The Outsiders

The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton is "[A] classic coming-of-age book"(Philadelphia Daily News) about 3 brothers in a gang that have to go through life with many obstacles in their way. This book is written by a fifteen year old girl named S.E. Hinton. She wrote the book about what was going on in her life. This novel is about two rival gangs, the Greasers and the Socs. The Greasers are from the east side of town and are known as hoods. The Greasers have long, greasy hair and are poor. The Socs are from the west side of town. The Socs wear nice clothes and are smart. The Socs are also the rich people. Many characters in The Outsiders lean on each other for support while showing loyalty, kindness, and moral courage toward each other. …show more content…
"I had to. They were drowning you, Pony. They might have killed you"(57). When Johnny said this, he was in the park with Ponyboy after the Socs jumped them. The Socs jumped them because they were drunk and looking for a fight. During this Johnny killed Bob with a knife because the Socs were drowning Ponyboy in a water fountain. The Greasers always stick together and look out for each other. When the Greasers are doing this they are very loyal to each other.

In The Outsiders Dally showed kindness toward Ponyboy when he hit him in the back because his jacket was on fire. "Dallas hit me. How come? Because your back was on flames, that's why"(94). When Ponyboy said this, he was in the hospital. He was in the hospital after Johnny and him saved the kids from the burning church. Dally hit him because his back was on fire and if he didn’t hit him then Ponyboy could have been severely burned. Also Ponyboy could have been killed because of the flames.
