“Ladies and Gentleman, Garfield and Friends. Friends are there to help you get started, to give you a push on your way. Friends are there turn you around, get your feet on the ground for a brand new dayyyyy….”, if your small tube television never sung this tune, or any other tune that opened up for an animated series, in the morning during breakfast, then I must say I’m quite sorry for you since you basically missed out on one of the best things of childhood: animated cartoons. Except for anything on PBS KIDS, the big and mean adults always criticized the early animated cartoons deeming them as “not educational” and that they “ruin the minds of kids” but that can be contradicted with today’s animations. When South Park was first broadcasted on television, I thought the running gag of the show was “ OMG (shortened for those know text language), they just killed Kenny!” Let me tell you how Lil’ Johnny corrected my thought when his incident became the number gossip in elementary school. It’s just one in the afternoon and everybody’s in their assigned seats acting like pure angels except for Johnny whose lately been given an attitude to everybody. The poor teacher’s frustrated face and expressions can be easily compared to my mom’s when I stayed up past twelve.
Time out seemed like the most lenient punishment for this disobeying buckaroo. The problem being was Johnny didn’t cooperate so the only option left was the principal’s office. Johnny-once again- refused and called the teacher the big NO-NO “B” word. The “OMG. He didn’t just say what I think he just said did he?” expression popped up on every kids face except mine. Until I got over the fact that “shut up” was the numero uno bad word, I was kept of gossip parties during the next recess period. Invisibly dressed up in my Sherlock Holmes outfit, I scouted to find answers. My first place of search was the little b-boys at the court and they actually cooperated with me being ironic that Johnny is a part of the junior basketball team. “Johnny’s gonna be in so much trouble” one kid with red shorts blurted out while the boy on his right reported to me that “Johnny told Ms. Riley what Stan told Cartman” causing memories from the other night’s episode to connect.
When my brother dares to even open the television, especially before finishing his homework, I make sure that the only thing that he could watch is Thomas the Tank Engine or something probably a bit mature than PBS like Spongebob . I really hope a toilet cleaner in square pants won’t influence my brother to become another Lil’ Johnny. Cartoon Network doesn’t even live up to its name anymore, now that it airs Family Guy and American Dad earlier at night and has removed enjoyable cartoons. Garfield, Popeye, and Scooby Doo are all things that bring laughter but those animated cartoon pals are in the past, now we have cartoons that are aired on channels for children which should in fact be suited for a much more mature audience. Cartoons help us waste a portion of day by just watching them and procrastinate on homework. Why is there a need to air these shows that only educate kids in a way that they will just learn unnecessary words that will sooner or later be censored by the FCC or learn bad actions portrayed by the characters in the show?

...A Hanging Commentry The poem A Hanging has a very odd mood for what is happening in the poem. The poem talks about people in jail and an inmate on his way to be put to death. The prisoners do not show any sign of remorse after the inmate is put to death and gone on with there everyday activities, some even laughing and having a good time. The author uses many literary elements in the story such as imagery, simile, mood, foreshadowing thought and climax. The author uses these literary elements in order to provide the reader with a better understanding of the poem and to decribe how the prisoners handle the hanging. Orwell uses a bountiful amount of imagery throughout the poem. He uses the imagery to let the reader depict a picture and get a better understanding of the poem. One example of imagery in the poem is in the eighth paragraph "At each step his muscles slid neatly into place, the lock of hair on his scalp danced up and down, his feet printed themselves on the wet gravel." This quote is giving a sample of the tremendous amout of imagery in the poem. The imagery is present in describing how his muscles move into place in every step and how his hair flows and dances in the wind. Another example of imagery is when Orwell describes the hangeman "The Hangman, a gray haired convict in the white uniform...". The hangman is described as a fellow prisioner and it gives the reader the visual of the hangman dressed in white sort of like a ghost...

