..."Ich bin schwul und das ist auch gut so"---I am gay and that is a good thing”. This is what Berlin’s Mayor Klaus Wowereit prior to the 2001 mayoral elections said. In a matter of seconds, everybody throughout Germany knew about it. There was positive feedback about his coming out, but it also aroused criticism. In this essay, I would like to discuss the assets and drawbacks of coming out the closet. I think this is a very important subject because many people struggle with their sexuality. Reflected in this struggle, many people are flawed to the degree at which they hide their sexuality. It takes a lot of courage to come out the closet and therefore many homosexuals decide to rather stay anonymous. How different one can react in regard to this subject is shown in Tony Kushner's play “Angles in America". Most of the characters in this play struggle with their sexuality as well. Roy, Joe, Louis and Belize all deal with the issue of coming out throughout the play. However, every single one of them deals differently with this issue. Prior is definitely one of the most openly gay characters in the play. He demonstrates certain openness about his sexuality within the play, he shows his dependence on his boyfriend Louis when he is not feeling very well. Prior says at the end of the play: “I can handle pressure, I am a gay man and I am used to pressure". (Here Prior implies that being gay has made him stronger than most people; discrimination towards him, has made him "tough.") Contrary...

...The two readings that I have chosen to write my final paper for our “Queer Americans” class over are Middlesex and Fun Home. Although the two books are very different stories, they also have undeniable similarities at the same time as they portray the struggles as well as the rewards in dealing with their queer sexualities. These readings connect well because they both deal with two coming of age individuals dealing with struggles in discovering their sexualities, with very dysfunctional home lives. The way queerness is depicted between the two storylines have been drawn out in two very unique, yet equally effective within the messages that the books portrayed. Queerness, usually a word or phrase that describes a type of sexuality, it correlates...

...Historical and Scientific Perspectives on Homosexuality Melissa Harrison PSY265 June 2, 2013 Dr. Angela Kolter Historical and Scientific Perspectives on Homosexuality How do I think historical and scientific perspectives on homosexuality may have shaped the way gay individuals perceive themselves? I believe that the way people used to think and still do about gay people are preposterous. What I mean in that statement is that people thought of gay people as criminals. Although in the past homosexual relationships were common based in Roman and Greek cultures, Christianity denounced those sexual associations and made their belief and intentions clear that this behavior were not to continue. The legal system became intertwined with the Christian belief that homosexuality was sinful and would punish inappropriate sex acts as criminal offenses (Rathus, Nevid, & Fichner-Rathus, 2005). Historically, the topic of homosexuality within religion has been condemned by Judeo-Christian and Islamic. They find it to be sinful because it is viewed as a form of non-procreative sex. However, homosexuality is widely documented throughout the ages. In antiquated cultures such as the Greeks and the Romans, men frequently engaged in homosexuality relationships. The first historical perspective involving the Western culture was male homosexuality, which was more accepted and less taboo than lesbianism. This was due in part because men were seen as the superior gender whereas...

...Personal Response on Sexuality Identity Jonathan Scroggins Psychology of Human Sexuality/PSY265 April 4, 2015 Kimberly Sampson Personal Response on Sexuality Identity Personal Response on Sexuality Identity My personal response regarding my sexuality and identity are laced with religious beliefs, above all else. I believe that my attitude to the diversity of sexual orientation and identity is very open-minded. There are many things that I have learned, regarding sexuality, since first starting this class, and there are other things that have merely been confirmed or solidified in determining my personal sexuality identity. Growing up, I was influenced heavily by religious beliefs. As far back as I can remember, there has always been the church in my life. It was a strict code of rules and was void a relationship that so many Christians refer to as a fundamental basis of their faith. Sex was never discussed except for the “lustful” thoughts, acts, or implications. Sin was always associated with sex (or lust). Hardly ever were there any “good” sermons, counsel, or guidance regarding sex, sexual identity, or sexual orientation. It was a rather close-minded idea of how a person should act. Like many others, as I became an adult, I began to think on my own. It was not until I started college that I understood the concept of critical thinking. Since then, I have been able to evaluate my stand as a Christian and its relevance to sexual identity. My attitude towards sexual...

