...B1. Community I did my study for this assignment in Stokes County, North Carolina which is where I recently moved to from Iowa. Stokes County is made up of several small towns but King, which is where I live, is the largest town. Stokes County is in the middle northern part of the state near the Virginia border, a mountain chain, and a lot of wilderness. Some of the towns are incorporated and some are not and a few only claim to be villages. Using the Population Economic Status Assessment, I looked at the State & County Quick Facts last revised: Feb-2015 and found that the county population is at about 46,588. The Caucasian population makes up 93.8% of the population, African American 4.4%, Hispanic 2.7%, and the remainder is 1.1%. The average annual income in the year 2011 was about $21,000. In Stokes County 14.3% of its families live below the poverty level compared to the state rate of 16.1%. Public assistance must be applied for through North Carolina’s Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program, called Work First but no statistics were offered on the number of families eligible. The only agency that offers emergency shelter and food assistance is the Ministry Outreach in King. Using my Cultural Assessment tool, I found that the breakdown of the population by age is as follows; Children ages zero to five makes up 5.1%, young people under the age of 18 makes up 21.5%, and adults 65 years of age or older makes up 16.6% of the population. The attitudes toward...

A. Identification of Community/Windshield Survey This paper focuses on the health status of the Yakima Valley in Washington state. Yakima Valley is located in Washington state 150 miles southeast of Seattle. Yakima is the largest city in the county. The 2010 census places the city as the ninth largest city in Washington. The city's total population is 91000 and with a metropolitan population of 243,231. The Yakima county is divided into upper and lower valleys. The city of Yakima is in the upper valley which is more urbanized. The lower valley is less populated and has more agriculture. Yakima Valley is an agricultural community noted for wine, apple and hop production. This area produces 77% of all the hops grown in the United States. ( Yakima County, 2012) The Yakima River is the primary water source for irrigation. The river runs from its source at Lake Keechelus to the Columbia River. Yakima Valley has a steppe or semi-arid climate. Because of the semi-arid climate, vegetation is dominated by grasses or shrubs. Precipitations are low year round with only...

...OF COMMUNITY HEALTH & POPULATION-FOCUSED NURSING VWT Task 2 Middle Eastern Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) Kelly Belcher 307442 Western Governors University ("INSTITUTO DE BIOLOGIA & INGENIERIA DE ECOSISTEMAS: RUSSIAN REPORT WARNS OF GRAVE MONSANTO THREAT TO WORLD," n.d.) I chose to do this assignment about the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS). It is caused by the coronavirus MERS-CoV. I have never heard of this condition, and arbitrarily picked it because my best friend’s last name is Corona. I was interested to learn that, ironically, the only known case in the US was in Indiana, where I live. “Coronaviruses are common viruses that most people get some time in their life. Human coronaviruses usually cause mild to moderate upper-respiratory tract illnesses” ("CDC - Coronavirus - About," n.d.), but >30% of people who have MERS will die from it ("CDC - Coronavirus - Middle East Respiratory Syndrome - MERS-CoV," n.d.). MERS was originally diagnosed in Saudi Arabia in 2012. It is a virus that attacks the respiratory tract. Typically the people who test positive for the virus show the same symptoms. They have a fever, cough, and shortness of breath and may also have pneumonia, sore throat, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. To discuss the epidemiological determinants of this disease I first needed to establish a working definition. “A determinant is any factor or variable that can affect the frequency with which a disease occurs in a population” ("2...

...Explain the difference between a regulatory agency and a professional nursing organization as it pertains to your professional nursing practice. A regulatory agency would best be described using the example of the State Board of Nursing, which regulates the standards of nursing practice by providing policies or laws to ensure safe practice within a scope. The State Board of Nursing provides and enforces these policies to protect society from unsafe practice and unqualified practitioners. It is this agency that qualifies a nurse to sit for the state board examination which entitles a nurse to practice in his or her state. This regulatory agency also has the authority to discipline nurses who violate the standard of practice and even revoke the license. A professional nursing organization such as the ANA or American Nurses Association is a voluntary joined organization that provides nurses with information regarding current nursing policies and continuing education opportunities. This organization promotes unity in nursing and strives to keep nurses informed of changing standards of practice in the field. As a member of the ANA, I feel that I am more educated and prepared for the future of nursing. The state board of nursing issued my license over twenty years ago and is the regulatory agency that qualifies me to practice. I am monitored and expected to abide by the laws of the state board of nursing in order to practice as a registered nurse. I am also required to provide...

