...proletariat.” (Marx 204) If there is a movie that represents exactly what Karl Marx said about society being split into two very drastic classes, it is The Hunger Games. Besides being one of the most popular trilogies of our time right now, The Hunger Games, represents a strict division of social classes and how after years of repression, the working class finally decides to come together and unite against the owners of the means of production. Karl Marx explains the clear difference between the bourgeoisie and the proletariats. The bourgeoisie are the ones who own the means of production and the proletariats are the ones who worked and did all the manual labor and whose hard work would only end up benefitting the bourgeoisie. In The Hunger Games, we see Marx’s representation of the bourgeoisie being the rulers of the two social classes, just like the people of the Capitol were, and the people in the districts were the proletariats. In The Hunger Games, the concept of family and unity is present to us because we see it through Katniss, Primrose, and her mother and as well as other families in the districts. There seems to be, however, no unity between all the districts. The only form of communication between them and the Capitol was for the exchange of goods and services. Likewise, the proletariats had no communication or business with the bourgeoisie other than anything having to do with the waged work they performed for them. Another major point that Karl Marx made...

...The media is use the primary means of mass communication regarded collectively. At best they are means to figure out the errors of society and the government. At their worst, they are tools used to dumb down society. George Orwell novel Nineteen Eighty-Four and Suzanne Collins’s The Hunger Games present an iconic vision of a dystopian future, where the media has an unprecedented amount of control of the masses. Those who control the media, controlled what the citizens know about history and current events. In George Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-four, the media was seen as a tool of oppressor, spreading the propaganda necessary to keep the totalitarian state alive and the party in power. The media worked by withholding information from its citizens....

...Ethical Decision: A Comparison between two Movies The realities and practicalities of the world present steady suggestions that run through different movies with respect to ethical decisions. Just as business concentrates on efficient ethical decisions models to strike a balance between making profits, satisfying customers, and achieving stakeholder’s needs, movie directors continue to identify the right combinations of ethical decisions that main characters have to follow through their actions and scripts to foster ethical conduct. Ethical decisions made have causes and effects, consequences, framed in context of how a movie with different scripts can achieve its highest-priority themes and guarantee positive ratings. A 2012 film, The Hunger Games, directed by Gary Ross and 2014 film, Divergent, directed by Neil Burger presents two ideal films focusing on the ethical decisions made by the main characters. This essay aims at identifying the causes and effects of ethical decisions made by the main characters, the impacts of these decisions, how these decisions affect the society. The movie, Divergent, revolves around a society with five different factions: Abnegation, Amity, Candor, Dauntless, and the Erudite. Members of ultramodern dystopian Chicago join any of the five groups based on their fondness but are, at first, given a proposition by an aptitude test. The group that controls the government, Abnegation, has brought up Beatrice Prior, the main character. Andrew, Prior’s...

...An Exposé of Control in The Hunger Games & V for Vendetta ‘Government is not the solution to our problem. Government is the problem’. Bill Clinton’s quote clearly articulates how Government seems to be the problem in society but fails to produce his rationale. Therefore his statement is ambiguous and is open to different thoughts and interpretation. Accordingly, a Government could be problematic due to a lack of justice and democracy within the system; which in turn creates a fascist and totalitarian-type rule whose fundamental belief surrounds the idea of ‘control’. This form of Government is evident within the novel ‘The Hunger Games’ by Suzanne Collins and the comic ‘V for Vendetta’ by Alan Moore. ‘The Hunger Games’ exposes the detriment of a corrupted, twisted, totalitarian Government controlling a deteriorated society. It is set in post-America with the ominous, terrifying Capitol reigning from the center, ruling 12 districts around it. Similarly ‘V for Vendetta’ is set in London in a world altered by the damages of war, famine and disease hence birthing a fascist, tyrannical Government inspiring fear and control over its citizens by any means possible. It is arguable that both ‘The Hunger Games’ and ‘V for Vendetta’ serve as exposé’s of their respective fascist and totalitarian Governments exerting different aspects of control over their societies. Within the ‘Hunger Games’, the all-powerful Capitol rules the society. They possess a large majority of the country’s wealth...

