This experiment is a modified version of an experiment conducted by Stroop in 1935 which tested the interference between incongruent word-color combinations. Seventeen Queens College students participated in this experiment. The independent variable of the experiment was interference, and it consisted of three levels; colored “XXX” symbols, congruent color-word combinations, and incongruent color-word combinations. The dependent variable within the experiment was the mean response time it took participants to accurately choose the color that represented the word set before them. I hope to gain a better understanding of light and what the different colors of the spectrum mean. Being able to understand the colors from a light source will give me a better understanding of the types of elements and temperatures that make up that source. To be able to study the color spectrum I need to build a device called a spectroscope. A spectroscope spreads out light allowing you to see the different wavelengths or colors of light. The specific type of spectroscope that I will be building uses diffraction gating. Diffraction grating splits and diffracts light into several different beams of color. Diffraction gating is usually a thin piece of glass which contains thousands of tiny parallel lines. In the case of this experiment I will be using a CD, which has just that. To be able to single out a specific light source the CD must be enclosed in a small box. This box will contain a portion of a CD to reflect the diffraction gating, a small slit to allow the light source to enter the box and a viewing hole to observe the different wavelengths. The absorption spectrum(absorption spectra) is used to measure the absorption of radiation as a frequency or wavelength due to the interaction of the substance with the sample. It is used as tool to determine the presence of a particular substance and the quantity of the substance present in the sample or samples, as in this case I have 5 test tubes. The absorption spectrum for cobalt(II)chloride with the color red has a wavelength of 680nm(nanometers). This means that the solution did not absorb a lot of the color red. From the graph we can see that green was absorbed the most which had a maximum wavelength of 551nm(nanometers). Since the green was mostly absorbed, it was not reflected through the sample when hit with light. The absorbance of the cobalt(II)chloride is found first because with that we are able to find out the concentration level by using the formula M1V1=M2V2. For each test tube the concentration levels were different since they each had varying dilutions. From the images provided the viewer can interpret that war is very gruesome and negative. At a first glance the viewer is drawn to the center of the painting, as their eyes move around, they begin to decipher the painting and the heaviness of the painting is felt. The grim war zone overwhelms the viewer and displays an aftermath of evil.