The community that I have chosen for the assigned community assessment is Broomfield county in the state of Colorado. This particular county is fairly new in its inception. According to the city and county of Broomfield website’s constitutional amendment section (n.d.), the city of Broomfield became the city and county of Broomfield on November 15, 2001. Before then, the city of Broomfield was in four different counties namely Adams, Boulder, Jefferson and Weld counties. Geographically, Broomfield is located about 17 miles north of the city of Denver and about 14 miles east of Boulder. There are no hospitals in the county due to its small land area, but multiple hospitals are close by within 10-15-minute drive anywhere in Broomfield. B. Using the population economic status assessment tool and using data from the US census bureau (2016), the population of Broomfield county on 2014 was 62,138. Population-wise, Caucasians make up about 78%, Hispanics 12%, Asians 6.3%. African-Americans 1.4%, and the rest below 1%. The median household income from 2010-2014 was $80,430; 6.3% of Broomfield residents were at or below the poverty line (United States Census Bureau, 2016). Broomfield's unemployment rate was at 3% far below the national average of 5.0% in the year 2015 (Economic Research Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, 2015). There are no homeless ...

...The History of Community Nursing Community Health Nursing, originally called "Public Health Nursing" from 1900-1970, combines nursing science with public health science to formulate a community-based and population-focused practice, according to Judith Allender and Barbara Spradley in "Community Health Nursing." The overall goal is to improve the health of communities and vulnerable populations. The name "Community Health Nursing" was adopted in 1970, although "Public Health Nursing" was not abandoned, to better describe the place where the nurse practices. The Beginnings * According to Mary Nies and Melanie McEwen in "Community/Public Health Nursing," modern Community Health Nursing can trace its history to London, England and New York City. In 1854-1856, London health care institutions developed "District Nursing." This referred to the community being divided into districts, each served by a nurse and social worker. In 1893, Florence Nightingale developed the idea of "Home Nursing." This idea charged the District Nurse with being a health educator as well as a nurse to the sick at home. In 1877, in New York City, the Women's Board of New York City Mission sent Francis Root into the homes of the sick. Visiting Nurse Associations emerged in Buffalo in 1885 and in Boston and Philadelphia in 1886. However, in 1893 Lillian Ward established...

...Public Health Comparison Paper Michele Zager, RN Nur/408 November 4th, 2013 Felita J. Patterson 2 Public Health Comparison Paper Public health is defined as “an organized activity of society to promote, protect, improve, and when necessary, restore the health of inficiduals, specified groups, or the enite population” (Scutchfield & Keck, 2009, p. 3). Public health has helped millions of people in the United States achieve the higest level of health possible. Through the efforts of county, state and national public health systems, community nursing and public health nursing have been able to effectively utilize resourses available to ensure the health of communities and the individuals living in those communities. In the United States, Public Health sprouted out of the needs of society to reduce poverty linked diseased, immigrats and industraial linked health problems (Buhler-Wilkerson, 1985). At the beginning of the 20th century, visiting nurses were already engaged in a campaign of teaching healthy habits to individuals. Soon, the realization “that individual helth depended to some extent on the health of the population generally, the hazareds of infectious diseases become an increasingly tangible concern” (Buhler-Wilderson, 1985, p.1155). The population began to view public health as a concern for everyone. One of the early pioneres in public health nursing was Florence Nightengale. She saw the difference between sick nursing and health nursing. She...

...Public Health Comparison Paper University Of Phoenix NUR/408 1 July 2012 Abstract This paper will provide information on county, state, and national public health resources and will describe the history of public health with related dates of pertinence. The differences between public and community health will also be discussed including influential individuals and significant historical events that have shaped the agencies and policies by which public health is directed. For purposes of comparison the public health departments relating specifically to disease prevention and control will be highlighted on a county, state and national level. Definitions The main objectives of public health resources “are the political and practical application of lessons learned from past successes and failures in disease control and the promotion of preventive measures to combat existing, evolving and re-emerging health threats and risks. Public health professionals address present and anticipated health problems in a complex world with great inequalities with specific targets which would help to achieve higher standards of health and a more just and socially responsible distribution of resources” (Tulchinsky & Varavikova, 2010). Public health encompasses a broad scope of health issues including the mental, physical, emotional, social, spiritual, and environmental aspects of health. Public health professionals are trained to occupy multiple roles within a complex framework. Public...

