Commercial Antacid Experiment

The objective of this laboratory experiment is to determine how effective a commercial antacid is. The known information about antacids is that they react with hydronium ions to relieve irritation. We can calculate and examine how the weak base from the tablet neutralizes the acid. The antacid tablet that is used in this experiment is TUMS. The two trials are designed to determine the average effect. The end result will be a compare and contrast of each trial to see the level of accuracy and what the overall experiment concludes.

Dr. William Beaumont developed the knowledge of gastric acid. When he was a surgeon in the United States Army, a man named Alexis St. Martin suffered a gunshot wound in the front region of his body. The impact caused Martins ribs to break, but more importantly his rib sliced open his …show more content…
The first step is to measure the mass of flask and about 0.20 grams of a crushed up TUMS tablet. Then add 25 milliliters of hydrochloric acid to the crushed up tablet that is dissolved in water. The outcome of adding more than enough acid is to eliminate the buffer and make the solution go from basic to acidic. During this reaction carbon dioxide gas is formed and to remove the gas, heat it on a mild boil for one minute. After being heated, all the moles of base react with the hydrochloric acid and what is left is the unreacted hydrochloric acid. This technique is referred to as a back titration. Before adding the sodium hydroxide, the solution needs to be clear or yellow meaning the pH is below 3.0. To check, add about 4 drops of bromophenol blue. When adding sodium hydroxide, as soon as the solution turns light blue that means the solution will then be mainly neutral and a little basic. The total outcome of this experiment is to see how successful commercial tablets are to a stomach when its acidic fluids are higher than usual, which typically is the reason for

...Title: Comparing the effectiveness of several Antacids Abstract: When using an Antacid, its a medication taken by the mouth. The purpose of this is to slow down the pain with acid indigestion. Antacids work together to neutralize excess stomach acid, which starts during the digestion process. Here are some common Antacids that was used in the lab: Rolaids, Maalox, and Tums. Some don't know that these antacids have at least one of these ingredients: aluminum, Calcium, magnesium, and sodium ( Directly on the back of the products). The aim of this experiment was to evaluate and test the effectiveness of antacids. Hypothesis: All antacid will not be equally effective because they all have different ingredients. Introduction: Within this experiment, the three different antacids was chosen: Maalox, Rolaids, and Tums. To get started we had to crush one antacid and add it to 100 ml of distilled water in a beaker. We did all three antacids separately, but made sure that all three antacids dissolved properly, meaning you don't see some on the bottom of the beaker. By using a stirring rod, stirring can help dissolve the antacids. We had to transfer the three different antacids into three separate test tubes with a pipet adding 5 mL of antacids solution. When we done this we then had to add 4 drops of bromcresol purple to the test tube. Bromcresol purple is a pH indicator. Then we had to add 0.1 M hydrochloric acid to the three test tubes, we had to mix after every drop. this...

Indigestion and Titration: an Acid-Base Titration

...first big assignment is to investigate the strength of several commercial antacids for the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). They have sent five antacids to be tested with a back-titration that works as follows: • • • First, each antacid tablet is mixed with 40 mL of 0.1 M HCl—this acidic solution is the same stuff that is in stomach acid, and one antacid pill is nowhere near enough to neutralize all 40 mL of the acid. So, to see how much extra help each antacid pill needs to neutralize 40 mL of 0.1 M HCL, you add 0.05 M NaOH drop-by-drop to back-titrate the solution until the pH is neutral. What this means is that, the stronger the antacid tablet, the less NaOH it will take to help bring the acid to neutral. (In other words, the stronger antacid tablets counteract more of the original HCl, leaving the solution closer to neutral before the NaOH is added.) Here are your results: Maalox Mass of one dose antacid mL NaOH used in backtitration 20.0 g Tums 21.0 g Mylanta 18.0 g CVS brand 18.3 g Rennies 17.5 g 24.1 mL 22.4 mL 20.0 mL 19.9 mL 24.4 mL 1. Which is the strongest antacid, on a single-dose basis? Which is the weakest? Explain and show your calculations. 2. Which are the strongest and weakest, on a by-weight (mass) basis? 3. When people do back titrations, they usually watch the solution for a color change when the solution becomes neutral. What might you have used in the above experiment to get this color change to happen in the solution? At what...

Alugbati Sigarilyas Bread

...CHAPTER 1 The Problem and Its Background Introduction One of the agricultural countries in Asia is the Philippines that wealthy when it comes to different varieties of vegetables, fruits and other edible crops that provide people the basic needs in life. But it is also a fact that some of these products cannot be improved due to lack of knowledge on how these products can be transform into food. Philippines have numerous crops and still not all aware of many different vegetables here thus they are not aware of the countless nutrients they can get from it. A remarkable nutrient that gives benefits that can improve one’s health. Since Philippines have been conquered by many races, it is possible to adopt some of their culture and one of the greatest impacts on us was the Spaniards. As the time goes by, Spaniards introducedsome of their food like the braso de marcedes, champorado, ensaymada, mechado, pan de sal, polvoron and many more. Filipinos inherited Pan de sal from the Spaniards who once colonized the country, but as the years passed Filipinos made some revisions and declared as our own. Way back 16th Century, the Spaniards introduced the breads that comes in rolls and served during breakfast. Spaniards trained Filipinos on how to make bread and until now, the techniques are still there. Pan de sal, which literally means “bread of salt”, is typical Filipino bread that is traditionally served as a breakfast roll. Pan de sal is made of flour, yeast, sugar and salt...

Hsc Chemistry Notes

...Chemistry Notes 2010 Core Module 1: Production of Materials Contextual Outline Humans have always exploited their natural environment for all their needs including food, clothing and shelter. As the cultural development of humans continued, they looked for a greater variety of materials to cater for their needs. The twentieth century saw an explosion in both the use of traditional materials and in the research for development of a wider range of materials to satisfy technological developments. Added to this was a reduction in availability of the traditional resources to supply the increasing world population. Chemists and chemical engineers continue to play a pivotal role in the search for new sources of traditional materials such as those from the petrochemical industry. As the fossil organic reserves dwindle, new sources of the organic chemicals presently used have to be found. In addition, chemists are continually searching for compounds to be used in the design and production of new materials to replace those that have been deemed no longer satisfactory for needs. This module increases students’ understanding of the implications of chemistry for society and the environment and the current issues, research and developments in chemistry. 1.1 Construct word and balanced formulae equations of all chemical reactions as they are encountered in this module: • Acid reactions: o acid (aq) + base (aq)  salt (aq) + water (l) o acid (aq) + active metal (s)  salt (aq) + hydrogen (g)...
