...for nearly one hundred years, but discrimination and racism is at its peak. There are people who once owned or have had African-Americans work for them in Lesson Before Dying. Many African-Americans were passive in the book because rich white people who did not go to school and just inherited their wealth would often see an educated black person as somewhat of a threat. Grant often battles with whether to speak as the educated person he is, or as white people expect him to speak. Grant is passive when it comes to the demands...

...INTRODUCTION Children today face a lot of challenges that were not present, or maybe not realized, years ago. It seems that children are not allowed to be children very long. Society today accelerates the growing process; and our children are suffering the consequences of dealing with adult issues far too early in life. It also seems that some parents are not aware that while allowing the child to live as an adult, experiencing adult things rob them of their natural childhood development. There are many reasons why our children are growing up so fast, but in most cases the parents must take the blame. Maybe they are using the example by which they were raised; maybe they feel that they should just be friends with their children, or maybe they are too young themselves and don’t know how to raise children. Whatever the reason, the children are the ones suffering. We have a God given privilege to raise our children and it comes with responsibility. God expresses in Proverbs 22:6 “Direct your children onto the right path, and when they are older, they will not leave it.” (NLT). The responsibility of a parent is to properly direct their children in a lifestyle that will lead them to mature adulthood. And if the raising of your children is proper and productive, they will retain the principles in their later years. There are several areas that must be addressed when our goal is “Raising Well-Rounded Children”. Those areas will be address in this paper. Although this information is...

...Based on the theories of first and second language acquisition, how do you think the average Malaysian student learn English? Discuss your reasons. Introduction Young children are natural language acquirers; they are self-motivated to pick up language without conscious learning, unlike adults. They have the ability to imitate pronunciation and work out the rules for themselves. The idea of “English is difficult” does not occur to them unless it’s suggested by adults, who themselves probably learned English academically at a later age through grammar-based text books. The advantages of beginning early Young children are still using their individual, innate language-learning strategies to acquire their home language and soon they also use these strategies to pick up English. Young children have time to learn through play-like activities. They pick up language by taking part in an activity shared with adults such their parents and teachers. They firstly make sense of the activity and then get meaning from the adult’s shared language. Young children have more time to fit English into the daily programme. School programmes tend to be informal and children’s minds are not yet cluttered with facts to be stored and tested. Children who have the opportunity to pick up a second language while they are still young appear to use the same innate language-learning strategies throughout life when learning other languages. Young children who acquire language rather than consciously...

But to me I always felt as there was some type of restrictions on life as to what I could and could not do. I mean I saw other kids my age and color out having a ball, living their lives without a care in the world. I even seen some that were once my friends get carried away in a police car. Janks Morton is a brilliant Black man and more people should look up to him as how he is trying to educate the people of color about themselves, especially the young and old black males. In this documentary he has went abound to the black community discussing the facts as to why the things that are happening are happening. It is not because they were raised wrong or simply because they are black, but because of the thoughts being put into each person’s mind. One of the most damaging forces tearing at young black people in America today is the popular culture's image of what an "authentic" black person is supposed to look like and how that person is supposed to act. When asking the question “Are there more black males in jail or in college?” our own people quickly...

This is the issue that needs to be discussed. Why are vaccines a necessity of current times? Even though vaccines may have some side effects, they have saved many lives as everyone already knows. They prevent many types of diseases and stop the spread of others. Just image having to send your children to school that’s filled with other children carrying diseases and viruses. Viruses such as small pox, measles, and mumps that could invade your child’s body which in most circumstances will then be brought home and spread to other family members. Therefore, every child in America needs to be vaccinated before beginning school because vaccines can prevent disease, save lives, and alleviate sick days at school. Another example is polio, although preventable, once this disease is contracted it can lead to permanent muscle weakness. ...How to Become an Authentic Speaker By Nick Morgan At a companywide sales meeting, Carol, a vice president of sales, strides energetically to the podium, pauses for a few seconds to look at the audience, and then tells a story from her days as a field rep. She deftly segues from her anecdote to a positive assessment of the company’s sales outlook for the year, supplementing her speech with colorful slides showing strong growth and exciting new products in the pipeline. While describing those products, she accents her words with animated gestures. Having rehearsed carefully in front of a small audience of trusted colleagues, all of whom liked her message and her energy, she now confidently delivers the closer: Walking to the edge of the stage, she scans the room and challenges her listeners to commit to a stretch sales goal that will put many of them in the annual winners’ circle. But Carol senses that something’s amiss. The audience isn’t exhibiting the kind of enthusiasm needed to get the year off to a great start. She begins to panic: What’s happening? Is there anything she can do to salvage the situation? We all know a Carol. (You may be one yourself.) We’ve all heard speeches like hers, presentations in which the speaker is apparently doing all the right things, yet something—something we can’t quite identify—is wrong. If asked about these speeches, we might describe them as “calculated,” “insincere,” “not real,” or “phoned in.” We probably wouldn’t be able to say exactly...

