The holistic view of communication
The holistic view of communication means to consider the whole picture of communication, which means to consider not only the words but also every other supportive and unintentional element (conventional dimension) that contributes to a better understanding of the message and helps to get the message across, such as kinetics, haptics, proxemics, facial expression, gesture, verbal and non-verbal communication, one- and two-way communication, pitch and context etc.

Decoding versus encoding
Sender (encoder) - channel - (decoder) receiver
Communication is a process in which the sender intends to forward a message to the receiver
The sender encodes his or her message by making use of language and transmits it through an adequate channel e.g. the air (face-to-face), by using a telephone, writing a letter etc. The receiver decodes the transmitted message by reading or listening and simultaneously transforming it into information
encoding is the process of transferring the information the sender wants to communicate into a suitable form that can be sent and correctly reinterpreted at the other end
decoding is the process of receiving and understanding the message right
If both processes are not accomplished properly, this means the sender is not able to communicate his or her thoughts and ideas effectively and the receiver does not listen actively or does not have enough knowledge to understand the message, then the whole process can be fraught with problems, which can lead to misinterpretation and confusion. Communication is only successful when both sides, the sender and the receiver, understand the same message as a result of communication.
