Types of Communication COMM 208

Types of Communication Part One Description of an Informative Message An informative message provokes a natural response from the receiver (Locker, & Kienzler, 2010). The sender of an informative message can express appreciation or gratitude for an action the receiver performed. Informative Message It pleases the firm to announce an appreciation luncheon for the support staff members. The luncheon will be in the conference room between the hours of 12PM and 2PM. This to show the staff gratitude for their hard work this year as well as assisting the firm in meeting their objectives for the year. The Legal Intelligencer featured the firm as one of the top five reputable firms in the City of Philadelphia. The firm wants to at this time encourage the staff to continue operating according to the firm’s high standards to continue providing the clients with outstanding services. Part Two Description of a Negative Message A negative message may provoke a negative response from the receiver; however, it will also provoke changes where necessary (Locker, & Kienzler, 2010). For example, a negative message is necessary if the above firm received a complaint from a client. Negative Message There will be a meeting in the conference room to discuss a complaint from a client. The complaint may lead to a possible malpractice suit against the firm. Every member of the firm must attend. The agenda for the meeting will include loss prevention so the firm can avoid another incidence of this sort. The agenda will also include policy and procedure because it is clear someone failed to follow the firm’s standard procedure, which is unacceptable. Please note failure to follow policies and procedures in the future will result in disciplinary actions.

Part Three Description of a Persuasive Message A persuasive message may be either informative or negative in nature (Locker, & Kienzler, 2010). The sender want to either have the receiver remember the message or accept the message (Locker, & Kienzler, 2010). Persuasive Message The firm will conduct a meeting with the staff to discuss the addition of flexible spending to the health benefits package. Flexible spending will assist with co-payments for hospitals stays, prescriptions, and dental care. Not only will the flexible spending feature assist with co-payments but also will assist with cutting healthcare costs for the staff. This feature is not mandatory; however, the firm highly recommends staff members to consider accepting it in light of the current cost of health care. The meeting will take place in the conference room between the hours of 10AM and 12PM. The firm is also providing lunch for those who attend.

...Barriers in Business Communication Cynthia Hines COMM/208 October 11, 2011 Grace Kneeshaw While communicating in the workplace you have to follow certain guidelines, and that is what takes place in my current job environment. Respect is a big issue. Some people often tend to forget that we are human beings. It does not matter whether or not you are higher in position than others. Talking formally to other employees/employers is another way communication expressed. In which, can create a problem within the plant, because we got people who gossip, and switch what they have heard around and end up hurting ones feelings. These two expressions go hand in hand. Being respectful allows you to speak in a proper tone or language. There are also barriers when it comes to the workplace. The one I encounter the most is cultural. There is an excessive amount of stereotyping, many employees speak different languages, and it tends to cause misunderstandings. The women in my workplace, tends to take the lead and get away with things more often than others. Another barrier is personality. The way we process information is also different from others, I am a hands on learner and often clash with the employees who needs precise explanation. This is when the personality barriers often start. Communication can sometimes become a very big problem, and may interrupt me at times, or just maybe slow me down. ...Lou Jay COMM 3200 Journal Article Review * ARTICLE INFORMATION: Yanovitzky, Itzhak, and Jo Stryker. "Mass Media, Social Norms, and Health Promotion Efforts: A Longitudinal Study of Media Effects on Youth Binge Drinking." Communication Research 28.2 (2001): 208-39. ProQuest. Web. 3 Sep. 2013. * TOPIC/THEORY: The article is about the effects media has on society’s perception of binge drinking among young adults. “The study examines the validity of a norm-reinforcement approach as a complementary model to direct media effects on health behavior change.” The ideodynamic method and a time-series regression were applied in this experiment. * RESEARCH QUESTION OR PROBLEM: The study was conducted to see if media’s efforts to persuade youth to stop drinking are effective. As stated in the article, alcohol is the most widely used and abused drug among youth in the U.S. The authors set out to address two concerns. First, the believability of the norm-reinforcement approach compared to other paths of media effects on health behaviors. Second, the credibility of a direct or indirect path from media representations of risky behaviors compared to social expectations. * METHOD: The researchers considered four factors in order to test their theory. First, they surveyed high school seniors on their views of drinking. Second, they looked at news coverage of binge drinking between 1978 and 1996. Those newspapers were chosen to represent coverage of alcohol abuse in the national...

...April Beckham Comm./ 215 May 12, 2014 Dr. Marie Orizondo-Harding Persuasive Essay With racism still in existing in this day and time it’s hurting the members of our society. So many times we tend to look over all the derogatory statements and gestures of racism not realizing that’s hurting us more each and every day. Discrimination based on a person’s race or ethnicity is morally wrong. This paper will argue the fact if racism still exist in this day and time. There are many different reasons that living in society that we could all point reasoning’s as to why racism is wrong. At many universities and colleges across this nation there is an annual commemoration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and his vision of “a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.” In one eloquent phrase, Dr. King defined both the essence of racism and its cure. Judging someone by race or skin color is racism, and moving toward judging someone only by their demonstrated character is the cure for racism. Campbell, D. G. (2012). The cultivation of racism. Academic Questions, 25(3), 389-393. doi:http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s12129-012-9310-y The controversy has been framed in terms of gender (women), sexual preference (gays), religion (Muslims), ethnicity (Hispanics), and class (blue-collar workers), among others. But it is perhaps more stark in the case of race. Racism against "Blacks" is frequently cited as a reason why society needs...