...ATTENTION DEFICIT DISORDER Attention Deficit Disorder: Alternatives to Stimulant Medication Eng 215 Abstract Today, millions of children are taking stimulant medications for ADHD. Most of these children are being medicated without even receiving a proper diagnosis. While on these medications, children experience harmful side effects. Some children have died from complications related to the medication. The list of symptoms for ADHD reads like a list of bad behavior not a medical condition that warrants medication. Parents are outsourcing their parental responsibilities to pharmaceutical companies. Alternative treatments are available and have been proven effective. Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder: Alternative Treatments According to the 1994, Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 4th ed., (DSM-IV) Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD) is a disruptive behavior disorder characterized by the presence of a set of chronic and impairing behavior patterns that display abnormal levels of inattention, hyperactivity, or their combination. (as cited at http://www.healingwithnutrition.com/adisease/add-adhd/cdcplan.html) ADHD is mostly diagnosed in children and adolescents. (DEA, 1995) ADHD is not a disease but yet most children diagnosed as having ADHD are treated with medication. ...work primarily in relation to the author. It defines poetry as an expression, or overflow, or utterance of feeling, or as the products of poet’s feelings. The theory tends to judge the work by its sincerity to the poets’ vision or the state of mind. Such views were developed mainly by the Romantic critics and remain current in our time too. Wordsworth’s definition of poetry as “the spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings recollected in tranquility” is taken as the ground idea of the expressive theory of art. The most powerful impetus in expressive critical thought was the Romantic Movement that began in late eighteenth century. This movement has deeply affected our modern consciousness and the common sense discourse of literary commentary. The three key concepts associated with this movement are: imagination, genius and emotion. Expressive theorists firmly stick to these three key terms. They believe that authorial individuality is something to be conveyed by a literary work, and to go beyond objectivist theorists’ prescription that a poet’s effort should be to flee personality and that criticism should focus on the poem not on the poet. Wordsworthian notion that “a poem is inner made outer” puts an emphasis on the poet in a poem, and this emphasis has never eased. B. Objective Theory The term "New Criticism" defines the critical theory that has dominated Anglo-American literary criticism for the past fifty years. Its method of close reading and emphasis on the text...

...Decision-Making Gone Awry Casey Heard Management Decision Models Argosy University Mitchell Franklin October 15, 2013 Abstract The purpose of this analysis is to discuss, review, and analyze various ineffective decision-making processes that can cause negative and unsuccessful decision-making outcomes and results. Social influence, such as peer pressure, social media, television shows, radio announcements, magazine articles, online and offline advertising and other forms of marketing, and even the utilization of the Internet are all tools that can be used for success; however, they can also be used in a negative manner, thereby creating ineffective, unsuccessful decision-making results. It is imperative for those in decision-making roles to be cognizant of decision-making tools that can be improperly utilized, thereby creating unsuccessful decision-making outcomes. Decision-Making Gone Awry Introduction Ever since the beginning of time, there have been people, both individuals and in groups, who fill the authoritative role of making decisions. People have the ability to make decisions for themselves by themselves and for others with others. An individual is sometimes in charge of decision-making for an entire team, group, or staff, or a group of people sometimes is in charge of an individual filling a role underneath their authority. Whatever the case or situation may be, there are effective and ineffective ways to utilize decision-making methods, which create either...

...Running Head: GAY MARRIAGE 1 Gay Marriage: Good or Bad? Terry Richmond SOC 120 Robert Gala Oct. 1, 2012 GAY MARRIAGE 2 Gay Marriage: Good or Bad? Some organizations will lead you to believe that if same-sex couples are allowed to marry it will further weaken the institution of marriage. However, two people of the same sex should be allowed to marry because it would give them basic rights such as hospital visitation, taxation, and access to family health coverage. Same-sex marriages could bring a huge financial gain to local and state governments in the form of marriage license fees, higher income taxes, and a decrease in state benefit program costs. If we continue to deny marriage to same-sex couples it will send the message that it is ok to discriminate against them. As some well-known anti-gay groups such as Focus on the Family diminish their stance on gay marriage, a core of smaller groups that are mostly religious motivated continue to demonize homosexuals...

...Sample Essays #2—“The Pupil” by Henry James Sample C In Henry James’ story, “The Pupil” James introduces three main characters, Mrs. Moreen, Morgan Moreen, and Pemberton. All three of these characters interact with each other and it is through this interaction that one can see the character of each. By closely examing “The Pupil” one can see that Henry James creates contrasting characters that work together to tell a story. By first comparing Pemberton to Mrs. Moreen, Henry James is able to compare different classes of society. Mrs. Moreen, who is very rich, as evident through the description of her “fat, jeweled hand” regards money in a offhand, careless way. One gets a sense of this carelessness through Pemberton’s opening thoughts regarding money. While he is focused on his salary, the reader gets the sense that money is of no concern for Mrs. Moreen since she never broaches the subject. Mrs. Moreen represents a class of high society, while Pemperton contrasts this by representing the lower society. Throughout the story, Pemberton’s main focus is about his salary. His worry about his salary represents his, and his societies, concern and appreciation for the value of money, contrast directly with that of Mrs. Moreen’s disregard and unconcerned attitude for money. Thus through these characters and the relationship between them, one gets an idea of the social structure of the time period. Henry James also contrasts Pemberton with Morgan Moreen. Pemberton...
