...Communicating and Collaborating Hannae Warren GEN/200 09 September 2011 Kim Maclin Communicating and Collaborating In order to communicate and collaborate effectively as a group, everyone needs to adapt to the other team member’s learning styles and personality types. Everyone is unique with how he or she learns and communicates. This paper will explore strategies to effectively communicate and collaborate within a group with team members that have logical/mathematical, interpersonal, and verbal learning styles, and organizer, giver, and thinker personality types. Logical/mathematical learners study or learn best by organizing material logically, developing systems and finding patterns, writing outlines and developing charts and graphs, and by analyzing the information. (Carter, Bishop, & Kravitz, 2007, p.44). They reason inductively, deductively, and scientifically, they are able to perform complex calculations, they are able to recognize abstract patterns, and discern relationships and connections. (Carter, Bishop, & Kravitz, 2007, p.43). This type of learner would be the best candidate to find the appropriate approach to the assignment that has been given to a team. They are apt to making lists, organizing, and making agendas. So who better than the logical/mathematical learner to begin the assignment process? They should also be the individuals to go over the assignment at the end to make sure there are no errors because they are able to find...

...Communicating and Collaborating with Different Personalities and Learning Styles ADVENTURER • Look for stimulating environments to work in. They prefer a learning team willing to express liveliness and fun. These will keep the adventurer’s mind sharp. • The more active the adventurer is while learning the better. Movement and hands on will keep this personality involved. The pace should be fast. • Do not be afraid to be experimental or even spontaneous. The adventurer thrives in these learning situations. If the subject matter is of special interest to this type, expect the product to be particularly remarkable. ORGANIZER • Well defined order and structure is the environment that best suits the organizer’s study environment. Libraries, tutor bars and home alone are ideal places for quiet and constructed learning. • Clearly outlining what the assignment is will help the organizer be prepared to move immediately forward without confusion. If they know exactly what is required of them, they will promptly start the task. • Communicate using precise wording. This type of personality prefers short, clear dialogues when learning. Do not muddle the conversation with rambling and digressing. GIVER • A person with this trait gravitates toward others. Be willing to work as a study group to receive the most input from a giver. • The giver appreciates sincerity. Express this characteristic and the giver will be receptive to the group and communicate openly. • An...

...I think I will have many obstacles to overcome when it comes to being successful during this course. As a working professional I think everyone can relate to the demanding schedules of a 9-5 job and career that certainly extends beyond the boundaries of just the office. More often than not I find myself working from home after my son is asleep or catching up on work during the weekends in order to make deadlines in time. In addition to the demands of a full time career, I also have my family that is the most important focus in my entire life. Family time takes place after work, on the weekends going out to dinner or taking our son to see a Smurf movie but also still finding time to connect with my wife and spend time with her as well. Juggling these things would be hard enough on its own but to make things even heavier I also have further obligations like volunteering coaching high school baseball and playing baseball on Sundays in a men's recreational team. I try squeeze things like working out during my lunch time at the office so that helps but needless to say all together my life is pretty hectic. With this being said I think my biggest obstacle will be finding a way to make school my priority while not taking the quality of time I spend on the other areas in my life. I have given a lot of thought as to how I may be able to accomplish this and I really believe that as long as I stay focused, structured, and driven at all my task then I should be able to continue meeting...

...thinks are culture, ethnicity, and gender. In addition, these factors can provide varying viewpoints. This paper identifies strategies for communicating and collaborating effectively in a group of individuals with different learning styles and personality types. The three types of learning styles I chose are Verbal – Linguistic, Interpersonal, and Logical – Mathematical. Verbal – Linguistic entails the ability to communicate through language that includes listening, reading, writing, and speaking. Interpersonal refers to possessing empathy for others, building rapport, and being social. Logical – Mathematical is having strong logical reasoning and problem solving skills (Carter, Bishop, & Kravits, 2007). The most effective method for communicating and collaborating within the category Verbal – Linguistic is to present information verbally or written. Other effective methods include analyzing information by being direct, asking open – ended questions, and seeking clarification (if necessary). The most effective method for communicating and collaborating within the category Logical – Mathematical is to present strictly organized information via maps, diagrams, pictures, or charts. Other methods include asking one challenging questions and providing “brain teasers” or puzzles. The most effective method for communicating and collaborating within the category Interpersonal is to present information through face-to-face contact, personal interviews or meetings, and social gatherings...

