Schizophrenia and Borderline Personality Disorder

Not every disability is visible by looking at a person. Imagine living in a world surrounded by many people yet feeling alone, flawed, damaged, and unable to function in society. A patient suffering from mental illness can have these feelings every day. Education is the key to understanding mental illnesses such as Schizophrenia and Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). Even though Schizophrenia and BPD share similar symptoms, they are often confused and misunderstood. There are a large number of similarities between BPD and Schizophrenia. Studies have shown that there is a genetic link with both mental illnesses. Childhood trauma, such as physical, sexual, and mental abuse, is a common history for patients with these diagnoses. Neglect of a child has negative effects that last a lifetime. The neglect causes symptoms such as inappropriate mood control, fear of abandonment, and attachment issues. No matter the history, whether it is genetics or abuse, facts show mental illness is prevalent. People who suffer from mental illness have a hard time functioning daily. Individuals with mental illnesses suffer from poor self-esteem and isolate themselves when they are in crises. Patients with these illnesses have contemplated, attempted or were successful with committing suicide. One in ten, is the statistic for successful suicide in patients with BPD and Schizophrenia. A person educated in the mental health field easily notes the differences between BPD and Schizophrenia. The occurrence of Schizophrenia is more prevalent in men, while the occurrence of BPD is more prevalent in women. The thought processes in patients with the two different mental illnesses vary greatly.

This specific course was helpful in that it helped me see there’s more ways of doing things and not to worry about stressing yourself out. One of the most important things this class taught me was collaborative learning is an important aspect of life. In paragraph one the sentences are very short. It is very hard to see were the writer is going with this paragraph. All of the sentences sound the same. I can get lost trying to rearrange the sentences as I read so I can get the writers point. Paragraph five is the total opposite. I had no problem getting what the writer is trying to say. The paragraph flowed smoothly from beginning to end. The first sentence leads way to the next and throughout the paragraph. The writer used sentence variety by asking questions and grabbing the readers’ attention. Theirs one thing that I would change about paragraph five is the last sentence; I would use something that does not sound the same as the first sentence. Paragraph five I think is the best written of the two. In the feedback from WritePoint there were many suggestions on my final paragraph. One of the suggestions was in my first sentence, I used the word “feel” to describe what I think of the difference between the two paragraphs that I reviewed; Writepoint gave me a clearer writing suggestion saying,“ if “feel” is used in the sense of “to believe or think”, it is a cliché and vague; use believe or think.” I think that this is a great suggestion. It is confusing how some people use these names interchangeably. While Alzheimer’s disease and dementia have similar characteristics, the treatment for the disease is based on symptoms as well as how the diseases are acquired. Alzheimer’s is a form of dementia so they are very closely related. (Fraller, 2013) Knowing the slight differences between the two diseases could, in some cases, mean a cure. Both Alzheimer’s disease and dementia are caused by a dysfunction in the brain. In Alzheimer’s disease, there is a loss of brain cells brought on by age. Studies have shown that 10% of all people over the age of 65 and 50% of people over the age of 85 have Alzheimer’s. Out of all those people, only 1% of them inherited the disease. Someone who has experienced multiple head injuries or high insulin levels are also at a greater risk of acquiring Alzheimer’s. On the other hand, dementia is caused by changes to the brain. These changes may be caused by a stroke, brain tumors, or even head injuries. Diseases such as Parkinson’s disease, hyperthyroidism, B12 deficiency, and fluid build-up on the brain have also been known to cause dementia.
