...FUNDAMENTALS // Let’s Be Clear: How to Manage Communication Styles With all the talk about diversity and the ever-sopopular “four generations in the workplace,” it’s time for training professionals to not only focus their efforts on employees’ physical differences, but on their communication styles as well. By Jada Edmondson There are four basic communication styles: expressive, systematic, sympathetic, and direct. Our communication styles affect how others’ react to and perceive us. Knowing your communication style and knowing how to manage others’ communication styles can reduce conflict, increase productivity, and improve teamwork in the workplace. 30 | T+D | SEPTEMBER 2009 Generally, diversity training and seminars about generational differences seek to increase cultural awareness, reduce conflict, and promote teamwork. Being aware of cultural and generational differences can improve employee productivity, enhance the work environment, and contribute toward greater understanding of one another. Knowing how to adapt their communication styles to complement someone else’s style will enable employees to sustain productivity and create a harmonious work environment. Furthermore, recognizing your communication style can help you to understand how your actions are perceived by others. From the verbal style using pitch and tone to nonverbal cues of body language and touch. The nurse-client communicative relationship should reflect the caring nature embedded in our profession, to achieve positive outcomes of our work. Boggs (2011) states, effective communication has been shown to produce better health outcomes, greater client satisfaction, and increased client understanding. This paper will show communication styles from a personal perspective and three other scenarios within the healthcare setting. The discussion will focus on why communicating effectively is important in health care and how the outcome of these interactions could improve staff relations and impact patient care. A Personal Perspective: The clinic has six RNs and one aide, two teams came together due to a department merger. Moral was low, control was lost and as a result, an "us versus them" mentality became evident from the onset. Everyone was in passive aggressive mode on a daily basis. Everyone had strong personalities. The tension was palpable. The team was split in half and with no team spirit and no team efforts the problem has never been solved. Now conflict is a natural part of a human relationship; however, unresolved conflict interferes with success in meeting goals (Boggs...

...Four Styles of Communication Each person has a unique personality and communication style which plays a very basic role in their Personal Perspective, and all personalities are combinations of four basic personality types. This is commonly called the DISC profile. Here is how the DISC profile applies to effective communication. One of the best ways to quickly improve the effectiveness for one’s communication is to adapt matchable communication style, which goes with their personality as preferred. The following illustration can best describe the above statement. Research which began in the 1940s and continues today has revealed there are four major styles of communication. Some people combine two of these styles, but we all have a natural style of communication that we prefer to use. Our natural tendency in communicating is to use our own style because it is what comes naturally and automatically to us. But if we want to be effective communicators, we need to adapt our style to that of the other person. Here are the four styles of communication. The Controller The Controller is easy to spot because they just want the facts and nothing but the facts. Because of this, many times they can be perceived as bossy and insensitive. The Controller is extremely goal oriented and their major motivation is to get things done. They'll take a project and run with it. Many times they won't even have a plan when they begin. They'll just forge ahead with an attitude of "we'll figure...

...Communication and collaboration of three learning style and three personality types. Kara Smith GEN/200 February 14, 2011 Christina Nguyen Communication and collaboration of three learning style and three personality types. “What is effective for one learner may be ineffective for another.”(Honingsfeld and Dunn, 2006) Learning styles tell how to effectively process communication and personalities tell how to effectively collaborate among peers and others in the educational realm and in the employment field chosen for a career. It is important to recognize different learning styles and personality types, as equally as important as it is to recognize different ways to communicate and reach one common destination. A learning style that many have is a bodily-kinesthetic style; it is a style in which body part motions are used to process information. These people would rather use a direct, hands-on approach to communication as they are learning. When active, these learners retain material and have a better understanding as information is presented in an active way. These learners communicate best using hands-on; touch, possibly even flash cards. People who have strong, logical-mathematical skill will most likely be in positions in creating a combined approach for projects because their logical explanation and solving problems skills are very great. This individual’s skill set can help them be logically clear to other individuals on their team or in their group. With people...

