The community based long-term care services include a variety of personal care, healthcare, and other supportive services, provided to clients in their own homes, or in their community. The community-based setting helps people with less money, for example, in the case of someone not having a great retirement or someone who cannot afford a better structure. For instance, being in an assisted living or an adult day care while being also more independent is a great alternative. Furthermore, it is less of a financial burden for the social security program. Poverty definitely reduces access to healthcare, then people tends to connect with the insurance company to pay for hospital visits. Also, it is often linked with structural like racial, institutional, unmet need. Mentally is better because the person feels better being independent so mostly if you have money you get better choices, better coverage for health insurance. There is a lot of research done on the role of race/ethnicity in long-term care which focuses on nursing home and home care services. Less attention has been paid to other forms of long-term care, including adult day care and assisted living, due to the relative newness of these services and the smaller proportion of public resources expended on such services. Accordingly, this brief review focuses on nursing home and home care

The differences between the nonprofit and for profit hospitals will be discussed. Hospitals have experienced different trends in the last thirty years. This paper will identify at least three major trends that have occurred within the hospital sector. Three examples that describe and differentiate the roles of hospitals and nursing homes are providing long-term care. The conclusion of this paper will be a brief critiquing of the current state of long-term care policy in the United States. Hospitals and Long-Term Care Facilities Describe the differences between nonprofit and for-profit hospitals. A characteristic as stated by Williams and Torrens (2008) of nonprofit hospitals is that these hospitals do not function under the realm of regular corporate law but under a special provision of the corporate law in each state. It is also noted that nonprofit hospitals also function under special federal and state tax provisions because of recognition of their community service function. Other characteristics of nonprofit hospitals are they do not have owners and their governing body is a community based board that has complete authority over operations. Nonprofit hospitals, in general, are not required to pay most of the taxes at federal, state...

Building Safe and Healthy Society

...This review essay is based on the report “Building Safe, Active Communities: Strong foundations by local people”, the third report written by Baroness Helen Newlove, the Government’s Champion for Active, Safer Communities (Newlove, H, 2012). The report covers issues in areas of community safety, voluntary and community sector as well as community engagement. In Baroness Newlove’s view, “local people are the foundations for safe, active communities”. (Newlove, H, 2012). The report, which highlighted various case studies from different communities, is aimed at offering advice, know-how and a map for grassroots activists to follow, which will bring new ideas that have been proven to work. In essence the report called for a change of culture so neighbourhoods no longer see crime, antisocial behaviour and disorder as someone else’s problem. Furthermore, this review essay will highlight how the policy report engages with the ideas and concept of community as discussed in Book 3 of DD208. It will show how the report draws on evidence and constitutes evidence itself. This review will also reflect the entanglement of community, social welfare and crime control concerns as well as responses to the same. Baroness Newlove was appointed the government’s Champion for Active, Safer Communities in October 2010 and has since then worked with communities across the country to discover the needs and wants of grassroots activists. She highlighted the progress in her first two reports and also...

Major Problems Facing Hospitals Today

...Trends ------------------------------------------------- Exam 2 ------------------------------------------------- Essay Questions – Turn in by midnight Tuesday, February 25, 2014 via www.turnitin.com Each question should be answered with 2-4 paragraphs for maximum credit. Answer the question (which may be your opinion) and then substantiate your answer. 1. Discuss the major problems facing hospitals today. Offer some possible solutions to each of these problems. Some of the major problems that face hospitals today include; cost increases, bed surpluses, and the overemphasis of specialized care vs. primary care. Cost increases for hospitals are caused by several different factors. According to a report by the American Hospital Association, labor cost accounts for more than half of hospitals’ total expenses. This number grew by between 5 to 8% a year from 2002 to 2009. Another issue effecting hospitals is the growth in patients covered by Medicare and Medicaid. These patients represent 60% of all admissions. These programs do not pay the full cost of care. The AHA claims the amount each program pays has decreased significantly year after year. Patients unable to pay for care amount to about 6% of hospitals’ cost. To me a universal health care system would definitely assist in this problem. If everyone paid a portion for the same health care, then costs would not rise so high. Bed surpluses are detrimental to healthcare for several reasons. First, money is invested...