...Sex and Sexuality: Having the Conversation with Our Children Tyra M. Robinson Professor Stacy Hurley Sociology 101 September 11, 2012 Sex and Sexuality: Having the Conversation with Our Children In many countries talking about sex is treated as taboo. (Macionis, 2009, p. 192) Parents are not talking to their children about it. They just tell them not to have it until they are married, and a child’s extent of conversation about sex is asking, “Where do babies come from?” during adolescence. But is this really enough? Is the lack of knowledge on the topic ruining the social outlook on sex and sexuality in our Society? Not talking to our children about sex and sexuality at home leaves them to learn about it from outside sources such as, school, peers and media. Through these sources they might learn how to put on a condom and birth control, sexual diseases, pregnancy and abortion. What about their sexuality? Gender, incest, homosexuality and other sexual issues like rape and molestation? As much as some of these topics may frighten us as parents to talk about with our children, the harsh reality is, they need to know. They should know that sexuality is about more than just having sex. That sexuality is a theme found almost everywhere, and it is an important part of how we think about ourselves, as well as how others think about us (Macionis, 2009, p. 192). As parents we should let them know that sex can be pleasurable, but it can also be very confusing and frightening...

...people see them differently because they have feeling for the same sex. Their feeling of liking or loving the same sex, and seeing someone with the same organs and being stimulated by it. In everyday society homosexuals are starting to accept themselves more and once peoples perspectives around them change it gets more comfortable for them. In ancient Greece, established men formed sexual relationships with adolescent males at about the age when they first grow a beard Raghu’s ,Envied , and Fichner-Rathus,(2005).The main sexual activity was the older male inserted his penis between the younger male thighs until he ejaculates. This isn’t someone coming out that they are gay, for me this is forced by a culture. It is amazing to see how different each religion and culture is Rathus ,Nevid , and Fichner-Rathus,(2005). Especially one like ancient Greece younger male not even having a choice of what they are interested in.Everone should have a choice. (p.287) In fiftieth century the city of Sodom was destroyed by God. I can still here my Grandfather preaching this from the book of Genesis just like our reading says. Sodomy which is just male on male intercourse was very common in Florence. In Genesis God destroyed Florence and though every preacher interpret differently. Most preachers that I know said it was destroyed because or...

... PSY/265 PSYCHOLOGY OF HUMAN SEXUALITY 10/14/2012 Petar Sardelich Historical and scientific perspectives on homosexuality have had such an impact on societies and their people all around the world, that some people have taken their own life to avoid admitting that they are homosexual. Homosexuality has its own unique history through the ages. These views varied from acceptance, to deviance, to illegal, to an abomination according to the bible and religious beliefs, to partially accepted, to individual choice, to scientific findings pointing to genetic differences. I don’t know that any other subject has any rival that has such a vast history. Because of these different views and beliefs, “homosexual people, like heterosexual people, struggle to incorporate their sexuality within their personal identity, to find lovers, and to establish satisfying lifestyles. In fact, gay marriages are now permitted in a number of states. Unlike heterosexual people, gay people in our culture face a backdrop of social intolerance, even if they commit themselves to long-term relationships”, (University of Phoenix, Human Sexuality in a World of Diversity). Even in a world that is changing and becoming more aware and accepting, homosexuals, in our culture of Western...

... LGBT Homosexuals have it very hard in today’s times no matter if they are open about their sexuality or if they are hiding who they are. I do not think people wake up and decide today is the day I will be gay. I often wonder if people know from early on that they are gay or if it takes them awhile to figure it out. No matter what sexual orientation a person chooses this does not give people the right to treat them differently. In reading about the historical and cultural perspectives I can understand why some people chose to keep their sexual orientation a secret. In some countries the practice of men with boys was common but it was considered behavior instead of orientation. The book does not say much about if any of these men preferred men or women but I think some may have preferred men. I do not believe that this kind of behavior can go on without someone wanting to continue this type of behavior. In cultural perspectives I was surprised to see that a lot of societies see male to male relationships normal because of how we view it here in the United States. I was also surprised to see that in the swans of North Africa that unmarried sons were given to older men but later married women (Fichner-Rathus, Nevid, & Rathus, 2005). Also it was surprising to see that in Sambian what young boys have to do to become headhunters. After they go through all of this they are still expected to go out and marry women. I have to admit this all of this is confusing to me because it seems...

