Guiding Questions:
1. Brief description of the community from documents researched. What is the cultural and linguistic representation of the community? If this information is not found on the Internet, from your observations, what culture/language do you think is represented?

Ozone queens is a working class residential community with a lot of commercial real estate that will appeal well to the public. Asian and Hispanic are the cultural and linguistic representation of the community.

2. What are the distinguishing physical features of the school? Surrounding area? What year was the school built? Include a picture of the front of the school in this area of your paper.

The school has an attached playground floor, a one way school zone designated street and a local city playground. -> Front of school

3. Does the school have a playground? What are its distinguishing features (if so, include a photo of it in this section of your survey)?

Yes the school has a playground both in front of the school and behind the school. The playground floor in the back of the school has the planets on the ground, a couple of areas to play hopscotch, and various other games. A community garden also exists in the back. There are boxed off areas where the remains of old plants put there by students can be seen. The Ampere Playground in front of the school is gated and kept clean by park staff.

4. Describe the surrounding housing, street, sanitary conditions.

There are multi-dwellings and private houses, the streets are well kept and there is a high level of maintenance displayed in the Ozone community. The streets are mostly clean with a few exceptions here and there. It seems like a very quiet neighborhood. 5. What are the closest means of transportation to arrive at the school?

The Q24 bus runs down the main ave. The bus stops are very close by the school. Walk a little bit further and you can find the A train which can take you directly to Manhattan, the airport, and the beach. A few blocks down and you can find the City Line Car service which provides taxi service to everyone in the neighborhood.

6. What are the religious institutions? Does this area have a historical significance?

We heard the Azan coming out of a Mosque near by. We could also hear church bells. This community is definitely religiously active.

Revival Time Assembly - Church

7. What are the civic, social service organizations? Where are they located?

The couple of social service organizations in the area are the Ferrini Welfare League organization located at 10141 91st St, Ozone Park, NY 11416. There is also the American Legion Veterans and Military Organization located at 9111 101st Ave, Ozone Park, NY 11416.

Day care near by

8. What restaurants exist? Do they reflect the diverse makeup of the community? Do they provide healthy food options to the youth?

The restaurants that do exist around the community are Pollo Inka a Peruvian Restaurants, a Mexican Cuisine Restaurant, Ozone Pizzeria and a Chinese Fun 1 Chinese Restaurant. These restaurants do not provide healthy food options for the young they mostly serve deep fried and fatty food. These restaurants reflect on mostly the hispanic part of the community and not as much as the Chinese community. There definitely isn’t a presence of a gentrified neighborhood. There aren’t any vegan shops, no bakeries, no starbucks near by. The shops in the neighborhood are tailored to the needs of the community and are an accurate representation of the community.

9. Are there any distinguishing features in the streets of the community (landmarks, museums, special street names)? What are they?

There are no distinguishing features. In fact this location lacks art. There are no school murals or sculptures. The park is however very clean and well kept. Two repairmen were making repairs to the swing set.

10. What other community resources are present? Do they reflect the diverse makeup of the community? Do you hear other languages spoken or on billboards, placards, store fronts, etc.?

We heard several people speaking bengali and many others speaking spanish. We walked down the main road and found signs written in both Bengali, English, Chinese, and Spanish. There were several bengali grocery stores and ethnic restaurants nearby. Sylhet Pharmacy is a Bengali pharmacy highly populated with both Bengali and Spanish people. The names of the bigger shops in the area reflect this diverse makeup of the community.

Stores & Churches in the Neighborhood * Fultoli Jame Masjid * Ema Supermarket * Ozone Park Supermarket * Sylhet Pharmacy * El Pollo Inka Peru * Revival Time Assembly (Church) * City Line Car Service

11. From the perspective of a new teacher to the school/community, what are your first impressions? What assumptions did you have before your walk? What are your thoughts now after your community walk and research?
As a new teacher to the school and community my first impressions was that it is a nice safe community for the kids and everybody in general who works and lives there. My assumptions before the walk were similar as my impression due to friends and families description of the neighborhood. It’s fascinating how the makeup of the community has changed over the years. As the Italian Americans moved out and the Bengali Americans moved in, the neighborhood shifted to fit their needs.

12. Are there any signs or informative placards in the community? If written in English, what level of English is reflected? Are there any in a different language? Include in this section a picture of 35 samples of signs, ads, placards, etc. that are used in the community and reflect the cultural makeup of the community.

There weren’t many signs in the community. Those we did find showed various languages. The English signs were standard English. The sign outside the Ampere playground was in four languages, English, Chinese, Spanish , and photos. I think this encompasses a very self aware community that tries to incorporate all kinds of people. Sign posted on the wall of the school in English. Sign written in English, Spanish, Chinese.

13. Is there a culture of reading or literacy present in the community? If not, what kind of leisure or entertainment activities are present for youth? (Include photos that demonstrate recreational/educational areas for the youth of the neighborhood).

There is a culture of reading present in this community. They have a family reading night coordinated by the school librarian. They offer all students an opportunity to share an evening of stories and books with teachers, parents, and siblings. Children return to school in bedtime attire and gather with classmates and families in designated locations. Our teachers volunteer their time to tell stories and model effective ways to read aloud. The Queens Public Library (which a few miles away) representatives are available to take library card applications.

14. What are your final reflections from your walk? How does the environment impact the learning experience of the students in this school/neighborhood?

We think that we’d love to work here. The community seems very diverse. It looks like a lot of different cultures are celebrated and welcome. There are many forms of transportation nearby (the bus, the train, and the car service). It feels like a safe neighborhood. The neighborhood expresses that it’s acceptance of the community and the children learn a lot from it. They see a diverse community where their language is accepted and used regularly.