...The article discusses the environmental issues that Australia faces as a result of numerous companies emitting greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide. Thanks to that, a negative externality occurs because the production of goods and services in Australia has a major effect upon a third party. For example, a company is set up next to a residential area; this will have a negative effect on the residents living in that region. For this reason the Australian government is deciding whether to impose taxes on carbon emissions for the worst polluters Figure 1 shows that the marginal private costs of the Australian firms are below the marginal social costs, the pollution created has caused an extra cost to the society, such as respiratory problems for the residents living around the polluting firm. For that reason, Australia is taking the leading role in addressing this problem. The country’s firms are only concerned with its private costs (e.g production costs) and will produce at Q1. ...Global Market Asian stock increased in the last two weeks excluding Japan, of which the Nikkei declined by 2.85% in continuous three weeks, mainly due to the weak economic reports from Japan and the Bank of Japan’s decision to keep its monetary policy unchanged. This overall growth should be attributed to the boosting measures taken by governments. China accelerated approval of quotas to QFII to boost the market. The Ministry of Finance in India lowered the withholding tax on overseas borrowings to encourage raising funds abroad. South Korea planned to cut its financial deficit next year to the smallest in six years to improve fiscal health. Moreover, investors have gotten less risk-averse as the European sovereign-debt situation has become less volatile and the U.S. Federal Reserve has announced a third round of bond-buying stimulus. Yield Curve Most of Asian countries’ government bonds have a high yield curve. For example, the yield curve of Chinese government bonds below is over 1 per cent higher than that of U.S. Treasury. This feature mirrors the worrying credit environment in Asia. However, the credit environment will be and is being better, which will be explained more later. Economic Data In the past two weeks, many Asian countries disclosed quite favorable economic data. For example, CPI and Industrial production of Singapore increased by 4% and 2.5% year-to-year respectively while those of Korea increased 1.2% and 0.2%. Retail sales of Hong Kong increased 3.5%...

...Commentary #2 1. Kitler-s has presented in chapter 1, a significant amount of the information on the topic of food and Culture. How specifically did thi chapter help you to understand the relationship between food and culture? Make a list of 5 significant or salient points, and discuss one of the items on your list which found to be the most interesting. Even if “food and culture” book speaks mostly about American food habits related to culture this is the perfect example to see how the intake of food of a person is affected by his/her culture. The specific definition if food shown in the very first page of this book shows us how eating and feeding is different. Even do this relationship between food and culture did never cross my mind as I started reading this chapter I found it interesting in many ways. There were a lot of points which I find significant i. Fist of all I would like to mention the topic which brought more curiosity and the many point about this which immediately crossed my mind: food identity. This relates a lot specially to people of my age so I totally putted myself on the situation. There are a lot of facts, which can identify food with our identity. Trying to be cool in front of friends and eating fast food is something, which brings more and more kids and teenagers to obesity. Our food habits or culture are definitely taking in account when we want to be in shape and look better. For most young guys who want to have the perfect toned...

Avatar Commentary

...Thus, scientists grow Navi bodies modified with human DNA, called Avatars, that are controlled by mentally-linked human operators in order to get in touch with the Navi. Jake Sully is one of these avatar operators and succeeds to be a member of the natives and consequently he becomes to be a spy. Indeed, he delivers key strategic information to the human militaries and moreover he discovers that the Navi will never leave their forest owing to their way of living in harmony with the nature. While humans decide to begin the war against the natives, Jake Sully develops strong attachments to Pandora and its inhabitants so he decides to change ends and to fight against the human attack. After a short summary of this film, I am doing some commentaries of it. This science fiction film isn’t so unreal to the contemporary world. In the film, the war begins owing to a precious mineral, which is very expensive. Indeed, nowadays humans are able to make war in order to get petrol, land or money and they don’t realize that some men and women die or they can destroy the earth. For instance, United States, Europe and Russia have enough nuclear missiles to explode 10 times the planet. The economic science explains these phenomena and I am presenting two theories: According to...

...Sound Effects: I was able to find a website that provides sounds of cameras flashing and flashes. You are able to go on the website and preview the sounds. Although, you have to buy the sounds and there are $2.00 a piece. I think this would be a great idea just incase the video doesn’t work and it will be able to create sounds during the scenes. The website is: www.audiolicense.net Commentary Idea: I did like the idea of having a host for show, just like they would have during an awards show on television. I think that they should say funny things for the audience could enjoy. I would also be a great idea if there was a male and a female host. The male could wear a tux and the female could possibly where different gowns in each scene or they could wear clothing that was not pick for the runway. Quotes: “I don’t do fashion, I am fashion.” – Coco Chanel “Fashion is what you adopt, when you don’t know who you are.” – Quentin Crisp “Fashions fade, style is eternal.” – Yves Saint Laurent “Only great minds can afford a simple style.” – Stendhal “The difference between style and fashion is quality.” – Giorgio Armani “If you’re not into fashion, you are nobody.” – Lord Chesterfield “As soon as fashion is universal, it is out of date.” – Maneron Ebner-Eschenbach “The only rule is don’t be boring and dress cute wherever you go. Commentary On Segregation

