...Operation “Government Shutdown” As many already know, October 1, 2013 marked the first day of the sixth federal government shutdown in the United States of America’s history. The shutdown spanned over sixteen days causing about 800,000 federal employees to become furloughed without pay, government operations put in a minimal manning status, national park closures, and many other unfortunate situations. The government shutdown was ended on October 17, 2013 as a result of Congress and the Presidential staff coming upon an agreement to continue operations for a short period to hopefully develop a solution all parties can agree upon. With that being said, on January 15, 2014 will we face the same fate due to our government being unable to devise a plan to fund our government operations and get the debit ceiling under control (Pisani, 2013)? The future of our country strongly depends on the decisions made by the lawmakers of this nation. We should not have to live in a state of mind where we do not know whether or not we will every recover our economy and get America moving back forward again. Effects on local community Living in the city of Augusta where a large population of workers and businesses depend on government as a source of revenue can be hard in the wake of a shutdown. Most government employees received 60% of their pay before taxes and these individuals still had to pay for their living expenses. Imagine being a government employee, securing your lifestyle around...

...RSV Prophylaxis in Preterm Infants Betty Danford COMM/215 January 12, 2015 Yvonna Starr Carnieri RSV Prophylaxis in Preterm Infants Respiratory syncytial virus or RSV is a common infection in young children usually causing only mild cold and upper respiratory symptoms. Infants with chronic lung disease and premature infants are likely to have more serious effects, including re-hospitalization and respiratory assistance (Haelle, 2014). In July of 2014, the American Academy of Pediatrics issued updated guidelines to decrease RSV prophylaxis for preterm infants. I work in a neonatal intensive care unit and support the new guidelines that reduce the number of infants that qualify for RSV prophylaxis. RSV prophylaxis or Synagis is administered to qualifying infants prior to discharge from the neonatal intensive care unit and given monthly throughout RSV season. Previous guidelines included dosing any preterm infant 31.6 weeks gestation and below throughout the RSV fall and winter season. Infants born between 32 and 35 weeks gestation qualified for RSV prophylaxis based on risk factors of: living in a home with children or siblings five years of age or less and day care attendance. The updated guidelines in 2014 recommend RSV prophylaxis for all infants born before 29 and 0 days gestation. Infants born before 32 weeks qualify for RSV prophylaxis if they require > 21% oxygen for 28 consecutive days following birth. RSV prophylaxis remains relatively...

...Abortion-The Wrong Choice Renee Pina University of Phoenix COMM/215 December 3, 2011 Abortion-The Wrong Choice Plain and simple, abortion is murder. I strongly oppose abortion. God creates life and only God has the right to take life. Pro-Lifers want an amendment to the US Constitution that will give equal protection under the law to all living humans from time of their conception to the time of their natural death, and I fully agree that American needs that amendment. However, I question what kind of society do we live in that we have to ask for that kind of protection to begin with? I do not believe that the government should fund abortions. I do not believe that the government should fund Planned Parenthood, which is the largest abortion clinic in America. I believe that the violence inside and outside abortion clinics in America is wrong. Abortion is legal in the United States. In 1963, the Supreme Court decided in Roe vs. Wade that a woman can have an abortion in the first six weeks of pregnancy. Almost half of all pregnancies are unplanned and half of those half end up as abortions. The abortion debate has been ongoing for decades in America. Those that oppose abortion stand firm in their belief that they are right. Those that are pro-choice believe that a woman has a right to decide what is best for her. There is very little middle ground when it comes to...

...What is a Good Resource? COMM 215/Essentials of College Writing By: Team C Instructor: Dr. Karyn Riedell 14 April 2014 Assignment Discuss the attributes of a good resource as it relates to the chosen topic for your Final Research Paper and Presentation due in Week Five. List the necessary attributes as agreed upon by your Learning Team. Then list three of the resources chosen for your final project, and explain in 75 to 100 words for each resource how it meets the chosen criteria for selecting a good resource. Introduction To write a paper or any document, it is important to ensure that the material that is referenced is fact based and is classified as a good resource, but what exactly is a good resource. There are multiple answers to this question; however there is certain criteria that makes some resources good, while others may lack. We evaluate that if the resource is written by a subject matter expert in the field, the information in the resource is classified as good. Next, the timeframe in which the document was written comes into play, if the information is outdated or superseded by updated information, the resource may not still be applicable. The type of document is also important, stated generally, what would a user trust more, information contained in an encyclopedia or in an online blog? Last, is the information in the resource needs to be unbiased so that the user is able to evaluate a topic without having a pre-determined stance in support...

...Sandra Matterson Comm/215 Essentials of College Writing November 13, 2014 Kate McCarty Minimum Wages Minimum wage is defined as "the lowest wages permitted by law or by a special agreement (such as one with a labor union)". Minimum wage is a controversial topic in economics and politics because there are good and bad intentions behind it. Many employers are against the increase of minimum wages, especially ones with a large amount of minimum wage workers. Although some employers agree that employees deserve an increase. When an employer has a business that gets big enough to need additional employees, they hire more since they are unable to do the work themselves. The goal is the additional money they bring in must be more than what they are paying their staff. As a business owner what can you do? If you raise prices it will drive customers a way. Some companies have created automated services likes self-check out to prevent paying higher wages to workers. $10.00 equals one fast food meal, 2 gallons of milk and a loaf of bread, or a little over two gallons of gas. Which now they want to add taxes on our gas. With minimum wage at the current rate you must work one hour to earn the ten dollars that only supply you with small necessities for everyday living. And in order to make it in this economy you would either have to work over-time just to make ends meat. So for example: I make $10.50 an hour and I tend to work between 90-120 hours in a two week pay, part-time notary...