Community Windshield Survey

...5 Practical Methods Direct Observations and Windshield Surveys 50 Practical Methods D irect observations allow one to better understand the environment in which people interact and to see the things some residents may not be aware of, or to better understand a phenomenon. Direct observation may help distill useful information that may not be apparent from your other data collection methods. This type of data collection allows you, the observer, to choose a location, event, or phenomenon and then to directly observe human activities over a period of time. Getting Started Begin by vividly describing the location you are observing. Include details, but try not to get bogged down with clutter. These details may seem superfluous at the time, but future analysis may prove otherwise. You should also describe the people you see and what they are doing. Things to Consider Continually return to the main focus of the observation. Developing an observation form may help. A sample observation form can be found on pages 53–55. The form will help guide your observation and help you focus on specific items. You will need to determine the most appropriate sites and gear the timing of your observation toward the phenomena in question. For example, if you observe a site too early in the morning, you may miss social interactions later in the evening that shed light on your community. You may want to observe different sites at various times to make the best...

Windshield Survey Reflection

...Running Head: Windshield Survey Summary and Reflection Windshield Survey Summary and Reflection Leonard Larino University of Phoenix – Professor Bonnie Schoettle April 27, 2015 Windshield Survey Summary and Reflection Public health nursing involves a community and the overall health of the community. A community is a group within an area or region. These groups vary through various areas. According to Stanhope & Lancaster, they cited the World Health Organization’s definition of community as a group of people in a defined geographical area that share a common culture, values and norms, and are arranged in a social structure based on the community’s development over time. (Stanhope & Lancaster, p. 397, 2012). There are three factors in community: people, place and function. (Stanhope & Lancaster, p. 397, 2012). These three factors are what we as potential community health/public health nurses examine to develop a plan of care for the community. As community health nurses, the community is the client, with the focus being the collective and common good of the population; the individual patients we care for are now expanded into a whole populations benefit. (Stanhope & Lancaster, p. 398, 2012). Community health is collective needs being met and is done by identifying problems and managing behaviors in the community. (Stanhope & Lancaster, p. 401, 2012). Improving health can be achieved through community partnerships. This can be done by partnering...

...journalist. 2. Why does crowd sourcing require a large, "undefined community" to work? Why not a small, defined community of passionate people who you know and have worked with before or with whom you are already friends (think Face book communities which are smaller, and defined)? Crowd sourcing require a large undefined community because it is said to be more accurate and concise. Large aggregates produce better estimates and judgments than smaller groups. Decisions come from diverse backgrounds. Wisdom of the crowd is another type of crowdsourcing that collects large amounts of information and aggregates it to gain a complete and accurate picture of a topic, based on the idea that a group of people is often more intelligent than an individual. This idea of collective intelligence proves particularly effective on the web because people can contribute in real-time within the same forums from very diverse backgrounds 3. Can you think of other examples of crowd sourcing besides photography? Is photography a good example? What kinds of products or services might not lend themselves to crowd sourcing? Mobs, herds and runaway stock markets produce bad decisions from crowdsourcing. 4. What is the impact of crowd sourcing on business? Can a "crowd sourced" business be profitable? Windshield Survey

...Windshield Survey Summary and Reflection I have lived in the neighborhood of Fruitridge Manor in Sacramento for the past three years. Being able to enjoy the proximity to downtown and Tahoe Park has been a perk, because the housing in this area is affordable. When I decided to interview one of my neighbors for this project, I came to the realization that I have not taken the time to enjoy what we have around us. By conducting this windshield survey, I was able to understand why most of the neighbors that live in this area have stayed through the years. Some of the areas that would be covered in this document are the family’s community and their environment, as well as the diversity in community. I will also be defining the following terms; community, community health, community as client, and partnerships. Family’s Community and Environment A community can be defined as the interaction of individuals in a social network, usually focused in a defined territory according to our textbook (Stanhope & Lancaster, 2014, p.190). When interviewing the Doe’s family, it was evident the closeness of their community. Mr. Doe was able to point out each neighbor in the street he lives on and how long they have been living in the community. The pride of ownership is apparent by how the streets are free of clutter, trash and the maintenance of a their front yards. Although the neighborhood has changed through the years, the most visible changed one can see is the aging of members...

...Community Assessment and Analysis of Tucson Estates Lizi Thomas, Sophyamma Roy, Lena Fincher, Julie Overland, & Camilla Okolo Grand Canyon University: NRS-427V September 30, 2012 Julie’s Intro The demographic boundaries of Tucson Estates are within the Tucson Mountain Park; mountains comprising of accessible hiking trails, and wildlife in which the retirees leave out food and water surround the community. Small areas of open desert are on either side of the retirement community. Adjacent to the retirement community are newer housing developments with retired residents, but is not a designated retirement community. This is both a geopolitical and phenomenological community. The geopolitical factors in the community are human made legal boundaries and retired people 55 years and older. “Geopolitical communities are formed by either natural or human-made boundaries. Human-made boundaries may be structural, political, or legal” (Smith, 2009, p. 400). This is also a phenomenological community because there are shared values within the group. “A sense of place emerges through the members' awareness of their experiences together. People in a phenomenological community have a group perspective that differentiates them from other groups” (Smith, 2009, p. 400). The people who live in this community share the same generation values, and have activities that caters to their age bracket. Additionally, they are all bound by the common goals of keeping their community safe and clean...