...Within The Neighborhood Community settings the nurses portray both community and public health nursing roles. Public health nursing is a "population focused practice, emphasizing promotion of health, prevention of disease and disability, and the creation of conditions in which all people can be healthy" (p. 10), according to Stanhope and Lancaster (2008). Community health nursing is different in that the focus is the maintenance of the health of a population through the delivery of health services to individuals, families, and groups (Stanhope & Lancaster, 2008). Carol Ramsey functions within her community as a nurse midwife. I perceive her to be a community health nurse as she functions to provide support to women in her community concerning prenatal and postnatal care. She also provides education regarding contraception and STD’s to women in her community. She also has another role working in her community health department so she provides nursing care as a public health nurse as she has opportunity to work with a variety of patients in the clinic setting. Working in the health department allows her to serve the public and community as she treats and cares for patients with many different kinds of illness. Violet Brinkworth is involved in her community as a school health nurse. I see her focus as a public health nurse as her primary function is health promotion and education in a specific aged population. While she does work with the public, she has a limited role...

...Comparison Paper Public health was defined as, what we, as a society, do collectively to assure the conditions in which people can be healthy and the mission of public health was to generate organized community effort to address the public interest in health by applying scientific and technical knowledge to prevent disease and promote health (Stanhope & Lancastor, 2008). Public Health is on a national, state, and county scale dealing in research, data analysis, and recommendation for health promotion. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and census are examples of public health. .). Examples of community-based health care are the local health department giving the H1N1 flu vaccination to all citizens free of charge. These community-based healthcare systems are giving the vaccinations based on research by the CDC and NIH. ...Community Conceptual Model Leonie Taylor-Brown, Kellie Durner, Diane Nims, Jessica O’ Hara NUR/544 August 25, 2014 Amy Weaver FNP Community Conceptual Model Milio's framework for prevention was created as a complement to health belief model (HBM). HBM is based on individuals avoiding disease, but has limitations, such as placing the burden of action on the patient (Nies and McEwen, 2011). While Milio recognized these limitations, she continued the development of her framework for prevention. She focused on opportunities for nurses to make changes at the population level. Milio also noted that health care deficits resulted in an imbalance between health needs and health resources, and therefore believed that health promoting resources should be readily available and at a low cost. No matter what a person’s background is, they will choose options that are the simplest and less resistant. If the simplest means were choosing health-damaging options, individuals will present increased risk for poor health. It is up to the policies created by the government, federal or local, and organization to provide the education and resources for individuals. Based on Milios framework of prevention, these resources should be cost efficient and easily learned. According to Milio (1976) "The range of options available to them, and the ease with which they may choose certain ones over others is typically set by organizations public and private, formal and informal" (p...

...Dennis October 11, 2010 Introduction The demand for public health nursing and community health nursing is currently on the rise. However many people do not know how to utilize the abundant amount of information and knowledge available throughout this nursing specialty. There are some people that don’t know that it exists, or they are unaware of the services that PHN provides. This paper focuses on the history of public health nursing, local public health information, the differences between public health nursing and community health nursing. As a result, the author wants the reader to be able to differentiate between the two nursing specialties. Local public health information The Memphis/Shelby County Health Department is the ideal place to find public health information in Memphis, TN. It is there that one can find information on current health facts i.e., H1N1 (symptoms and side effects) west nile virus and other illnesses, public announcements, updates, recalls, general wellness checkups, health concerns and vaccinations (for children and adults). The Memphis/Shelby County Health Department is the best place to encounter the workings of the public health nurse. In addition to the above information, The Memphis/County Health Department can provide information on encountering disasters, readiness and preparations for those disasters (MSCHD, 2010). History of Public Health Public Health is not just a thing of the past. It is a very important part of our...
