In a health and care setting, there are different forms that can be used to communicate. These include:
• Verbal communication
• Non-verbal communication
• Written communication
• Technological aids
• Alternative forms of communication
Below, we will be looking at each of the above in more detail and providing real examples to demonstrate how each are used in a Health and Social Care setting- Lewisham Care Home.

1. Verbal Communication
Verbal communication is an act of conveying messages, ideas, or feelings through the use of mouth-orally and composes of the use of words, sound, speaking and language either by talking face-to-face when talking to others, on a telephone or as when presenting a speech to a group of people and generally involves one person talking and the other listening.
As carers, when you are communicating verbally, you need to ensure that pronunciation, stress and tone of the voice with which the words are expressed is appropriate as otherwise the message might be misunderstood by the person you are trying to communicate with.
Ways in which verbal communication is used in this care home include:
a) Communicating with other members of staff and colleagues e.g. if a service user is on medication, you can exchange the information and discuss the care plan and what needs to be done in reference their needs.
b) Communicating with family members and friends of service users e.g. when discussing user’s condition and treatment/care plan.
c) Participating in staff meetings and sharing experiences or voicing opinions.
d) Answering questions asked by both service users and staff.
e) Ability to re-assure service users when they need comforting, asking about their condition or if you need some information from them.
f) In staff meetings at times carers maybe asked to do presentations so this would be essential in
