Lehman Brothers Holdings, Inc

...Lehman Brothers Holdings, Inc. Thursday, October 24, 1929, easily ranks as the most dramatic day that Wall Street has ever seen. That day witnessed the beginning of the Great Stock Market Crash that over the following few years would result in an almost ninety percent decline in the Dow Jones Industrial Average ( DJIA). Although not nearly as dramatic as “ Black Thursday,” September 15, 2008, is a date that modern day Wall Street insiders will not soon forget. On that day, one of Wall Street’s iconic investment banking firms, Lehman Brothers, filed for bankruptcy. That bankruptcy filing ended the proud history of a firm that had played a major role in shaping the nation’s securities markets and economy for more than a century. Lehman Brothers had approximately $ 700 billion in assets when it failed, which makes it the largest corporate bankruptcy in U. S. history, easily surpassing the previ-ous headline- grabbing bankruptcies of Enron, General Motors, and WorldCom. By comparison, the telecommunications giant WorldCom, which temporarily held the title of the nation’s largest business failure after collapsing in 2002, had less than one-sixth the total assets claimed by Lehman Brothers. The shocking announcement that Lehman had filed for bankruptcy caused the DJIA to plunge more than 500 points within a few hours. That large loss was only a harbinger of things to come. Within six months, the DJIA had declined by more than 50 percent from its all- time high of 14,164...

China's One Child Policy

...of com-fort women is: “…there is no hard archival evidence that women were forcibly ‘taken’ to work in the comfort stations…” (Han and Lee), which equals official denial. China’s Progress on Human Rights Regarding Health Services China has made improvements in the area of human rights however, more needs to be done. For example, while access to health services such as medical and dental has been increased, the technology behind those services are not to western standards. Moreover, to receive an ap-pointment in timely and cost effective manner, it is who you know. I have first-hand knowledge on how both of those conditions play out. While visiting China last summer, I needed some dental work to be done- observing the way that the work would have been done made me put off services until I returned to the states. My mom did have dental work completed which required fillings and was able to quickly get an appointment due to the influence of my grandmother (on my father’s side) who is a highly placed executive in a major corporation. However, within a day those fillings fell out. When my mom returned to the states, she went to Comfort Dental- those filing are still intact. The people in Chi-na are unable to receive good quality dental services that is common place in the west generally and the United States in particular. Also while in China, I underwent a physical exam at a major medical facility. The services included an eye, ear and nose exam, a cardio and respiratory exam and...

...A power supply is an electronic device that supplies electric energy to an electrical load. The primary function of a power supply is to convert one form of electrical energy to another and, as a result, power supplies are sometimes referred to as electric power converters. Some power supplies are discrete, stand-alone devices, whereas others are built into larger devices along with their loads. Examples of the latter include power supplies found in desktop computers and consumer electronics devices. A CD-ROM /ˌsiːˌdiːˈrɒm/ is a pre-pressed optical compact disc which contains data. The name is an acronym which stands for "Compact Disc Read-Only Memory". Computers can read CD-ROMs, but cannot write on the CD-ROM's which are not writable or erasable. A network switch (sometimes known as a switching hub) is a computer networking device that is used to connect devices together on a computer network by performing a form of packet switching. A network switch is considered more advanced than a hub because a switch will only send a message to the device that needs or requests it, rather than broadcasting the same message out of each of its ports. A network switch is a multi-port network bridge that processes and forwards data at the data link layer(layer 2) of the OSI model. Some network switches have additional features, including the ability to route packets; these switches are commonly known as layer-3 or multilayer switches. Switches exist for various types of networks including Fibre...

Framework NAIL THE CONCEPTS Watch your CPA Review videos first – before working any assigned homework questions. The CPA Review industry says to watch a section of CPA Review video and then work the accompanying MCQs. This perspective stems from the old-school approach to the paper and pencil exam where you had to sit in a live classroom and learn from an instructor on weekends. Today, there is a smarter way to study. You don’t have to go to a weekend live course. You can fire up the laptop on a Tuesday morning and knock out two hours of material before you even brush your teeth. If you work MCQs in week one over your week one topic, guess what? You will work them again in week 5 or 6 when you review because you will forget what you learned. If you watch a video in week one and score an 85 on the corresponding MCQs, will you be able to score an 85 four weeks later? Not likely. You will need to work them again anyway and it’s not a smart use of study time. Instead, let the N.I.N.J.A. Framework guide you. INTENSE NOTES Repeat after me: “PUT THE HIGHLIGHTER DOWN.” Which method do you think will...

Note that this update is not part of the syllabus for the PRM or Associate PRM exam. It is included for reference and explanation only.) 2002 saw an unprecedented number of corporate scandals: Enron, Tyco, Global Crossing. In many ways, WorldCom is just another case of failed corporate governance, accounting abuses, and outright greed. But none of these other companies had senior executives as colorful and likable as Bernie Ebbers. A Canadian by birth, the 6 foot, 3 inch former basketball coach and Sunday School teacher emerged from the collapse of WorldCom not only broke but with a personal net worth as a negative nine-digit number.2 No palace in a gated community, no stable of racehorses or multi-million dollar yacht to show for the telecommunications giant he created; only debts and red ink--results some consider inevitable given his unflagging enthusiasm and entrepreneurial flair. There is no question that he did some pretty bad stuff, but he really wasn't like the corporate villains of his day: Andy Fastow of Enron, Dennis Koslowski of Tyco, or Gary Winnick of Global Crossing.3 Personally, Bernie...

Guide to Product and Target Report

...Guide to Assessment 2 for MKC1200 Principles of Marketing     Due to space constraints, the Unit Outline contains the bare minimum of information needed for this assessment task, so I have put together a few notes here to guide you through. I hope it helps you and results in better quality assignments for us to mark and more rewarding results for you!   1.0 Format and style Basically, you are writing a report on some marketing issues. Make sure you use a consecutive numbering system throughout the report, and an appropriate heading/sub heading for each section – probably somewhat as I am doing in this paper.   Your assignment must be submitted in Times New Roman size 12 pitch with 1.5 spacing. Any smaller and it’s very tiring to read after about 25 papers; and with single spacing there isn’t any room for feedback.   Remember not to use any personal pronouns: we, us, I, our, your and so on. This is a formal paper and must be written in the third person. Please don’t use slang, either. Sometimes I see phrases such as ‘heaps of…’, and ‘a great idea…’ - this informal style of writing is OK when you’re writing to your friends, or when we’re having an informal conversation, but doesn’t belong in an academic paper that you submit for assessment. Use marketing language wherever you can – think in terms of the core concepts. Abbreviations are also inappropriate in a formal document: hasn’t, doesn’t, won’t, can’t, ad, advert, advt’g. Remember to give words their...
