Key Communication Skills That Foster Effective Learning Teams

When discussing the effectiveness of learning teams the subject of successful communication skills becomes of paramount importance. Even outside of the classroom, many modern organizations allocate projects to teams which can vary in size from small to large. Regardless of the size of the team and the scope of the project, teams will only find success if individual team members trust each other, share a confidence in each other’s abilities, and share a mutual understanding of the team goals. These individual elements can only exist if the team itself practices and develops effective communication skills. To begin with, teams should always establish a successful communication strategy before any project is begun. To engineer an effective communication strategy, certain basic questions should be asked such as: * What, when, and how much will we communicate? – Establish the team goals, deadlines, and communication frequencies before a project has begun. * How will we communicate? – Establish a clear idea of how communications will be conducted, i.e. via discussion forums, e-mails, phone calls, etc. * What are our communication roles? – Identify who the lead is on a project and establish the fact that they will be the main facilitator of team communications (Hills, 2013). Now that the team understands how they will be communicating and who with, the project can begin. Once the project is underway, there are certain skills that will enhance the team experience and assist in facilitating communications between members. Some basic principles of successful team communications are: * Make sure communications are focused and clear – provide only as much information as is needed to understand and engage in your message. * Practice active listening
