Extra Gum Commercial: The Story of Sarah and Juan

Extra Gum released a commercial to touch the hearts of potential gum costumers. It is set up in the style of a music video to a touching love song. The video starts in a High School where are girl and guy, Sarah and Juan; meet eyes for the first time. Then Sarah offers Juan some Extra gum. The video then fast-forwards to Sarah and Juan after a date in a car and they have their first kiss. This kiss is also followed with Sarah offering Juan some gum. Then the montage quickly shows Sarah and Juan together in fall, winter, and even at Prom, after each Sarah continues to offer some Extra gum to Juan. Then as Sarah and Juan age, Extra gum seems to be a part of their life. Sarah offers Juan gum after their first fight and as she leaves to move away from him. Then as the montage emphasizes their love story and the distance now between them, it shows us something new. Now we see that Juan is drawing or writing on the Extra gum wrappers that Sarah gives him. Then when Juan visits Sarah in the city, Sarah is going to meet him. Sarah walks into a art gallery to find dozens of gum wrappers with pictures of each of the big moments in their relationship drawn on them. It appears that each time she offered him some gum, like the way they met, Juan would draw that moment on the gum wrapper and keep it. As Sarah is getting touched by the sediment, she comes upon a drawing of Juan proposing to her. In her surprise she turns around to find Juan on one knee with a ring. This moment seems to complete Sarah and Juan’s love story. This commercial is wrapped up with a Wrigley slogan, “give Extra, get Extra”.
This commercial is seen on TV rather often. Most times that I have encountered it is during the day or early evening. Most commonly seen on stations that play movies or dramatic TV shows. This is obviously appealing to people’s emotional side. It really plays on the heartstrings. This commercial is targeted at those who it may touch emotionally. The ending with the proposal makes us believe that it is targeting women; women who will connect emotionally and fall in love with Sarah and Juan’s story along with Extra gum. I do think that this is an effective and subtle way to get the point across. The subtly allows the audience to make their own connections about the gum and get invested into the commercial.

Apple Music Commercial: Taylor vs. Treadmill

Apple Music came out with a commercial that has gotten a lot of attention for its humor and how it is starring Taylor Swift. The commercial starts with an up close frame of Taylor Swift putting in some earphones. Then she narrates to herself, “Man, I hate cardio”. Then she gets out her IPhone and turns on apple music. She then goes through the whole process of picking music for the gym. In the meantime she is showing viewers how Apple Music really works. Then she chooses a popular song by Drake and Future called Jumpman. As the song plays, Taylor sings along while she is running on the treadmill. The situation is humorous because she is trying to rap and while she is running on the treadmill, she really just looks goofy. Then at the climax of the song she falls off the treadmill. The screen then blacks out to the words, “Distractingly good.”. The add finishes with the Apple Music label on the screen. I have come across this commercial on many social media accounts. The humor behind it really targets the youth considering pop-star Taylor Swift is in it, and she is singing a very popular hip-hop song by Drake. Apple Music is obviously trying to get the youth that are using their IPhones to see this add. This commercial is using an emotional appeal due to the humor. Also, this is a testimony by a popular music artist that she uses Apple Music. I do believe that this had an effective message because the humor really appealed to the youth masses. This commercial went viral within hours. Really what better publicity can you get?

This emotion stuck throughout and does not change even after the ad is over. Most importantly, the use of comedy in this ad resulted in me remembering it, making it an effective advertisement. This Volkswagen Passat commercial uses ethos, pathos, and logos to make it such a successful advertisement. The ad uses these rhetorical strategies with different levels of effectiveness, however.