...I believe that the overall theme of the passage and video was segregation, and I found both sources to be very interesting. In the passage, William and his father had to wait to get water because they were stopped by 2 white men. According to the passage, “They told him that he’d have to wait until all of the white people were finished.” This quote from the passage explains why William and his father had to wait to get water. During the time of segregation, black people were ranked a second class citizens. Therefore, William and his father were forced to wait in line to get water. When his father explained to the two white men that he would just come back the next day to fetch water, the two men didn’t let him leave. They told his father that he and William and are going to stay here and wait until all the good white people were finished. After the good white people were finished and had, then he and his son would be able to get water. This act led William’s father, after finally getting their water, to say, “What you saw there was real hatred and prejudice. William’s father said this to point out what discrimination against one race looks like, otherwise known as prejudice. Right after telling this to William he included that, “... there’s gonna come a day when this won’t be anymore.” What William’s father meant by saying this is that there will be a day when segregation disappears in the US for good. This statement was also presented in President Kennedy’s video message, President...

...Glennis Gilmore McCray ENG-105 April 14, 2016 Priscilla Bamba Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is defined as Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a brain disorder marked by an ongoing pattern of inattention and/or hyperactivity-impulsivity that interferes with functioning or development. Merriam Webster defines medication as a substance used for medical treatment, especially a medicine or drug. Consequently psychotropic medication is defined as any medication capable of affecting the mind, emotions, and behavior. Some medications such as lithium, which may be used to treat depression, are psychotropic. Also called a psychodynamic medication. When ADHD and medication are paired together the results can be amazing. However for every action there is a reaction. This reaction can sometimes overshadow the good that has been done. The trend of hidden dangers of ADHD medication, the effects of taking ADHD medication and making the right choices for your family. The hidden dangers of taking ADHD medication are discussed very often. The Harvard Medical School has stated that “Medications — chiefly the stimulants dextroamphetamine and methylphenidate — are the only proven treatment for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), with its symptoms of distractibility, impulsiveness, and hyperactivity. But the benefits of stimulants last only as long as patients continue to take them, and worries about the risks of long-term use are again in the news...

Justice Delayed Is Justice Denied

...Hayley Masi May 8, 2013 Law Lipman E1 Justice Delayed is Justice Denied The term “Justice delayed is justice denied,” was written by William Ewart Gladstone (1809-1898). Gladstone was one of the greatest English politicians and was also former British Prime Minister. It has several possible origins, one of which is the Magna Carta, clause 40 which states, “To no one will we sell, to no one will we refuse or delay, right or justice.” A prompt trial is guaranteed by the sixth amendment of the United States Constitution. A defendant who is held in jail for a lengthy period of time prior to his day in court could ultimately be found not guilty and then will have been in a sense wrongfully imprisoned. Trials that are pushed back for years may mean that witnesses may be lost or their memories may fade and a guilty man could walk. Victims of crimes and their families must prolong an agonizing ordeal awaiting their day in court. Parties on both sides of the law may be adversely affected by a justice system that is slow and inefficient. In the New York Times, an article written showed that in the Bronx there were more people waiting for their trial then in the rest of the city combined. This borough “was responsible for more than half of New York City’s criminal cases that were over two years old, and for two-thirds of the defendants waiting for their trials in jail for more than five years.” Of the cases eventually tried in the Bronx, less than half of the...

The Assault Commentary

...1 February 2015 In The Assault by Harry Mulisch, Anton is haunted by his past throughout his life. His past during World War II consist of witnessing losing his family. This impacts him to the extent that his choices of living life are influenced by it. From the excerpt of The Assault, Anton finally realizes what he has done, in which he notices his choices are made from neglecting his past. He sees his current family asleep and evaluates himself whether or not he should seek the truth of his past from a man named Takes, knowing that if he does, he would have a different perspective on his life. Anton is considering if he should seek the truth of his past. His state of mind is being compared to it “cooling off,” conveying he wants to keep a clear mind in order to decide to learn the truth. He wants his mind to be “cooling off” because he finds it to be necessary to make a decision he does not want to regret later on. “Cooling off” his mind will help him take in account the consequences of the outcomes of either decision. If he does not clear his mind, then he would choose a decision he would regret, since he knows he could have carefully considered either decision. The audience sees Anton is trying to achieve his best state of mind, by “cooling off” to make a critical decision in his life. This evokes a theme: decision making because by “cooling off,” he believes he can make a decision he can be content with. “Police sirens sounded in the distance” foreshadows Anton making a...

