In his short story “ Powder,” Tobias Wolff narrates a childhood memory he had with his father during Christmas Eve. Unfortunately, his parents were separated. However, his dad still managed to spend time with him by going together skiing on Mount Baker. The common theme throughout the story is the strong relationship between a father and son. The adventures and obstacles through the story help the father and son to know more about each other. Eventually, Tobias learned from his father that although life has to be taken seriously we also have to enjoy it, as it was the last day of our lives. Therefore, Wolff demonstrates the importance of a father and how they naturally protect and guide their children’s life.
The story stared when Tobias father asked his “wife” to give his son permission to go skiing with him and promised her to take good care of him and bring him back for dinner on Christmas Eve. It’s an account of a boy and his father relationship. Although the roles of the boy and his father are opposite that what they are supposed to be, they prove to be entirely different. The father demonstrated his interest in proving his son that he cares about him. Therefore, he thought Tobias that there are moments in life where people don’t know what’s going to happen, so they have to take guesses or risks. Also, that people can be spontaneous and could try new things; they don’t have to be perfectionist. It is not okay though, to always be that worried- life type person who always overthinks life because is much better when people not only enjoys it, but also enjoys himself or herself.
