Comma Comma Comma What? Comma Comma, Comma Comma Chameleon a chapter in Mary Norris book between you and me: The Confessions of a Comma Queen. In this chapter I’m going to analyze the meaning and give you a clear understanding of the text. This whole chapter discusses how we use commas and the many ways we use and misuse them. Some ways we may misuse them would be using them to make sentence fragments or just placing a comma in the wrong place. In chapter five of her book she states “basically there are two schools of thought: one plays by ear, using the comma to mark a pause, like dynamics in music.” There is more to that but the meaning behind this is the fact that people use the comma in more then one way. Like Mary Norris says: “we have alphabet soup why don’t we have punctuation cereal.” A serial comma is the one you put before the word “and” in a sentence. The serial comma in my opinion is one of the most commonly used commas we see. I say this because we sometimes get lazy and don’t want to figure out when to stop our sentence and form a new one. Could we live without the serial comma? Looking at the chapter paragraph two in this chapter she seems a little confusing.to clear it up shes saying that we over use the serial comma. Yes it is a good thing to have but we shouldn’t always use the word “and”. Shes says something like isn’t and just enough? In this case the word and isn’t just enough sometimes sentences don’t sound correct without the “and” and the comma before it. When else would you be able to take a breath without interrupting the read. The serial comma is used a lot in the oxford university press according to paragraph 9. A lot of the oxford university sees it as a waste of time however kids use it to reference to on a lot of bios because it supposedly gives them a little bit of snob
