Application/Analyzation of the Communicative Theory Among other concepts, when Greenpeace is analyzed with the communicative theory in mind, it would appear that they do a fairly good job with respects to phenomenological actions, as well as language and discourse. From a communicative approach when thinking about a nonprofit like Greenpeace being able to look at their phenomenological or lived experiences only makes sense. As Koschmann says in his article “Developing a Communicative Theory of the Nonprofit” If we start from the assumption of “nonprofit” as a financial/legal category, then we have already accepted the terms of economic theorizing and are left with studying communication as a phenomenon within these given organizational structures. Instead, what we know and experience as “nonprofit” is a socially constructed concept that is reinforced (or not) through continued patterns of communication.” (Koschmann, …show more content…
Greenpeace does this well through their many campaigns. They take on the common goal of re-orienting the masses through many different processes when it comes to humans and their relationship to the environment. As a representative of Greenpeace said in an interview “We are very much involved first hand in many of our campaigns and issues…We stage many protests and marches, as well as hang banners on smokestacks, skyscrapers, intercept whaling vessels, just to give some examples of our lived experiences” (A. Caravas, personal communication, February, 26, 2015). One of the most prime examples that shows just how Greenpeace is actively committed to lived experiences is through their Act for the Arctic Campaign. Abstract: This study examines what drives organizational adoption and use of social media through a model built around four key factors – strategy, capacity, governance, and environment. Using Twitter, Facebook, and other data on 100 large US nonprofit organizations, the model is employed to examine the determinants of three key facets of social media utilization: 1) adoption, 2) frequency of use, and 3) dialogue. We find that organizational strategies, capacities, governance features, and external pressures all play a part in these social media adoption and utilization outcomes. Through its integrated, multidisciplinary theoretical perspective, this study thus helps foster understanding of which types of organizations are able and willing to adopt and juggle multiple social media accounts, to use those accounts to communicate more frequently with their external publics, and to build relationships with those publics through the sending of dialogic messages.
