers to pay a minimum wage for regular and overtime work. OSHA administers the Occupational Safety and Health Act to ensure the workplace is free from hazards. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) protects individuals from discrimination in the workplace in regard to race, color, national origin, religion, sex, age, disability, genetic information, and retaliation for reporting, participating in, and or opposing a discriminatory practice ("Equal Employment Opportunity Commision," n.d.). These are only a few examples of employee workplace protection actions currently in place among the numerous...

...“Royal Battle” expresses the nauseating facts of discrimination to African American’s around the time of the Civil War in America during the late 1800’s. Ellison writes extensively about the manipulation African American men and women endured throughout history in his chronicle. However, the discrimination did not stop at name calling but continued to placing the people of color into fighting rings purely for the entertainment of the white men present at the events. Even so, placing the gentlemen on the floor to fight for money they desperately needed. A complete mockery of the young men pursuing a difference for their heritage after being promised equality by governing bureaucrats. In the beginning, the unnamed protagonist amplifies...

...In Aesop’s fable, “The Wolf and the Lamb,” the moral of the story asks the reader to examine the desire for an object—and how we justify our behavior if we cannot obtain that object. This moral is graphically presented through the repeated use of key words to describe the fox’s repeated failure to get what he wants. The fox’s first attempt is foiled as he “just missed” the grapes (35). He attempts “again and again”, running and jumping repeatedly, but has “no greater success” (35). He then becomes disgusted and walks away. These successive descriptions of his failure build to his disdainful comment that the grapes are probably sour (35). The repeated demonstration of fox’s failures and his self-rationalization of why is he walking away—not that he has failed but because he has decided that the grapes are sour and he does not want them anyway—cleverly portrays the moral of the fable: if you can’t get it, blame something else, not yourself. It therefore asks the readers to Aesop’s Fables 3 of 93 The Wolf and the Lamb Once upon a time a Wolf was lapping at a spring on a hillside, when, looking up, what should he see but a Lamb just beginning to drink a little lower down. ‘There’s my supper,’ thought he, ‘if only I can find some excuse to seize it.’ Then he called out to the Lamb, ‘How dare you muddle the water from which I am drinking?’ ‘Nay, master, nay,’ said Lambikin; ‘if the water be muddy up there, I cannot be the cause of it, for it runs down from you to me.’ ‘Well...

...depth and warmth in the colors that are used and wide swift brush strokes to create the images. The first image that caught my eye was of waves crashing on the left side of the painting. The white tips of the waves are very noticeable against the softer shades of the ocean. Behind the waves is a ship which is the next part of the painting that drew my attention. The ship seems to be caught in the rough waves of the sea and barely able to keep afloat. There is a glimmer of light from the sun peeking through and then what appears to be objects floating in the water. Without knowing the title of the painting I probably would not have known what these objects were but because the piece is title Slave Ship that leads me to believe that the images in the ocean are supposed to be humans, or slaves, that either fell out of the boat during the rough waves or tried to escape and swim away from the ship. The most interesting part of the painting is how the artist is able to seamlessly mold all of the images and emotions into one. It almost looks as though the piece was made in one continuous motion. The strokes and the colors used create a very powerful image and create a dramatic reaction for the viewer. This particular work of art by J.M.W. Turner was created during the romantic time period which originated in Europe towards the end of the 18th century. This time period was marked by intense emotion and aesthetic experience which revealed emotions of lust, fear, horror, apprehension and...

...marched in an equal rights parade, but I feel I have made many contributions in standing up for the rights and respect of others, to include myself (a woman who faced and endured a twenty year career in, essentially, a dominate male” field). After reading this article, I have been enlightened to the fact that I have erred many, many times while communicating with those of color, including very recently. Just two weeks ago I asked a Venezuelan friend and co-worker where she was from. She stated she was born in Indiana, but I proceeded to inquire as to where she was “really” from. She explained her parents were Venezuelan and that she lived there most of her life. I found this to be very interesting and told her so, but had no idea (till now), I could have offended her. In fact, the authors of this article would probably want me to offer her an apology for alienating her as United States citizen. Further, the authors have suggested I need to be extremely conscious of how I may serve a drink or offer food to my friends. If I should offer to pour a drink to a white friend before a black friend, my friend of color may perceive that I have...

...LITR201-1404B-08 Literature: A Reflection of Life Phase 2 Individual Project December 01, 2014 ‘Battle Royal’ and ‘The Birthmark’ These are two short stories that at first seem to be absolutely unrelated in composition and text. The first story ‘Battle Royal’ and the second one ‘The Birthmark’; upon reading both stories, it would be easy for someone to feel that they are about as distant from one another as two short stories could get. However, I have read and reflected on both and while they are different, they are also so very similar. The similarities, though best found by the reader and not by someone else’s summary will most probably be construed differently by each reader. These stories are set in two entirely different eras. The Battle Royal is set in the 30s well after slavery was abolished yet while racism was strongly prevalent. It was during this time that African-Americans were fighting for equality and trying to overcome bigotry and hatred. We find our young protagonist to be one that is fighting for equality and yet accepting of what can be deemed as near torture in order to prove his perseverance. In the story The Birthmark we find the setting to be in the late 1700s, as author is writing during the 1840s and speaks in the very first sentence of Aylmer living at the end of the last century (Hawthorne, 2014, 303-316). This was a time of extremely strong faith in men of science; these same men were put on pedestals as nearly being close to gods. It is this...

...of Race This essay “What’s in a Name,” Henry Louis Gates created a expresses on his viewpoint of the discrimination that his parents, particularly his father, experienced during his childhood in the South. The specific example that Gates refers to involves an incident where a shopkeeper who was friendly with his father referred to him as “George,” a name that Gates now realizes was a popular way of referring to African Americans in those times. Perhaps because his father made good money and the shopkeeper felt uneasy about his status, or simply because of the color of his skin, Gates’ father had to accept this discrimination and there was nothing he could do about it. “The “Black Table ”Is Still There,” Lawrence Otis Graham, this story he created a point of view I would never imagine over something so small, like sitting at the wrong table. Mr. Graham had mention,” It was always something that was a source of fear and dread for three hours each school morning of my early adolescence. What I found interesting was that the Gates family was different than the other African American families in the town. They were treated with a mix of dislike and respect. An example would be “Them being allowed to eat where other blacks couldn’t due to Mr. Gates’ reasons and were of privileged status.” Once the incident with Mr. Wilson had occurred, the author might have felt ashamed or a bit embarrassed. Also Henry Louis Gates Jr. “What’s in a Name?“, Gates deals with a sort of life changing...
