Communication is a necessity no matter where you are or what you are doing. This is even more so in the healthcare field. To do so, you must be able to be effective at communication and able to work with many obstacles on a daily bases. In this paper we will cover what effective communication is and what some of the obstacles that are faced in the healthcare field.
Basic communication is the ability to send and receive information, decoding the information, and giving feedback. Communication itself is the process of understanding and sharing. (Du Pre, 2005) So in order for it to be effective a person must first be able to send information and wait for the other person to be decode the information and respond to said information. That is only half of it; the sender must then be able to receive the information and process it and then once again give feedback. This is how we communicate. There are other factors that we must also take into consideration when we are communicating like body language and tone of one’s voice. If a doctor or patient has an elevated voice it can set the wrong tone and will only cause problems that can get in the way of a proper diagnosis. If a doctor comes into a room and slightly slams the door out of frustration it can put the patient on edge and will once again be a problem for proper diagnosis.
The basic elements of effective communication differ from the basic rules of health care communication because with healthcare communication it is more recognizable because it is joining all areas of the healthcare system. (Cickusic V, 2010) Doctors must be able to communicate with the nurse and aides in order to get the proper medicines distributed and he correct billing done. They also must be able to