...Communication and Collaboration Strategy Bettia Blount University of Phoenix Effectively working together as a team to accomplish a given task can be a rewarding but challenging process. It is important that each member of the group is aware of the different personality types and learning styles within the team in order to understand where everyone is coming from. By being knowledgeable of the characteristics that make up the other learning styles and personality types, each member of the group will be able to develop a strategy to communicate effectively and collaborate with the other students in a group. After completing the Multiple Pathways to Learning and the Personality Spectrum assessments, I discovered that my learning style is that of a Visual-Spatial individual and my personality type is dominant as an Organizer. This information is vital as a student because I can use this knowledge to maximize my study habits/techniques while continuing my education. In addition to knowing what works best as a student, it is equally important to be aware of the other learning styles and personality types so I can work well with other students. In addition to the Visual-Spatial style of learning that I am dominant in, there are a number of other learning styles that may make up a group. These styles of learning include Verbal-Linguistic, Interpersonal, and Logical-Mathematical ways of learning. According to Carter, Bishop, & Kravits (2007), an individual dominant in...

...Communication and Collaboration Being part of a group can be challenging at times since each team member has his or her own learning style and personality. Each person differs when it comes to their learning style. Ones strength in one area might be the weakness of another’s. Knowing the different styles and personalities of each member will help the group to be more successful in communicating and collaborating. To help things run smoother within a group, professors and scientists have come up with many strategies to assist groups in communicating and collaborating effectively. According to Howard Gardner, “there are eight intelligences possessed by all people and that every person has developed some intelligence more fully than others” (Carter, Bishop, and Kravits, 2007). Three of these intelligences include interpersonal, intrapersonal, and verbal-linguistic. Each of these intelligences has positive and negative outcomes on each person. The interpersonal is more focused on those people who are excellent at creating and maintaining personal relationships. This learning style is based on more for those who are able to see things from the others perspective and have experience in cooperating within a group. The intrapersonal is more focused on those who are more independent, self-aware of things and enjoy spending time alone. They understand themselves better when it comes to relating to the others on the team. Verbal-Linguistic is yet another intelligence that is possessed...

...Communication and Collaboration Strategy Paper General Studies 200 Communication and Collaboration Strategy Paper To function effectively in a group of individuals you must develop strategies for communicating and collaborating within a group that have different learning styles and personality types. To do so you will need to know your own learning styles and personality types. My top three learning styles in order were: Interpersonal, Intrapersonal, and Verbal-Linguist. Interpersonal skills are often referred to as possessing people skills. Some skills related to the Interpersonal style are, seeing things from others’ perspectives, cooperating within a group, and communicating verbally and nonverbally. (Carter, Bishop, & Kravits, 2007, Key 2.2 How to put your Multiple Intelligences to work for you.). The one style that sticks out is seeing things from others’ perspectives. I can put myself in others’ shoes. To communicate effectively I know many factors go into making a person who they are; ethnic background, where they live, and how they were raised. When communicating and collaborating within a group I can understand different personalities and I am able to work supportively within in the group. My second learning style was Intrapersonal. The skills related to this style are: evaluating own thinking, being aware of and expressing feelings, understanding self in relation to others, and thinking and reasoning on higher levels. (Carter, Bishop, & Kravits, 2007, Key...