...California Minimum Wage COMM/215- Essentials of College Writing California Minimum Wage In 2016 California minimum wage will be the highest in the country jumping form $8 per hour to $10. This will be the first minimum wage increase in six years. This increase will come in two separate $1 increments the first to take effect on July 1, 2014, and the second on January 1, 2016. Democrats back the bill saying it will help families in this economy, and it will also stimulate the economy because people will spend more money. Governor Jerry Brown said that this was an “overdue piece of legislation that would help working class families.” Republicans say it will hurt small business and hurt job growth. The California Chamber of Commerce called it "a job killer," and the California Restaurant Association said it was a "blow to small businesses" because they were thrown off by the proposal of the raise in minimum wage (“California to raise minimum wage to $10 by 2016,” 2013, para. 10). The maximization in the raise of the California minimum wage will help to decrease poverty in California. Even with the tax relief that was put in place for a family of two children, most families are still below the poverty line because they are working full time jobs earning minimum wage (“Obama gets behind democrats' $10.10 minimum wage proposal,” 2013, para. 10). Most families that are working only earning minimum wage are barely making ends meet to support their families. Hiking up the minimum...

...The War on Tobacco Jacquelyn Valdez COMM/215 September 1, 2014 Winifred Donnelly The War on Tobacco I am sure most people know that smoking harms your body, in some cases irreparably. Having access to this knowledge then begs the question, why would someone continue smoking? Maybe some people do it because they are in denial about all the effects that smoking has. Perhaps some have always smoked and since nothing negative has ever resulted, they do not believe the reports. Of the many reasons smoking is a bad habit, I have selected a few to elaborate on: 1) smoking has been known to cause cancer and other health problems 2) the toll that smoking takes on the family when a person fails to recognize the impact and 3) the increase in tobacco is making the purchase of cigarettes cost prohibitive. The Cancer-Related Fact Sheet (Source: www.cancer,org) reports staggering statistics as it relates to new cases and deaths related to cancer. In 2014, 224,210 new cases of lung cancer were reported. Similarly, 159,260 related to lung cancer were also reported – that’s about 436 people every day that die from smoking. While lung cancer is not the only cancer that is caused by smoking, it is the leading type. My mother was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer last year and her physicians attribute it to environmental reasons, put simply, smoking. She underwent all of the chemotherapy and radiation and the doctors removed the cancer, but she continues to smoke to this day. The oncologist...

...San Diego Water and Sewage Customers Affected by Glitches in the Billing System KTC COMM/215 November 1, 2011 Pamela J. McGlynn San Diego Water and Sewage Customers Affected by Glitches in the Billing System The recent 24 million dollar upgrade to the San Diego water and sewage billing system is not performing as planned. The new billing system errors are occurring in customer billing rates, water and sewage service, and customer service response. In July 2011 the City of San Diego Public Utilities Department upgraded the water and sewage billing system at a cost of 24 million dollars. This billing system serves San Diego and the surrounding metropolitan areas, and has not performed satisfactorily,” in fact”, as of today; thousands of customers cannot log into the billing system whereas others are experiencing interruptions in their water service. It takes a few days up to two weeks to process mailed in payments. The system is back logged, and response times are very slow with customers waiting hours or days before receiving a response. The water and sewage billing system, is overseen by the City of San Diego Utilities Department. The Utilities department has been deluged with both calls and e-mails complaining about the situation. This increase in customer service complaints is forcing the department to hire new employees and also to have current employees working nights and weekends to respond to the increased workload. These employees, both new and current can...

Carl was given this task in April by his boss Monica however she has not followed up with Carl to ensure the task will be completed on time. Carl did not take the appropriate steps to prepare the new hires for orientation. Case background Carl Robins has successfully hired fifteen new employees to work for ABC Inc. Carl’s boss, Monica Carrolls, has tasked Carl with ensuring that all fifteen new hires have all of their paperwork completed and all training documents ready by the June 15th orientation. Carl did not begin working on his task, even after his boss Monica asked him if he would have all of his training done by the June 15th deadline. When Carl did finally start the task, he found that almost all of the required hiring documents were missing, and none of the mandatory drug screenings had been done. Carl then found out that the orientation manuals were incomplete and he did not have enough books for his training class. Lastly, Carl discovers that the orientation room was booked by another group for the entire month of June, so now they don’t have a training room to hold the event. Also, the training room has already been scheduled for the whole month of June by another employee. Carl as many issues that need to be remedied such as incomplete employee files, missing paperwork, and the orientation room being double booked. Background Carl has started a new recruitment of trainees for his Operations Supervisor, Monica. To his dismay a few weeks before his orientation he discovered that that some of the new trainees didn’t have applications or transcripts in their files. The new hires hadn’t been sent to the clinic for their drug tests either. He also found out that another employee, Joe, had scheduled the training room for a computer training seminar for the whole month of June. If Carl wants to get his orientation on schedule and completed he needs to find a way to get his paperwork finished on time and find a place to conduct the training. Alternatives Possible alternatives for Carl’s situation could be: 1. Push the start date for the orientation back to a later date. (Possible constraints: Monica was...