Adn vs. Bsn Nurses

...graduates with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree. In 1951, Mildred Montag proposed the innovative idea of a 2-year Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) program at the community college level to remedy the severe nursing shortage following World War II. Nursing faculty regarded ADN nurses as competent in basic nursing practice as they demonstrated the ability to pass state nursing licensing examinations. This commenced the national ADN educational movement followed by public confusion regarding the credentialing requirements and competencies of a professional nurse (Creasia & Friberg, 2011). Over the past 40 years, the entry-level education and qualifications for nursing have been widely debated by the medical community (Institute of Medicine, 2011, p. 169). This essay serves to provide a comparative view of registered nurses prepared at the associate and baccalaureate levels, detailing the specific competencies of each. According to the Institute of Medicine, the ADN “prepares nurses to provide direct patient care and practice within the legal scope of professional nursing responsibilities in a variety of health care settings” (2011, p. 44). This includes the utilization of critical thinking in patient assessment and the implementation of interventions based on the individual plan of care and physician’s orders. Additionally, that ADN nurse is responsible for collaboration with other disciplines and patient advocacy. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics...

Identify and Explore a Contemporary Debate About Community Development.

...contemporary debate about community development. It is evident that existing literature highlight the complex nature of the concept of ‘community development work’. It is also true to say that there are constant changes in the political setting, and the disparity between theory and practice for community development work. To begin, this essay will attempt to define the key concepts of ‘community’ and ‘community development’ in order to understand the process. It will then explore the role of community development programs in aiding local communities to exercise control over the issues that affect their lives, in this case, the refugee women community in UK. Finally, it will also discuss about the role of critical practice in tackling the issues of social justice, such as social exclusion, poverty and inequalities. Community development is a very complex field and before attempting to define it, it is imperative to explain the meaning of ‘community’, which is in itself a contested term (Shaw, 2007). Different perspectives have been presented to define the term, for example Smith (2001) argues that ‘…some [definitions] focused on geographical area; some on a group of people living in a particular place and others which looked to community as an area of common life’. Again, according to Stacey, ninety four definitions of ‘community’ were given (Stacey, 1969 cited in Craig et al., 2008, p.14). Consequently, it becomes problematic to give a precise meaning of ‘community development work’...

Essay Debate

...The purpose of this essay is to define the term debate and to explore the educational strategy in the development of knowledge, skills and attitudes required to deliver and manage patient care. The topic was due to financial considerations advancement of acute and critical care should be or not curved. In this essay will summarise the key points made by the proposition and opposition with the support of evidence and will explore the relative strengths and weakness of both arguments. It will also discuss whether this has changed in light of debate. Debate is a formal argumentation between two teams or individuals. It is also an essential tool for developing competencies and maintaining freedom such as, controversial issues without descending to insult, emotional appeals, or personal bias (Garreth, et al, 1996). The key trademark of debate is that it rarely ends in agreement, but rather allows for robust analysis of the question at hand (Sather, 1999). Perhaps this is what French philosopher Joseph Joubert meant when he said. “It is better to debate a question without settling it, than to settle a question without debating it.” Debating may be considered as an educational strategy in the development of knowledge. It allows a person to find out if they have a good understanding and also by answering questions from of the audience. The students will enhance the critical thinking through debating process, however, DeYoung (1990) suggest that debating helps students develop the...

Social Investment

...has its origins in socioeconomic deprivation or long-term psychosocial issues, it is easy for both patient and GP to feel overwhelmed and reluctant to open what could turn out to be a can of worms. Settling for a short-term medical fix may be pragmatic but can easily become a conspiracy of silence which confirms the underlying sense of defeat. Can or should we try to do more during the precious minutes of a GP consultation? Where there are psychosocial issues GPs do suggest social avenues, such as visiting a Citizens Advice Bureau for financial problems, or a dance class for exercise and loneliness, but without a supportive framework this tends to be a token action. The big picture difficulty with leaving underlying psychosocial problems largely hidden in the consulting room is the medicalisation of society’s ills. This ranges from using antidepressants for the misery of a difficult life, to the complex pharmaceutical regimes prescribed to patients with obesity and type 2 diabetes. This sort of medicalisation may help immediate problems (including driving the economy through jobs in the healthcare industries) but it is not enough if our society is to have a sustainable future. Another way of looking at this is in terms of choice. The consumerist type of choice of provider beloved of the government, is what Canadian philosopher Charles Taylor calls ‘weak evaluation’.1 By this he means a utilitarian ‘weighing-up’ of generally short-term consequences of a choice. These choices represent...