...Throughout the span of the Hunger Games trilogy, the morals and ethics of its characters are always under debate. Some argue that the actions partaken by their favorite characters are in self-defense and for the greater good of humanity, while others say that innocent District and Capitol citizens are treated as if they were disposable. One such character whose morals are less than ideal is Plutarch Heavensbee, President Coin’s right-hand man and the leader of communications for District 13. He is described as a man of vast intelligence, but his motives and ambitions are questionable at best. His view of the Hunger Games and the war is almost akin to a game of chess, where tributes and rebels are the pawns in his scheme to take down the “king”, President Snow. This moral ambiguity leads one to believe that Plutarch is an unethical character, no matter what his intentions are. In the beginning, Plutarch is portrayed as one of the masterminds of the rebellion. He displays his ties to the rebellion through a pocket watch with the mockingjay symbol, although Katniss does not realize the implications of his actions until much later. He is the Head Gamemaster of the third Quarter Quell, and works undercover for District 13 while feigning allegiance to the Capitol. During his time in the headquarters, he oversees the deaths of many tributes,...

...Simmons, A.M. (2012). Class on fire: Using the Hunger Games trilogy to encourage social action. The Journal of Adolescent and Adult Literacy, 56(1), 22-34. Abstract This article explores ways to utilize students’ interest in fantasy literature to support critical literacy. Focusing on Suzanne Collins's The Hunger Games series (2008, 2009, 2010), the author addresses how elements of the trilogy relate to violent acts in our world, helping student understand that violence and brutality toward children is not fiction, but very real, and that they can play a role in its abolishment, just like Katniss, through social action projects. Issues such as hunger, forced labor, child soldiers, and the sex trade that appear in both the fictional series and our world are discussed, encouraging students to assess their world and advocate for change. Examples of social action projects that utilize multiple literacies are suggested as a way to inspire students take action in the community and to stand up to injustice and brutality in hopes of creating a better world and a better human race. Using popular literature to pique student interest, this article explores how to incorporate the books in the Hunger Games series into the ELA classroom to support literacy and critical goals. ...INTRODUCTION Video games have come a long way since today's adults sat down at a computer to play Pong or Donkey Kong. The newest-generation gaming consoles are as powerful as personal computers, and can accomplish many of the same things. And today's games are increasingly realistic and technologically advanced. Social networking has even made its way into the video game industry with online gaming. These virtual worlds can be complicated and perplexing to parents, which is why it's important for you to understand what your child is playing and when to get worried. Did You Know? * In 2009, over 11 million people played World of Warcraft, an online, subscription fee-based multiplayer game. * According to one study, nearly 1 in 10 young gamers displayed behavior patterns similar to addiction.1 * The Kaiser Family Foundation found that 8- to 18-year-olds are exposed to an average of 10 hours and 45 minutes of media each day. Whether your child is an avid gamer or rarely picks up a controller, it's important to understand the world of video games--especially in the age of online gaming--so you can make your child's experience with games both a positive and a beneficial one. ————— 1. ...important primary goal of nursing is to facilitate the development of trust and to build upon a therapeutic relationship between the patient and members of the health care team. Demonstrating the skill(s) of effective communication is key. Assessment of a patient’s ability to communicate includes gathering information about the ‘contextual factors’ that influence communication itself. A context includes all the factors that influence the nature of communication and interpersonal relationships. This includes the patient’s internal factors and characteristics (psychophysiological) the nature of the relationship (relational) and the situation prompting communication (situational). Psychophysiological context refers to the patient’s internal factors and characteristics. First, monitoring some of the even basic physiological status such as pain, hunger and weakness. Second, paying attention to one’s emotional status and treating/preventing conflicts with anxiety, anger, hopelessness and even euphoria. Last but not the least, the growth & development status of the patient; simply not only looking only age but to the developmental tasks as well, perceptions/personality and the patient’s self-concept and self-esteem all play a vital role in communication itself.
