Com 156, Assignment Week 8

I will use definitions in my paper. The reason is many people know that they have the option to rent or buy a home but they are not all familiar with the terminology. Rental property, investment property, equity, and principal and interest (P&I) are all terms that many people may not be familiar with. The whole point of my paper is to try to persuade someone to buy a home instead of renting for the rest of their lives. I cannot persuade someone to do something if they cannot understand the points that I am trying to make. Therefore definitions, or at least a quick explanation, would absolutely benefit my paper. Also, if I use terms that the audience does not understand this can make them decide to stop reading or completely shut out the possibility of considering my ideas. I would not feel comfortable, or see the point, of reading a story in a language that I did not understand. The same applies to reading information in any essay. The point of creating a persuasive essay is to persuade the reader. This can only be done if the reader can comprehend the material.

I believe that compare and contrast could definitely work in my favor when trying to persuade the audience, it can also work against me. I do not want to list too many negative points about renting because that will make the reader think that I am trying to push my ideas on them. On the other hand, I do want to point out some of the major points that will help me persuade my audience. The trick is I need to list enough points to get my reader to change their mind without making them feel like I am completely tarnishing their primary ideas. The point-by-point compare and contrast would work well for my essay. Point-by-point allows me to list an idea to compare and contrast between two subjects before moving on to the next thought. This is a perfect way to prove my point. I noticed that I did not list many positive reasons renting would be a good idea.

There are some changes I would like to make to my essay. I want to go over the explanations that I have listed for certain words and see if it would benefit me to change those to definitions. I believe it would because it would show the reader that I was serious enough about the subject to do my research. I do not have a real estate license or degree in finance to add to my credentials. So, it would be a good idea to add a few things to show that I completed research before I came to the conclusion that buying a home was better than renting. I may need to add a few more positive ideas about renting. Even though, I do not believe that renting is a good idea I would still like my reader to feel that I am not completely closed to the idea of renting. I believe these changes I will make will help me create a better persuasive essay.

Dipboye and Amanda Peek Phillips Rice University Many college students may find the academic experience very stressful (Swick, 1987). One potential coping strategy frequently offered by university counseling services is time management. One hundred and sixty-five students completed a questionnaire assessing their time management behaviors and attitudes, stress, and self-perceptions of performance and grade point average. The study revealed 2 major findings. The Time Management Behavior Scale consists of 4 relatively independent factors; the most predictive was Perceived Control of Time. Students who perceived control of their time reported significantly greater evaluations of their performance, greaterwork and life satisfaction, less role ambiguity, less role overload, and fewer job-induced and somatic tensions. Findings are consistent with theory and advice on time management (e.g., Schuler, 1979) but also indicate that the dynamics of time management are more complex than previously believed.
