Introduction
In a male dominated field, identifying women who lead community colleges can be a rare find. According to Weisman and Vaughan (2006), females represent 29% of CEO positions at community colleges. Women in leadership roles often face the daunting task of combating serotypes in regards to their ability to lead. Women are not traditionally viewed as serving in the capacity as community college presidents, and therefore community colleges could be viewed as being gendered organizations.
For this assignment, I selected a female community college president. The experiences that I had with the community college president are from several encounters that we have had overtime. The nature of her job and the recent notice of the realignment process of the institution made it difficult to shadow her for one complete day. For this project, I decided to focus on the, her leadership style, perspective of her relationship with governing board and some of her experiences as a …show more content…
Dukes not only provides an outstanding service to college but she is also an active member in civic engagement in the surrounding community. According to Corrigan (2002), civic engagement promotes everything values, and embraces a movement for transforming both students and communities. By participating in these activities, she is showing the importance of leaders building relationships with the communities they serve. In addition, her participation shows the community that she is vested in their sustainability and future. Dr. Dukes leadership model can be identified as multidimensional Eddy (2010), states that “unlike traditional leadership models, a multidimensional model of leadership provides flexibility and a construction based on an individual’s core experiences, beliefs, and capabilities” (pgs. 32). Because of her personal experiences and expectations, she is able to adjust her leadership style to adjust to growth and adhere to the needs of the

...Communities with Strong Leadership This essay discusses an assumption that communities accept us for who we are. There are several ideas concerning community values and that strong leadership is needed to support this claim. Researching this idea with a book titled Remix Reading & Composing Culture. I read short essays, and a commencement address from this textbook. The passages tie into my belief of strong leadership having to be linked to the assumption that communities accept us for who we are. I explored these essays, and commencement address to support my views in a creative way. An essay titled “It Takes a Tribe” speaks of college life and fraternities. The commencement address by John Stewart is comical. Another essay I enjoyed speaks...

...REGENT UNIVERSITY The Understanding and Practice of ServantLeadership Servant Leadership Research Roundtable – August 2005 Larry C. Spears President & CEO The Greenleaf Center for Servant-Leadership The servant-leader is servant first. It begins with the natural feeling that one wants to serve. Then conscious choice brings one to aspire to lead. The best test is: do those served grow as persons; do they, while being served, become healthier, wiser, freer, more autonomous, more likely themselves to become servants? —Robert K. Greenleaf The mightiest of rivers are first fed by many small trickles of water, and an apt way of conveying my belief that the growing number of individuals and organizations practicing servant-leadership has increased from a trickle to a river. Servant-leadership is also an expanding river, and one which carries with it a deep current of meaning and passion. The servant-leader concept continues to grow in its influence and impact. In fact, we have witnessed an unparalleled explosion of interest and practice of servant-leadership in the past fifteen years. In many ways, it can truly be said that the times are only now beginning to catch up with Robert Greenleaf’s visionary call to servant-leadership. The idea of servant-leadership, now in its fourth decade as a concept bearing that name, continues to create a quiet revolution in workplaces around the world. This article is intended to provide a broad overview of the growing influence this inspiring...

...Three Pillars Essay Camrron Anderson Grand Canyon University: UNV-504 04/06/2016 Three Pillars Essay Camrron Anderson Grand Canyon University: UNV-504 04/06/2016 On March 10, 2016 I embarked on a journey to continue my education and obtain a Masters’ level degree from Grand Canyon University. This has been a goal that I have set for myself since the completion of my undergraduate degree in 2012. I know that in order for me to continue to build myself professionally a graduate degree is extremely necessary. A Master’s degree will not only qualify you for more advanced career opportunities and increase salaries but it will also allow one the opportunity to completely immerse one’s self in a specific area of study. After the completing of my master program I hope to continue to progress along the professional ladder in the Healthcare industry. My dream job would be to work in a position where I would be able to directly affect patient care and experience without having to be clinical. To me this position would best be suited in patient advocacy or even patient relations. In either of these departments I would have the ability to work directly the community that we serve by listening to concerns, answering questions, and providing the necessary help and care to anyone who enters the facility. These departments are also culturally and religiously sensitive to the growing populations and demographics that contribute to the community in which they serve. In...

...ESSAY: THREE PILLARS OF THE KEN BLANCHARD COLLEGE OF BUSINESS Jakes Chege Grand Canyon University: UNV 504 June 10, 2014 Three Pillars of the Ken Blanchard College of Business Ken Blanchard College of Business consists of three pillars which act as a guide to anyone that pursues academic excellence through this faculty. They are found via video and there are a few articles that touch on their content and they are available in the Grand Canyon University school library. Ken Blanchard is a renowned writer and one of the founder members of Ken Blanchard Group of companies who has sold over 80 million hard copies of his books detailing on global leadership, entrepreneurship, innovation and servant leadership. I will be examining and discussing each of the three pillars in this essay and binding them with the findings I gathered from articles in topic 3 of this course. Servant Leadership The mission of Ken Blanchard College of Business is to develop a servant who by developing business skills and values not only can run businesses well but can also make difference in the community and in the world at large. According to Blanchard (2011), servant leadership is the foundation that sets up innovation and entrepreneurial spirit. These leadership skills in these servants will not only impact their homes, communities but can change the world. Blanchard (2011) continues to state that the servant Leadership has two parts in itself which encompasses the whole meaning. They...

...College Fraternities College Fraternities College fraternities have always struck me as being an organization of guys who spend their time drinking beer and having their "social gatherings" (parties). Just moving to Austin recently (which is by no doubt a "college city") has made me want to know more about the sole purpose of these fraternities. For these reasons I chose to select this culture for my essay. The definition of a fraternity is defined as " chiefly social organization of male college students, usually designated by Greek letters". (Morris 1982:523) This definition is not true to all where most fraternity members are seen as drunks who accomplish nothing scholastically or socially . Unfortunately, the definition and portrayal of the people fails to mention the fact that membership in a fraternity is a life-long experience that helps its members develop social, organizational, and study skills , and also teaches true, everlasting friendship. As a matter of fact most of our presidents were members of a Greek organization. "The first fraternity was founded for literary and social purposes at The College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia on December 5th 1776." (Klepper 1937:24) Throughout the nineteenth century many new fraternities were founded, but none of these were permanent. By the end of the nineteenth century there were over thirty general fraternities in the country. Today's fraternities still have the characteristics ...

With the increasing complexity of health information and health care settings, most people need additional information, skills, and supportive relationships. Societal expectations of health care professionals are rapidly changing and increasing. Society has high expectations of health professionals, expecting them to provide leadership roles in the community. In addition to societies’ expectations of leadership, universities expect faculty to demonstrate leadership in a scholarly manner. Therefore, all this set of principles applies in any of the fields of business (marketing, finance…) and people inevitably face ethical decisions in their every day working lives. The aim is to make every employee adhere to these standards because obviously, it is more profitable for a company to be ethical in business. But, as ethical issues are linked to decision-making, how can all decisions be ethical and above all whose responsibility is it? Therefore, we could wonder if business ethics is a personal responsibility or a group responsibility. We are going to divide this essay into two parts, the thesis and the antithesis, in order to determine whether or not business ethics is a personal responsibility.
