The beauty in literate and film is the ability of the artist to mold themes and motifs to fit unusual circumstances and even give them multiple layers. The skill of applying a common trope to not just one obvious character but many within the narrative allows the story to relate to the human experience on a deeper level. Perhaps the most commonly explored trope is that of “sins of the past” specifically their effect on several generations. Director Guillermo del Toro represent this theme in his movie Crimson Peak through not just one main character but two, as well as through other unsuspected ones. From the beginning we observe that they are an interesting set of characters with dark secrets and an unclean track record. This notion is verified early on when Edith’s father calls the two into his office and reveals to them that he has uncovered a piece of information that dampened his view of Thomas and Lucille. However, the audience is unaware of what exactly that bit of information is. As the narrative unfolds we follow Edith’s journey, when she learns something we learn something. Every time she uncovers a bit of truth about the twins we are able to see how it connects to their sins and how it negatively affects either them or someone else. For example, the first major bit of information that we learn is about their past. When Lucille reveals to Edith what their childhood was like, explaining that their father was abusive to their mother who in Lucille’s eyes was a horrid woman. The abuse of their father severely impacted Tomas and Lucille; leaving the two haunted by his actions and demented from the aftermath. The next piece of information that Edith runs into is the secrets of Thomas’s past wives. Edith uncovers the suitcase full of damning information about the previous women that Thomas has wedded and murdered. Learning of their scheme to acquire money from wealthy women with no ties move them to the countryside and poison them. While