...Verbal/Linguistic, Visual/Spatial, and Bodily/Kinesthetic. Verbal/Linguistic learners have the ability to communicate through language. Their strengths include listening, reading, writing, and speaking. Visual/Spatial learners understand spatial relationships and can perceive and create images that assist with their understanding. Bodily/kinesthetic learners have the ability to take in information through bodily sensation. These three learning styles include the people whom learn best by hearing the material, seeing the material, or learning by doing. Each learning style brings its own challenge concerning communication and collaborating with individuals who have different learning styles. I believe the most important strategy in assisting communication is to become aware of the different learning styles that are present. The next step in communication and collaborating with individuals who have different learning styles is to listen critically. Listening with the intent to hear what the other person is trying to...

...Strategies for Communicating and Collaborating Effectively within a group J.D.P. Gen/200 1 February 2011 I have identified three different learning styles based on the findings from the multiple Pathways to learning Assessment. The three styles were Interpersonal, Verbal linguistic, and Bodily Kinesthetic. Interpersonal: The interpersonal learning style was the first one found during my assessment. These learners seem to communicate well, and can see things from someone else view point. They will cooperate in a group setting. My strategy for effective communication and collaborating would be to listen to what everyone has to say and take notes. Then discuss what was said and reflect on the information then give suggestions. I could take the lead on some assignments. Verbal linguistic: The verbal linguistic will learn by remembering terms. Explaining, learning, and using humor. The strategy for effective communication and collaborating would be to recite what’s discussed, rewrite notes. I could analyze the assignment for more understanding. Teach someone else, read the text outline chapters. Bodily Kinesthetic: The Bodily kinesthetic learning style will learn better by moving, walking and talking will open their thinking process. The strategy for effective communication and collaborating would be to move around, act out what’s being discussed. Use a mental map or draw diagrams or use figures to explain. Try...

...are useful in a particular cultural setting or community” (Carter, Kravits, Bishop, Block, 2007, p. 38). His belief is that every person in the world has at least eight intelligences, although some individuals develop those intelligences more than others. Three of those intelligences are verbal-linguistic, interpersonal, and intrapersonal. Verbal-linguistic is a person’s skill of communicating whether it is through reading, writing, talking, or listening. In a group setting, this type of individual would be able to teach or assist other team members if something is not understood. Their understanding of the language or word meaning comes easily. A person who is strongest in the interpersonal area would be able to collaborate and communicate either in written form or by speaking. This person would have good group communication skills. An individual with a strong strength in intrapersonal intelligence relies on his or her own thinking and has a better grasp of himself or herself in relation to other people. This type of person can think on a higher level. Communicating and collaborating can be difficult if an individual does not understand the dynamics of mixing multiple intelligences or personalities. One strategy to help overcome this is that everyone works on tasks in his or her strong areas. Typically, tasks are easier to complete because the understanding and willingness to put forth more effort is present....

...Chapter 1 THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING Background of the Study In any given classroom and school activity of relatively extended duration and complexity, students’ engagement is never homogeneously high and productive, but rather it fluctuates depending on a number of factors (Mcwayne et al., 2012; Mattingly et al., 2013) such as parental involvement (Ho & Williams, 2008; McNeal, 2009; Jose et al., 2010;). Students engage better in school when parents play a positive role in their learning process (Jackson, 2010; 2011; Green et al., 2012). Students are more likely to make a personal commitment to engage in rigorous learning when they know parents care about how well they do (Kilgore, Snyder & Lentz, 2008; Keyes, 2010). However, despite the crucial role of parents, studies in relation to their involvement remain scarce. Students’ low engagement with academic activities is considered the main reason for dissatisfaction (Kuh, 2009), negative experience, and dropping out of school (Linnenbrink&Pintrich, 2009; Jimmerson, Campos & Greif, 2010). One of the contributory factors is the level of parents’ positive interference to the academic journey of the school (Brookmeyer, Fanti&Henrich, 2008). More significantly, most findings show positive relationship between parental involvement and students’ engagement in school and in the classroom (Dauber & Epstein, 2008; Gorard, Rees &Fevre, 2009;Cotton, 2011;Fantuzzo et al., 2012). Nevertheless, the understanding...
