My community family consists of an African American marriage male and female for over 5 years with a pregnant young adult, 2 teenagers a male and female, toddler and preschooler. As you can see there are many vulnerable populations in this family; cultural, teenager, health, children and pregnancy.

...Running head: COMPARISON PAPER Comparison Paper Epidemiology: Global and Public Health NUR408 October 11, 2009 Comparison Paper Public and community health nursing are specialty areas that have been and will continue to be practiced and each having a specific area of focus. Research has indicated that many individuals tend to see each entity as one and have a misconception that public and community nursing is one in the same (Stanhope & Lancaster, 2008). The misconception is just that, a misconception. In the reading to follow, each area will discussed and one will be able to see the similarities and differences, the history and development and the role that is expected from each area of expertise. Although each specialty works within its main area of focus, the two also work closely together for the good of the individuals within the public and community sectors. Community Health Nursing Reflection

...Community Health Nursing Reflection NUR/405 Cynthia Januale Community Health Nursing Reflection This assignment was very interesting and unique compared to other assignments that I have had in the past. Visiting and studying the community that I chose gave me quite the insight on various issues that, had it not been for this assignment, I may not have picked up on before. “In any setting, the role of public health nurses focuses on the prevention of illness, injury or disability, the promotion of health, and maintenance of the health of population” (The Role Of Public Health Nurses, 2012, para. 2). In the community I chose to survey, as with any community, the role of community nursing focuses on the items listed above and in addition, I believe that because of the lower to middle income level of this community, focus should also be on better health care accessibility to the residents. Community Nursing Diagnosis’ and Interventions Three possible community nursing diagnoses for the community that I observed were as follows. Risk for accidents related to the poor vision by oncoming traffic as evidenced by the multiple cars lining the streets. Children and others are walking to and from the store and through the neighborhood to the park where they play and oncoming traffic may have difficulty seeing pedestrians because of the amount of cars parked on the side of the road. Possible interventions for this problem include wearing reflective clothing so that they...

Review of Literature

...Health Promotion Deanna Caswell Family Centered Health Promotion March 3rd, 2013 Health Promotion Health promotion has a variety of definitions. One being as simple as, a science and art that assists people to change lifestyle toward a state of optimal health (O’Donnell, 1997), to more complex as a process of advocating health to increase the chance that personal, private , and public support of positive health practices will become a societal norm” (Kreuter & Devore, 1980, p. 26). Despite the variances in definition health promotion is geared towards persuading public the benefits of a living a lifestyle free of negative health behaviors. The purpose of health promotion in nursing practice is to switch gears from protection of certain diseases to focus on improving the general health of the people they serve. Health promotion has changed the roles and responsibilities of nurses. Increasing demands are placed on nurses as healthcare has shifted from an acute, hospital-based care to preventive, community-based care. The home is now the primary place healthcare takes place. Reimbursement for hospital care is less resulting in shorter stays. Nurses must take on additional roles and play a bigger part of disease prevention and health promotion. A greater emphasis is being placed on nurses being more independent in their practice. Nurses are expected to be increasingly accountable morally and legally for their behavior. Nursing has evolved into many roles as advocates...

A Critical Incident of Occupational Health Learning Development: Fit Testing of Respiratory Protective Equipment Face Masks

...A Critical Incident of Occupational Health Learning Development: Fit Testing of Respiratory Protective Equipment Face Masks Introduction On my second day of my Occupational Health placement, I was given the opportunity to be part of a meeting with the Occupational Health Manager, two Ward Managers and and one Modern Matron to discuss fit testing of respiratory masks. During discussions, it was felt that there were not adequate numbers of staff trained as this could leave the Trust at risk in terms of staff protection. I decided that this would be my critical incident. This critical incident would follow Rolfe’s et al. (2011) model of reflection, including aspects of education and opportunistic learning. The importance of this incident has reinforced the point that one of my Learning Objectives would not only further my knowledge in Occupational Health skills, but will work with others to protect the public’s health, and wellbeing from specific risks (PGDip SCPHN Handbook,2014). As this challenge was prompted by a critical issue, good communication skills with resilient working relationships were utilised if to incur change. Further actions would entail task structuring and team and individual management. These are reflections of Action Centred Leadership (Adair, 1973). Names and places were excluded to maintain confidentiality as required by the Nursing Midwifery Council Code of Conduct (NMC, 2008). During the week, an acute care unit experienced what they perceived...

...reflective practice and enhance the delivery of care in district nursing practice. Barbara Brush Student number: B00628470 Word count: 2084 Due Date: 3rd February 2015. Introduction. Due to the increasing demands on the Health Service the “Transforming your care “ report (Department of Health Social Service and Public Safety, (DHSSPS) 2011a) made recommendations to increase care in the community, making home the centre of care aiming to reduce the strain on limited resources and give value for money. Within the community care district nurses are vital, there role is autonomous, unique and varied. Furthermore there expert theory, skills, and knowledge of self and practice adds to their advanced interpersonal communication skills to assess clients with increasing complex needs (Blazor et al 2008). Communication is the cornerstone of the nurse patient therapeutic relationship and is the essence of good care (Stein-Parbury, 2009). Within the community care setting, therapeutic relationships are a high priority of the health service to enhance the well-being of the growing ageing population and patients with complex palliative care needs (Bain and Baguley 2012). The Department of Health (2006) acknowledges that communication is paramount for human interaction, otherwise people cannot relate to others effectively, make their needs known and identify what is happening to them. A fundamental aspect for district nursing staff is to ensure the whole family unit is included in the...

Community Health Nursing Reflection

...Community Health Nursing Reflection NUR/405 August 7, 2012 Community Health Nursing Reflection According to Phyllis Meadows (2009), “Community health nurses are valued for their adaptability and willingness to provide care in many settings, including community health clinics, churches, homeless shelters, and schools,” (p. 19). Community health nurses aim to improve health outcomes and improve the infrastructure used to monitor and manage disease within the community. Healthy People 2020 has established benchmarks and monitored progress over time to improve health outcomes. Each community has unique needs and the role of the community health nurse is to work with and provide comprehensive care to patients within the community. This reflection addresses the role of the community health nurse with the participating family and their community in Spring Mills, Pennsylvania. Windshield Survey Summary

...Windshield Survey Summary and Reflection Kysa Douglas, RN NUR/405 November 10, 2014 Sybil Meadows, MSN, BSN, RN Windshield Survey Summary and Reflection There are many different definitions for what a community is. The one I find most appropriate is from the World Health Organization (WHO). They provide the following definition: “A group of people, often living in a defined geographical are, who may share a common culture, values and norms, and are arranged in a social structure according to relationships which the community has developed over a period of time. Members of a community gain their personal and social identity by sharing common beliefs, values and norms which have been by the community in the past and may be modified in the future.” (Stanhope, 2012) According to Stanhope community health is “the meeting of collective needs by identifying problems and managing behaviors within the community itself and between the community and the larger society.” (Stanhope, 2012) The community becomes the client when the focus of the nurse is on the collective or common good of the population rather than a single patient. The nurse may care for individuals or families, but the resulting changes in health are intended to affect the community as a whole. Even if direct nursing care is provided to an individual, if their health needs are a common community-related problem, it is still considered community health. With the community as the client, decisions are made...
