Communication Problems at Ozark Corporation

Sam Case and Paul Banks both work at Ozark Corporation and Sam is the lead supervisor for both Section A and B and Paul is the new supervisor for section A. These two men have to communicate on a daily bases to get both of their work done. When there is a problem Sam has to figure out how to deal with the situation, in this case Sam asked his section A supervisor Paul to take care of the problem in his section.

Sam needs to communicate exactly what he wants done in the problem section to help the supervisors under him know what need to happen. Sam should have been more specific on what needs to happen to get the work done, where if it is preventive maintenance, first then later after shift replacing and putting a new unit in. If Sam does not be specific than Paul the supervisor in that section would have to guess like he did to fix the problem.

This problem could have been prevented if Paul would have asked Sam exactly what to do after he found out what the problem was instead of just putting in a new control unit to fix the problem. Even though Sam said to fix the problem without helping instead of just saying fine after assigning him a duty. Both Sam and Paul need to be more open when it comes to listening to each other and not just agree or start and argument. In this case, the instructions were not as clear as they could have been and both Paul and Sam should have asked question like ” if the understood task” to make sure the both were on same page.

There are many different barriers that could happen in effective communication like: The use of jargon, emotional barriers and taboos, lack of attention- interest- distractions- irrelevance to the receiver, different in perception and view point, physical disabilities, physical barriers to non-verbal communication, language differences, expectations