...Historical and Scientific Perspectives on Homosexuality Alton Masters Psy/265 – Psychology of Human Sexuality June 7, 2013 Professor Belden This paper is all about the historical and scientific perspectives on homosexuality. In this essay we will be discussing the historical, biological, and psychological perspectives on homosexuality. We will also go over the impact that these perspectives may have had on the way homosexuals perceive themselves. Also included will be an analysis of the experiences of coming out and adjusting as a gay individual. Lastly we will talk about how these historical, biological, and psychological perspectives have impacted mine own sexual orientation and how they have shaped the way I view homosexuality. Historical Perspectives on Homosexuality Homosexuality, be it gay or lesbian, has existed throughout history. There have been many different attitudes towards homosexuality including tolerance in some societies, open encouragement in others, but in most societies this behavior has been condemned. While homosexuality has mostly been condemned, this was not always the case. A couple of examples are the ancient Greece and Rome. In Greece is was common for established males to form sexual relationships with adolescent males at about eh age of the adolescents growing their first beard. “Romans described highly feminine gay men who dressed flamboyantly, had showy hair styles and mannerisms, and cruised certain neighborhoods, searching for partners...

...Response on Sexuality Identity Lillian M. Floyd PSY/265 Lauren Lappe February 16.2014 A person’s sexual identity may seem like something obvious, something that should be an essential characteristic of our lives. However as we have found, these things are not always so simple, often finding that our sexual identity, is ever changing most of our lives. I have given my own identity some thought and I find for me it wasn’t easy. In this essay I will be discussing my own identity and my reasons for coming to the conclusions that I have come to, and why I came to them (Rathus, Nevid, & Fichner-Rathus, 2005) Sexuality is and will always be a natural and healthy part of living. All of us have different values or strong beliefs. Our sexuality is like a beautiful diamond being multifaceted with different ethical, emotional, psychological, and physical dimensions. Regardless, there are effects and consequences for any sexual decision we make (Rathus, Nevid, & Fichner-Rathus, 2005) I was a reckless teenager never taking into consideration the consequences of my actions by being so promiscuous. After looking over the different sexual values in our text it seem that when I was younger I favored hedonism because I was more into the pleasure that I received from it (Rathus, Nevid, & Fichner-Rathus, 2005) I can relate to more than one sexual value system(s). Legalism for example, because I come from a very religious family and my father...

...can only be so different – it is as if there is a certain level of difference that can be tolerated, and anything beyond that comfort zone is deemed to be wrong. Today, it has become evident that more people have gathered the courage to defy society’s comfort zones and rise above them. Now, we see an increasing number of homosexuals that are becoming more open about their sexuality, but the question there is, are they coming out of the closet explicitly? Or is it simply an implied action? In the Philippines, we have local scenes that vividly showcase homosexual pride. We see this through the pubs that welcome gay acts to perform every now and then, the parlors whose staff consists primarily of gay stylists, even through the media we see how homosexuality is showcased through the rise of gay showbiz personalities such as Boy Abunda and Vice Ganda. All these examples do in fact show that homosexuals are given great respect in these fields, and that they have been accepted by the majority of the masses, but these people, they have come out to us in a different way – there was no profound declaration of their sexuality, they simply showed it to us through...

...Of course coming out of the closet isn’t easy. Some people have know all their live some people found out while playing spin the bottle, I realized when she cut her hair. So kinda like spin the bottle. Anyways, I’m talking about the gay or the bi or the consed- whatever the case may be, it’s not easy. Whether it be because of society's take on it or your own personal feelings coming out is never easy. It’s scary and vulnerable. If you are unsure f how people are going to react; don’t do it. You don’t wanna be kicked out or sent to some conversion camp where they teach you that god in fact does not love all his children, only the straight ones. I guess that's the cold-hard truth. I myself am no where near religious and could give...

...I think that the historical and scientific perspectives in the text have been shaped in a way that gay individuals may think of themselves in that if they give these types of individuals’ different views people might view the way they look at gay people and their lifestyle. In the past it was hard and very keep secrets in some countries but others embraced it. In some countries male to male relationships were normal because it was part of becoming a man. The cross-cultural perspective is one perspective that provides to gay individuals the perspectives for different cultures and the way that they view the gay sexual orientation. Some different cultures view between two individuals of the same sex is immortal, while other cultures believe that it is normal for two people of the same sex to have intimate relationships. Biological perspectives also has an effect and shape the way homosexual individuals see themselves because based on evolution, genetics, and hormonal perspectives. Homosexual individuals may look at their sexual orientation and believe that their sexual orientation is because of the way that evolution has occurred. Genetically they might assume that they were made that way because they inherited their sexual preference when they were born. Testosterone the male hormone is what drives a male to be attracted sexually to a female. If a man with a lower level of testosterone might be more attracted to a male rather than being more attracted to a female, which might be...