Commentary on Edirtorial

...Before writing my article I read various articles and debate some opposing and some proposing the topic of euthanasia, the style model I used was also an editorial that extensively gives the readers the main idea of what Euthanasia is, it doesn’t necessarily take sides (for or against) it just leaves it to the reader to decide if it’s wrong or not, it was taken from the ‘Encyclopaedia Britannica’; the purpose of this text is for reader to adopt the view that euthanasia is seen different based of each and every individual. The aim of my article is to convince and persuade and also inform the readership that euthanasia is not murder but mercy killing. In terms of target audience ‘life. It’s not for everyone’ should appeal to both men and women that are aged 18 and above or generally anyone who is of age and is facing the situation here society is telling them that euthanasia is wrong or bad. The aim of a persuasive text is to influence and so there needs to be a close relationship between reader and writer. To ensure that my piece is persuasive and that it has a friendly but firm tenor, after the introductory paragraph I began to tell the reader stories and situations of real life individual to pull emotive strings. Throughout ‘life. It’s not for everyone’, I have tried to incorporate interesting examples of lexis, the most notable is repetition or antistrophe and this is demonstrated right from the opening ‘act of terminating and individual’s life’, ‘… whose life...

Commentary Essay

...Tattoo Trend Taking Over Many people today are getting tattoos, and the people who are getting them are getting them done younger. “Teens are the largest growing group getting tattoos, though this ‘body art’ is seen increasingly in professionals such as counselors, nurses, doctors, lawyers, and business managers.” (Nicoletti, p.215). People spend a lot of money on tattoos, although I could not find a scholarly source on how much is spent annually, many of the source that I found for 2013 said that in the United States people spent $1.65 billion dollars on tattoos. (Tattoo Statistics). Although tattoos are an old art form, getting a tattoo has become a trend fairly recently, and with that the art side of tattooing is being diminished. “Tattooing is not a new phenomenon in many parts of the world. As far back as 2000 BC, there is evidence that tattooing was practiced in Egypt, and in many countries it has been used as adornment and to denote status.” (J. Caplan). Tattooing has obviously been around for quite a long time, and today tattoos illustrate completely different meanings from what they used too. I seriously doubt that in 2000 BC people were getting tattoos because they thought it was a fun idea. People have started to undermine a great art form, they are doing this by taking any meaning from the art they are getting. What I mean by this is that in the past, recent and ancient, tattoos represented something about a person, weather it was a representation of their status...

Go to Treblinka Commentary

...Go to Treblinka Commentary In the poem ‘Go to Treblinka’ Halina Birenbaum writes about the horrific nature of the World War II death camp, Treblinka. This commentary will look at the poem as a whole and how the writer uses specific techniques and tone to create feelings of sorrow and mourning. Birenbaum uses anaphora, the words “Go to Treblinka” become a refrain through the course of the poem and is used eight times. The imperative nature of the refrain is emphasized by the word ‘Go.’ The word is also an action verb giving the poem a feeling of necessity. The stanzas in the poem are also quite disorderly and creates a feeling of chaos representing the chaos of war. The stanzas also use enjambment to capture the attention of the reader. The poem also focuses on involving the reader by saying “listening” and “them.” The first stanza opens with the poems refrain, ‘Go to Treblinka,’ the use of the word ‘go’ urges the reader to do this. However as the reader is physically incapable of doing this the poet instead uses the senses to take the reader to Treblinka. “Keep your eyes wide open/Sharpen your hearing” alerts the reader, asking the reader to increase their senses so that they can even see or hear the death of the people. The poet writes “listen to the voices which emerge from every grain of that earth” suggesting the mass of death that occurred at Treblinka. The reference to ‘every grain’ emphasizes the idea of mass death as there are millions of grains. The second...

The Commentary of “Scene Sisters”

...Student’s name Professor’s name Class Date The Commentary of “Scene Sisters” Culture is inseparably connected with the political life of a country. The same thing happened in China: the end of Mao’s era provoked the cultural growth in the country and, as a result, introduced new forms and another thinking to the arts. Young filmmakers known as the fifth generation revolutionized film language and film styles in Chinese cinema (Zhang 226). The period of 1979-1989 brought many significant changes in Chinese National Cinema, such as the transition from social realism to humanism and the emergence of visual effects, which are the main argument of the article “The PRC: Humanism, the Avant-Garde and Commercialism”. There was a great difference between the Mao and the post-Mao eras in Chinese culture and, especially, art. The films of a famous Chinese director Xie Jin show the changes in cinematography after Mao’s death. Xie Jin’s films of the 1980s reflect the changing cinematic landscape in the post-Mao years (Zhang 229). The differences between two eras are evidently seen in Xie’s film “Stage Sisters” where the director through theater showed government’s attempts to hide problems, war consequences, and the impossibility of proper art developing. Moreover, the film clearly demonstrates the changes between the fourth and the fifth generations of directors. The main feature of the fifth generation was humanism that means the priority of humans over politics as well...
