In the novel, My Name is Asher Lev, Asher Lev was a Hasidic Jew that had the love of painting, But towards his dreams of being a painter there were problems that were holding him back. His father was one of them. His father wanted him to be more interested in reading the Thora than spending time from something that was known to them as “the other side”. To compare, and contrast between Asher Lev, and Amadeus Mozart. Mozart was a composer of the classical era. Mozart, and Lev were both fascinated in arts. In Chapter 7 of the book, the Rebbe made Jacob help Asher by being his teacher. The Rebbe was an intelligent man who thought doing that would help Asher realize his religion and view them differently as he does now. Then, Asher became known to the world as Jacob Khan, and Anna Schaeffer made him into a famous artist. His father didn't attend any of his shows because of the paintings he made. His parents both were unhappy because he painted naked women. In Chapter 12, Page 304 Asher tells his father “I'm part of a tradition. Papa. Mastery of the nude is very important.” His father attempted to come close to Asher but it didn't succeed because Asher cared most about his painting. Asher didn't care about what his parents did. Religion wasn't a big deal for him. He just wanted to paint even if that meant he would make other people have mixed emotions about it, even his parents emotions didn't make him change. When he painted the “Brooklyn Crucifixions” he distant himself from his parents, and religion. His parents felt disturbed about it, but Asher didn't care.