...Communication Style Case Study Zenia Y. Bradley University of Phoneix Kristina Almus September 7, 2015 Introduction In this paper I will discuss three different case studies which were found the chapter reading. I will also discuss a scenario from my health care experiences. These case studies will vary in communication styles as it relates to delegating task to coworkers. Effective communication is a very important part of the delegation process. According to O’neil and Hasten (2009) the key to successful delegation is understanding, first, that delegation is an investment if time and energy that doesn’t always have immediate returns, and second that delegation is a skill which implies that it has discrete steps or components, that it requires practice to improve, and that repeated practice of it will facilitate improvement. Scenarios In the first case study we find Rashad an aid who I believe has every intention of doing what is right for the patient ,but has been basically shot down but the comment made by Robin. This causes him to shut down and basically destroys the relationship between the two. Robin a RN whom I believe has the best interest of the patient at heart does not communicate very well with others she is a very aggressive and should tone it down a bit if she plans to have a successful relationship with the entire healthcare team. In the second case study we find Pamela who displays a passive or nonassertive communication style by not addressing the...

Write a 150- to 200-word e-mail to your friend summarizing the resources available to students. I would share the fact of they have a write point grammar which corrects your paper for misspelled words, punctuation, accidentally confused words. Sometimes you might be to still writing casual writing instead of academic writing. Then they have review plagiarism writing so you can check your paper for that. Then they have a 3week orientation so you will learn all about online school instead of just jumping into it and being confused. They teach you all about loans and what you should take out and what you should not. A time management makes you have time for school and how to manage things like work and kids. What you should do if you are a procrastinator or even if you get bored with school like I do sometimes. Write a 150- to 200-word e-mail to your friend summarizing the resources available to students. Hey, how are you? I’m just getting into my very first week at the University of Phoenix. This week hasn’t been too hard, but I have gotten to learn a lot about the resources that I can use to help me though these online classes. It’s actually pretty cool to be able to go to class online and still have so much there to help me get though it if I need any help, if it’s just with some tutoring I need help, or just sending a paper in to see if I have used my grammar, and punctuation correctly. Then there is also a place that I can even send in my paper that will check and make sure that there is no plagiarism, I think that’s a great thing, because sometimes you might have just forgot that you used some information from somewhere, and if you can get it checked than you can just save yourself from a failing grade. It’s really a great school to go too, they have all the tools that can help you and make sure that you succeed. You asked your facilitator to review your e-mail draft. Hi John, I just wanted to send you this e-mail to let you know what I have learned about the University of Phoenix in the last few days. The online learning system is a great tool. It has a Center for Writing Excellence that you can submit your papers to and it will show you what corrections need should be made. There is also an online library with lots of useful articles and links, as well as a Center for Math Excellence. ...Different Styles and Communication in the Workplace Mary Ward Organizational Communications Professor Frank Prihoda As people grow up and enter the work environment they come to realize the many cultures and style amongst their co-workers. We first need to understand the concept of communication style and its effects on interpersonal relations. Once we understand the concept than we can realize the benefits that we can derive from understanding of communication styles. We can define communication styles by the way people received impressions on how we present ourselves to them and our actions toward them. The person that we are communicating to doesn’t know what are inter most thoughts or feelings, so they have to judge us by our appearance and how we present ourselves. “Each person has a unique communication style. By getting to know your style, you can achieve greater self-awareness and learn how to develop more effective interpersonal relations with coworkers. Accurate self-knowledge is truly the starting point for effectiveness at work. It is also essential for managing the three key relationships: relationships with self, with another person, and with members of a group. If your career objective is to become a supervisor or manager, you will benefit by being more aware of your employees’ communication styles. Job satisfaction and productivity increase when employees feel that their leaders understand their personal needs and take these into consideration.” (Gates...
